Boatspeed 23 " the Rooting King " rejected for registration by the Royal Prince Alfred YC so the story goes

Rumour has it that the boat now known as the acronym BOOTS was originally named Cunning Stunts but changed By Order Of the Secretary.

Many years ago, spoke to a guy that wanted his YW Diamond to be called Cunning Stunts, but his club disallowed it.

'bout the same time, a boat called Wallaby Bob was affectionately dubbed "Swallow Me Knob" by our crew.

In more recent times a Farr was called King Beauty.

Saw a massive sea ray tied up to a wharf on Marthas Vineyard once named "Open Wide".

The name had a tooth next to it.

Dentist in town named his "Painless."

I like it when the name of a tender/dinghy carries on a theme from the big boat. One of my favorites: the cruiser was "Big cookie." Dinghy was "Little Crumb."

Just a clarification::

I started this thread to bitch about boat names that have dredged up memories of really bad yet catchy tunes that subsequent to seeing those names left me with a totally obnoxious leftover.

Boat names actually do tell us things about the owners of those boats.

I have no problem with those who wish to place a sign on the side of a boat which warns me of that craft's association with someone with whom I would likely prefer not to associate.

My own boat does not leave you singing a hard to forget awful tune but it does probably tell people I am somewhat of an asshole who happens to be old and thinks he can still race.>>

Special thanks to a seat belt company in Germany that manufactures harnesses used by the likes of Nascar, Formula One and Air forces all over the planet

In Channel Islands harbor we had Aliens ate my Buick and Earth Girls are Easy. The former owner of Aliens named his next boat after his former girlfriend, Psycho Betty.

Huh!

I always thought that was a somewhat insensitive dig at the matriarch of the Schock family, being the name of a Schock 35 and all.

this is diving deep into bond-geekdom but I still get a chuckle.

John Devaney was a big ABS guy who had one of his subprime hedge funds meltdown in 2007. When he was forced to sell his mega yacht, it hit the headlines that it was named 'Positive Carry'.

Positive carry, negative convexity trades push the risk out to the tails. Generally, if the trend holds you make money and if things change, you can be massively, royally screwed. If you are arrogant enough to name your yacht positive carry, then at some point you are going to blow up and have to sell it

No, Betty was Jimmy's former girlfriend - you had to know Jimmy - he was a wonderful sailor with a great sense of humor - killed on his way home from wet wed racing by a drunk driver - Aliens, his prior boat was an Olson 30

If my next boat has the ability to surf, I am planning on naming it "Surfeit"

The word itself means something along the lines of "wretched excess", but it is pronounced like "Surf It"

Many will no doubt disagree, but as double meaning names go, I thought this wasn't bad

In Marina del Rey, years ago there was an Islander 37 named Superstar. Not too funny unless you know the history. The Islander dealers in MDR decided to transpac with the islander 37, name unknown. Halfway across, they called the Coast Guard. They had shredded all their sails and their engine was not working because it was underwater. There was so much water coming in the hull/deck joint they thought they might be sinking. U S navy dropped them a pump. Then they sent a Nuclear Submarine that towed the Islander 37 for 2 days toward Hawaii. The Navy decided they had other things to do with their sub so they persuaded the insurance company to send out a commercial tow. My late friend Sid found the boat in pieces in an LA junkyard. He put it back together. Now for the hard part - the name. The Rock Opera, Jesus Christ Superstar had just come out. Sid did not let the fact that he was Jewish get in the way of a great name.

Yachts of Fun and A Yacht of Fun are also names of boats I've worked on.. Its always interesting to see the names of boats that come into the boat yards

Not a particularly bad song, but it did tend to get stuck in my head every time I saw a J24 called "Planet Claire" (this was about 30 years ago).

How about bad movies? The Viper 640 fleet is known for snake-themed names... I'm surprised we haven't seen "on a plane" or "I've had about enough" yet.

No, Betty was Jimmy's former girlfriend - you had to know Jimmy - he was a wonderful sailor with a great sense of humor - killed on his way home from wet wed racing by a drunk driver - Aliens, his prior boat was an Olson 30

Local sailor raced a San Juan 30 and never named it. So when he would check in he always got asked "what's the name of the boat" which got the reply "it ain't got no facking name". Eventually the people at the registration table would enter NFN. In polite company it got called "No Formal Name" but he preferred being called by it's street name.

Cheers, Win ever.

The two that came to my mind have already been mentioned, Carpe Diem and Hakuna Matata got seriously overdone. When we name a boat, we try to pick something at least a little original, but not a current fad and we sleep on it for at least a few days before finalizing our choice. No regrets on the four boats we've named so far...

Our Pearson Flyer was named "Pandemonium." Thought that the next boat should be named "Chaos," because after pandemonium comes chaos. Never did follow through on that.

Current thinking is to name the next ride (if there is one and depending on what it is) "Cheap Sunglasses." Got that damn ZZ Top song in my head and it wont go away. Graphics could be quite interesting.

My older son named his Laser "Homicidal Psycho Jungle Cat." He was a big fan of the comic strip Calvin and Hobbes.

Speaking of overused names--how about "Osprey" and "Cygnet"

There was a Mosquito cat in Aus Called "Dicken Cider" .... apparently the owner managed to convince a few race committees he was sponsored by a brewery.

There are a whole lot of Trimarans out there with cringe worthy 'tri' based names. I always though 'Billy Goats Gruff' would be good trimaran name.

John Kolius once had/sailed a J24 called Cheap Sunglasses with cool graphics. It had mirror lenses on either side of the transom and the arms went up the side of the boat. Anyone got pics of that one?

This classic was advertised for sale in Western Australia a while back. Lots of family appeal in that name?

Saw a Laser named "stud muffin"

One of the first Lasers ever seen in Australia was famously called "Magnolia Thunderpussy"

Not one of the first but the first boats that Rob Mundle called his own. His brother Bruce had 'Oigle Shollop'. Didn'y mean anything, just liked the sound of the name.

Didn't Mark Phillips have a Laser named "Freddy FudPucker" during your time at the Alfred's?

The late (and still terribly missed) Al Henning had a Beneteau 1 ton name of "Poltergeist." Pictures of a ghost as part of the name and graphics package. When the boat heeled over you could see the word "BOO!" painted under the waterline.

Back in the days before mobile telephones, I would hear a boat hailed by VI Radio, "Stop the Wedding." Never saw the boat but heard it for years.

A Y-Flyer from somewhere in Missouri, "Guadalacunta."

A J-22 in Texas sailed by women, "Does this Boat Make My Butt Look Big?"

A keelboat in Seattle, I think owned by an ob-gyn doctor, "Dystocia" (which has something to do with childbirth). Kind of stupid but better than "Wind Dancer" or "Wave Dancer."

I remember back a number of years when a couple guys from Oyster Bay named their Sonar "Boob Job". It never got much attention even though the name was on the transom in about 1/4 inch high letters. Not much attention until we were at the registration table at Noroton YC when the 70 year old woman at the table inquired as to the name of the boat. The co-owner put his hand up to his mouth (so as to make sure she couldn't read his lips) and real quickly muttered "boob job" under his breath. Well the first time he said it she had no idea what he said. After asking for clarification, he again muttered the name very quickly. I think this went on three or four times before she finally got it... and the only reason she got it was by witnessing the 4 or 5 people doubled over and rolling on the ground out of sheer hilarity.

I hope jaybird1111 I quoted above doesn't have a J-boat of the same name. That would be awkward! :D

A long time ago the Hooper brothers were refused registration for their new FireBall; they wanted to call it "Seducer", but the powers that be decided that was far too racy. Ended up calling it "Sir Juicer"...muuuuch better!

Then there was the Farr 37 jointly owned by a visually impaired [blind] sailor and a psychiatrist. Naturally it was called "Out Of Sight Out of Mind".

Finally the Aus Laser Class had to clamp down on excessively long names when some genius called one " A Pizza Without Cheese Is Like A Woman Without Knees". Buggered if I know how they got that on the transom. :P

Not a song reference... the old SanJuan 26 was "Inevitable" , our Pearson Flyer is "Inexorable" (we start last in the Saturday beercan pursuit races). My son decided his Force 5 we are resurrecting is "Inconceivable" I love that kid. My daughter's Harpoon 4.6.... $200 dollar, damn near dumpster find, was named by PO as "Ocean Waif".... I do think of a song every time I look at it.... its the irony.... such a well behaved and fun li'l boat....and looks like an old roadhouse whore.... Daughter want's it renamed... something dramatic...

Those negative, verb-based, adjectives or whatever they are: insatiable, indomitable, inevitable, irrepressible, have gotten way out of hand. Inconceivable is good and to it I'd add: indigestible, irreparable, and intestinal.

Cheers, Win ever.

i had a dinghy once and gave it it's sail number as it's name - just to see the confusion at regatta tables 'hey you've filled in the form wrong'...'no i haven't' etc :D

cheers

I like it!

Cheers, Win ever.

My first boat was a beat-up green 5-0-5. We called it GREEN PIECE. It was a piece of crap, but it went fast and we had some good times with it.
