Here's what Hawaii needs and Larry Ellison is uniquely qualified to provide: a world-class marina/yachting center.

Come on Larry! You can do it!

The thread title is a little misleading. He's only buying 98% of the island.

Manele Bay is a pretty small harbor without obvious expansion potential given the fragile reef there. Maybe a harbor can be created on the south side. It is the best place to sail here given the options of windy, calmer, wavy, and flat water -ish right there. Also that 4 island group has the most cruising potential. But the infrastructure is limmited, as is the water supply, the landscape is fragile, and everythng has to be shipped to Honolulu then barged to Lanai or flown into a small airport without direct flights to the mainland. Having said all that it is potentially a great place to train for SF bay sailing with generally steady strong trades and warm water. Murdock was planning on turning much of the island into a wind farm with undersea cables to elsewhere, but that model seems like it is going nowhere. Theynhave built a bunch of fancy houses for visitors, there is more development potential, but ag wise kinda limited, pineapple has been tough on the soil and water table and can be grown cheaper elsewhere. Interesting. Beautiful place, quiet.

Bruno, you maybe forgot how much money Ellison has.

Yes, Manele Bay is too small to create a world-class marina. It would need to be expanded greatly via the addition of a large breakwater or a completely new harbor would need to be built from scratch. Nothing that an unlimited supply of high explosives can't solve.

The only obstacle I see is environmental/legal.

Is it just me, but doesn't it seem like Ellison is turning into a Dr. Evil type Bond villain more and more everyday? I mean now he has the private island. He already has the cool mega-yacht with all the exotic toys and secret rooms. And doesn't he sponsor some kind of anti-aging research institute?

I don't get this at all.

I hear there's a Hotel at Manele bay now. When I lived on Oahu, my friends and I would sail to Lanai where we would gorge on lobster, snorkel brilliant reefs, and swim with the dolphins. I guess those times are past. It seems more and more the Islands are a vanishing paradise.

Having actually BEEN to that tiny harbor on the side of sheer cliff, I have to wonder WHERE you would expand it - ever beenin there with a swell running ? Gnarly. When the barge-crews can handle the surge, you KNOW it's bad.

Best bet would be a man-made breakwater/marina on the Maui side. Not likely though.

That's my take on it.

People take cell-phone pictures of each other doing stuff that it less interesting by several orders of magnitude and post it all up online -- Fizzlebook, Pizzlinterest, Twizzleter...

Agreed, S swell surge and kona systems would be problematic but I don't think permission would be forthcoming today to fill on top of some of the best reef in the state outside Manele. Limited number of slots available, not going to build it in front the beach, much of the reef is fragile kine. But maybe there is another spot which is feasible. They are going to build more anti-surge breakwalls at Kewalos, I hear, maybe so the Devos yachts can visit the Obama library.

A vacation spot would be a fitting place to put the Obama library...

Obama Library will likely be in Chicago. Or Kenya....

Regarding Lanai, can't see L.E. trying to do the 'massive development' thing with anything nearly as high visibility as a marina - and the Manele (south) side would be very bad - most easily developed side would be the east side, the one facing Maui, but the trip there from 'topside' Lanai is a bit grueling.

No, Larry will probably just continue with the existing hotel operations and make them a bit MORE exclusive, while he builds his secret headquarters at an undisclosed location. Perhaps he'll seceed and form his own country ?

Kind of amazing the lengths some people will go to just to be happy. But I applaud him. I'd be happy with two weeks and 100' of Lanai waterfront. Ok, 150'. But "happy" is very hard to buy.

I'm just a little surprised he didn't go for a 'package deal' and take Molokai off the State's hands while he was at it.

BP - you ever get fed up with the cold, you KNOW you always have a (modest) place to call home for a week or 2 on Oahu, in the thriving metropolis of Ka'a'awa - last house on a dead end road that's not paved. Real quiet except for when my Samoan neighbors gather in thier carport for a day-long meal and sing the praises of the Lord. Don't worry - they can carry a tune. It is a fine, joyous noise. I'll even let you borrow the Megabyte.
