I went out to clean off a few spots on our boat this morning and thought I would try one of the Magic Erasers. We use them in the house and they work really great. Well they were awesome on the boat. The manufactured gel coat non skid looks factory new. Then I tried it on our Hobie Wave and it seemed to work even better on the roto-molded plastic. Cleaned it really weel, even the stains that appeared to be in the surface not on. Those things even put a shine on the plastic. These things worked so well I am worried, anybody use them? Any long term issues? I have tried to find out what is in them that makes them so effective but so far haven't gotten an answer. I am worried they might mar the finish on the gel coat or degrade the plastic.

Zero - We use them with similar great results. No downsides yet. You didn't look very hard to find out what is "in them". This is the first Google response to: "what is in magic eraser"

I've used them a few times to clean out bad stuff in non-skid. They don't last long on serious non-skid but do an amazing job! I know someone around here even managed to get an entire crate-worth of them, needless to say our boats were all spot-less for a while...

well I saw the Snopes articles and got through a bunch of Google search articles. I just didn't word that properly. I guess I was concerned they would scratch the gel coat given what they are made of. I am glad to hear they are working well for you. They are so much faster and more effective than anything else I have used.

I used to use them on my pumpout boat (back when I was in that business.) If they can clean that, they can clean anything.

I have used them to remove various black marks/dock scuffs and they work well. Seem good for non skid as well. However, they might strip wax/polish from your hull so for general boat washing I stick to good old fashioned boat soap and water.

A boat cleaning professional recommended them for some stubborn stains on the non-skid and it worked great.

They are "magic" erasers. I use them all the time on MC Scows to take pond scum or trailers streaks off. No soap needed!
