Many years ago, spoke to a guy that wanted his YW Diamond to be called Cunning Stunts, but his club disallowed it.
'bout the same time, a boat called Wallaby Bob was affectionately dubbed "Swallow Me Knob" by our crew.
In more recent times a Farr was called King Beauty.

Dentist in town named his "Painless."
Saw a massive sea ray tied up to a wharf on Marthas Vineyard once named "Open Wide".
The name had a tooth next to it.
I like it when the name of a tender/dinghy carries on a theme from the big boat. One of my favorites: the cruiser was "Big cookie." Dinghy was "Little Crumb."

Just a clarification::
I started this thread to bitch about boat names that have dredged up memories of really bad yet catchy tunes that subsequent to seeing those names left me with a totally obnoxious leftover.
Boat names actually do tell us things about the owners of those boats.
I have no problem with those who wish to place a sign on the side of a boat which warns me of that craft's association with someone with whom I would likely prefer not to associate.
My own boat does not leave you singing a hard to forget awful tune but it does probably tell people I am somewhat of an asshole who happens to be old and thinks he can still race.>>

this is diving deep into bond-geekdom but I still get a chuckle.
John Devaney was a big ABS guy who had one of his subprime hedge funds meltdown in 2007. When he was forced to sell his mega yacht, it hit the headlines that it was named 'Positive Carry'.
Positive carry, negative convexity trades push the risk out to the tails. Generally, if the trend holds you make money and if things change, you can be massively, royally screwed. If you are arrogant enough to name your yacht positive carry, then at some point you are going to blow up and have to sell it

No, Betty was Jimmy's former girlfriend - you had to know Jimmy - he was a wonderful sailor with a great sense of humor - killed on his way home from wet wed racing by a drunk driver - Aliens, his prior boat was an Olson 30

I wish you could've given your advice to the owners of the boat I recently saw named YOLO.The two that came to my mind have already been mentioned, Carpe Diem and Hakuna Matata got seriously overdone. When we name a boat, we try to pick something at least a little original, but not a current fad and we sleep on it for at least a few days before finalizing our choice. No regrets on the four boats we've named so far...

Not a song reference... the old SanJuan 26 was "Inevitable" , our Pearson Flyer is "Inexorable" (we start last in the Saturday beercan pursuit races). My son decided his Force 5 we are resurrecting is "Inconceivable" I love that kid. My daughter's Harpoon 4.6.... $200 dollar, damn near dumpster find, was named by PO as "Ocean Waif".... I do think of a song every time I look at it.... its the irony.... such a well behaved and fun li'l boat....and looks like an old roadhouse whore.... Daughter want's it renamed... something dramatic...
Those negative, verb-based, adjectives or whatever they are: insatiable, indomitable, inevitable, irrepressible, have gotten way out of hand. Inconceivable is good and to it I'd add: indigestible, irreparable, and intestinal.

Our Pearson Flyer was named "Pandemonium." Thought that the next boat should be named "Chaos," because after pandemonium comes chaos. Never did follow through on that.
Current thinking is to name the next ride (if there is one and depending on what it is) "Cheap Sunglasses." Got that damn ZZ Top song in my head and it wont go away. Graphics could be quite interesting.

i had a dinghy once and gave it it's sail number as it's name - just to see the confusion at regatta tables 'hey you've filled in the form wrong'...'no i haven't' etcLocal sailor raced a San Juan 30 and never named it. So when he would check in he always got asked "what's the name of the boat" which got the reply "it ain't got no facking name". Eventually the people at the registration table would enter NFN. In polite company it got called "No Formal Name" but he preferred being called by it's street name.

You're right, that and the 'cat' based-named catamarans. G.Zeus, people, it ain't fuckin' witty, ok? I do like 'Cynophobe,' though
Ditto on the J/Boats with "J" names. There's no need to advertise that you are so far out of ideas you have to name your J/24 "J-Bird" or some such inanity.
Ditto for Schock-35s. Schock Therapy? Aftershock? Feh.
I hope jaybird1111 I quoted above doesn't have a J-boat of the same name. That would be awkward!
I'll revise and extend my remarks to say that any time someone incorporates the name of the boat's manufacturer, designer, or design name into the name of the boat itself, I cringe.

There are a whole lot of Trimarans out there with cringe worthy 'tri' based names.

Boat names actually do tell us things about the owners of those boats.
I wonder what "Shark Infested Custard" says about me....
Best boat name ever is "Your Mother". Ask your friends to come wax her bottom...

Always thought a good name for a Schock 40 would be 'The Shocker'.......

Add to that all the multi-hulls with "kitty" names.

Then there was the Farr 37 jointly owned by a visually impaired [blind] sailor and a psychiatrist. Naturally it was called "Out Of Sight Out of Mind".
Finally the Aus Laser Class had to clamp down on excessively long names when some genius called one " A Pizza Without Cheese Is Like A Woman Without Knees". Buggered if I know how they got that on the transom.

Inconceivable is good and to it I'd add: indigestible, irreparable, and intestinal.

i had a dinghy once and gave it it's sail number as it's name - just to see the confusion at regatta tables 'hey you've filled in the form wrong'...'no i haven't' etc
Local sailor raced a San Juan 30 and never named it. So when he would check in he always got asked "what's the name of the boat" which got the reply "it ain't got no facking name". Eventually the people at the registration table would enter NFN. In polite company it got called "No Formal Name" but he preferred being called by it's street name.
