The new J/V 72 Stig arrives in Valencia

Should be interesting, her first outing looks like Copa del Rey, her 'sistership' Bella Mente will also be there. Both boats are developments of Ran.

Someone involved in the programme was posting in the Bella Mente thread, but I can't find the posts anymore. They've moved up from a Baltic 65 C/R, game or no game, he's got $$$'s...sorry, €€€'s!

Interesting to see the differing thoughts on deck layouts:

Bella
Posted Image

Stig
Posted Image

Bella has both pit winches on the Stbd side and the pedestals are mounted 1 fwd, 1 mid, 2 aft. Whereas Stig is more conventional with Port and Stbd pit winches, 2 pedestals fwd, 1 mid and 1 aft.

Inshore/offshore bias? + maybe lighter wind med (with crew forward), vs a heavier wind emphasis (primary grinders aft).

I'd certainly say the pedestals aft and so far split would be to concentrate weight up and out when stacked aft for off the wind, as you say maybe an offshore/inshore focus of reach of the boats.

Notocing a bit more volume belowdecks on Bella under the cockpit than Stig both in terms of cockpit depth and the overhangs aft. Room for pipe berths offshore?

Not sure your correct about pit winches. Need to see clearer picture, thinking starboard set up is very much standard now days.

Probably linked into a couple of winches, but most likely use is for the runners/backstays. Very much doubt they would be top handling them.

Can't believe on a boat this size you wouldn't link all the pedestals. Minimal weight penalty for maximum benefit.

Would have though they'd have flipped it over for the sanding and painting, plus the internal hull/deck join.

Just an idea

You can't flip the boat if you are required to install hydraulic and electrical systems as well as structure at the same time...

Boat should be afloat by midweek is my understanding and I hope Mr Pierre/VSAIL is able to give us a couple of photos with the appendages installed and rig in: boat is currently at Victory Challenge Yard.

Unikely to be doing that while still joining hull and deck and bulkheads to deck, all operations are faster with it flipped, but each to their own.

Unlikely under normal circumstances but the timetable for this boat was a little compressed to say the least. Tooling started in November, entire boat constructed in 7 months with around 1 week spare between ready to sail for the first time and first race start... And its not an easy boat from the structures and systems point of view... Impressive combination of the various suppliers getting everything sorted in the time span available.

Fair enough, didn't realise it was such a compressed build schedule.

Ummm.... I was under the impression that the "proper" size was a flag that just kissed the water when at rest. Sort of like Stig's ensign. ;)

AIUI, that's the sizing the Dutch and Danish use. And just kissed is exactly that - a few mm immersed. Standard UK ensign sizing recommendation is 1" of fly per 1' LOA.

I'm wondering why she wears the red duster anyway, what with the owner being Italian (and seemingly not based in based in Italy). I'm guessing tax, but have no idea about machinations.

Obviously not a huge fan of it, but black cockpit does not really make much of difference. Completely black decks, cockpit, and topsides (like on Jethou - even the crew uniforms were black!) are a different story...

Not so much that they will not let you know, but you really, really do not want to go barefoot on the kind of non-skid used. Sandpaper has got nothing on this shit - and it gets replaced regularly.

Only delivery crew and BNs might go barefoot on this. Sailors while racing, no way.

Having seen the boats in Palma: new Bella Mente (J/V 72) has an in-line 3 spreader rig from Hall USA.

new Stig (J/V 72) has a swept 3 spreader rig from Hall Holland. Vang on Stig is a strop only and from what I heard on the dock, some of the crew have got to get used to that so up until raceday 1 they will sail with a MH Spin halyard attached. You can see the lock bullet if you look properly in the photos.

The real interesting thing will be to see how Ran (J/V 72) lines up against the others next week. Dialled in versus latest and greatest but untested...

And your sailnumber is based on the country of the boat/owner for national sailing authority versus homeport (on the back and the flag that goes with it: in this case a red ensign) which is taxes and regulations for when the boat is not racing. I'm guessing the company that pays the sailors and the bills is registered in the UK but wholly owned by the Italian mr Stig: Rombelli.

Grip-taped the ramp on the back. Perfect.

Nothing worse than a slippery bathroom floor.

Here's a set of photos from Thursday's races. In the 6-10 knot breeze it seemed to be faster than RAN and Bellamente: http://www.facebook....25846100&type=1

A word from the bow of Bella Mente:

Light air was the motto of the day. Our first race was sailed in 7-9 knots. We had an average start in the middle of the line but a little too far back.
We worked the left side of the course but ended up getting rolled to windward by Stig on the port layline. After that, we had to sail in their gas all the way to the top mark. Painful. We had a decent set and seemed to go average on the run. We struggled to gain any positions for the rest of the race.
The second race we got a nice start at the pin. We worked our way to the left again but found ourselves getting rolled by Stig on the port layline. Same movie… Again, we struggled to gain any positions for the rest of the race. On the upside, our boat handling was more crisp and we cleaned a few things up. Our light air sets have made an improvement, although we still feel that there are some more gains to be had there. We definitely struggled for speed all day in the light air. Our boat is moded for a bit more breeze and it showed today. So now our challenge is to squeeze some better performance out of the boat in the light.
2 more races tomorrow.

Last I checked/cared/heard Bella had the Hobart on their schedule. No idea if that's changed or not.
