if thats the case, its a damn travesty. Pulling for Mark Mendelblatt, total class act.The Star Class is ( potentially) making a swan song and the players that can medal in this class are certainly the cream of the crop!

Like everyone else from Barbados, he's a good sailor. He won't do well in light breezes, but in moderate to heavy air he'll do just fine.

Looks like this might be the Big Ben's last olympics in the Finn. I'd be flabbergasted if he didnt grab the gold. Anna has a great chance at gold, thats for sure.My only solid predictions are Ainslie in the Finn, Merit Bouwmeister in the radial, Tunnicliffe in match racing.
Radials is a little up for grabs. Paige Railey certainly has the talent to medal, although if I was a betting man, I'd say vegas is probably putting better odds on her brother getting some hardware. There's alot more parity at the top of the ladies radial fleet than the finn fleet.
obviously pulling for all of team USA to have good regattas and sail to their potential at least. The brits have tons of talent, but yikes, theres gotta be a TON of pressure and distractions for them on their home turf...
Remember, for the fleet racers this is a much different kinda regatta than most, with the small fleets and often times much slower boats comprising the back 1/3rd than a normal ISAF regatta or gold cup etc.

She's clearly got her head screwed on in terms of expectation but if it blows all regatta Annalise in particular is capable of being a star of the games.

He's right in it. Fought back from 4th place on the last upwind leg.could Big Ben be in trouble?
So I'm going to show how long it's been since I raced dinghy's, but it looks like you can pump the hell out of your main any time you want to.
What decade did that change?

Think they changed the rule after Beijing so that the Finn class can pump as much as they like in over 10 knots.

O'Leary, his face largely obscured by a black-hooded top and dark glasses was whisked past waiting reporters in the mixed zone at the Olympic sailing venue at Portland, close to the English seaside town of Weymouth.
The sailor, still wearing his wetsuit, made no comment when asked about the betting probe, after making a strong start in racing in the heavyweight Star class.
However, James O'Callaghan the Irish sailing team's performance director told reporters shortly afterwards: "The issue is sub-judice so we have no comment to make."
O'Leary's crew mate David Burrows, declined to comment on the allegation, which came to light on earlier this week when the International Olympics Committee (IOC) said an unnamed Irish athlete was being investigated by his national committee.
Burrows was, however, willing to talk about the duo's performance on the water in their two-man Star boat.
"It was tricky out there today. It was hard to get the strategy right," Burrows said, adding he was "glad to have the first day over".
O'Leary and Burrows were second in the afternoon's first race behind the French Star crew and recorded a sixth position in the second race. On points, this put the Irish crew in second position behind Brazilian sailing legend Robert Scheidt and his crew Bruno Prada.
O'Leary's Irish National Olympic Committee could expel him from the Games, if they find him guilty of breaking any of their rules regarding gambling.

im sure someone here knows more about the O'Leary situation... Was the alleged bet on a competitor through a real sports book?
I'll have a go at this.
The story broke in Saturday's Irish Independent newspaper, very vague, un-named sources, loose allegations about an "Irish Olympian alleged gambling scandal," no comment from the Irish Olympic Council.
By Sunday, O'Leary the Star sailor was named in all Irish and UK papers, a "betting scandal" of big proportions, but again no comment from Irish OC or International OC.
Monday's papers (today) have the following:
Irish Times (our "paper of record" not given to hyperoble)
Irish Independent (owned by Tony O'Reilly of Heinz fame, keen to make a buck any which way)
Irish Examiner (based in Cork -- O'Leary's home -- and owned by a family firm which includes a number of good sailors and an International Race Officer)
Tonight, Irish TV news makes no mention.
Full disclosure: I do not know Peter O'Leary, never met him. He is a very good sailor, I am a plonker.
Allegation: O'Leary laid a bet with Boyle Sports (Ireland) for Ian Percy to win the Star medal race in Beijing 2008. And he won money.
Fact: IOC rules prohibits an "Olympic Competitor" from gambling on his/her own sport. (Google it)
Fact: O'Leary did not qualify for the Star medal race in Beijing, and was thus no longer an Olympic competitor. Out of the game. On his way home. No longer bound by Olympic rules (except perhaps drug testing days after the event) (Google it)
Fact: O'Leary and Percy were friendly training partners for a number of years prior to Beijing. (Google it)
My opinion: Because O'Leary was no longer an Olympic competitor, his wager was legal.
Really interesting: We Irish enjoy "the art of begrudgery." We love to resent anyone who has enjoyed success. Be it the neighbour's prize winning roses, the guy down the street who won the lottery, or the successful sailor, we love to knock them down.
Someone, somewhere, in Ireland, knew all about O'Leary's successful 2008 wager and kept it in his pocket, behind the book case, under the mattress, buried in the garden, and decided to fuck with O'Leary's head by giving the details to the Irish Independent newspaper the day before O'Leary's first race. A serious, calculated, kept very close to hand piece of four year old begrudgery.
The population of Ireland is 4.5 million, sailors about 60,000. The begrudger's name will begin circulating the day after tomorrow.

The real news on Irish sailing at the Olympics:
Annalise Murphy dominates opening day of Olympic Radial regatta. 2 wins in fleet of 41. The second race win by 43 seconds. Repeat conditions expected today. (currently in leading the 3rd race too)
Searton & MacGovern take next step. Irelands 49er pair continue the steady improvement shown through out 2012 to lie 6th overall at the end of the first days racing.
O'Leary & Burrows rebound to maintain medal challenge in Star. After a difficult race 3 and going deep in race 4. Irish Star team finish the day 5th overall to maintain their challenge for a medal.

Storck and Moore just took a 49er bullet when the Aussies capsized on the last leg. First for the USofA this Olympcs, good on them!
Nathan was just getting the traditional "last leg swim" out of his system before it really matters. What a recovery though! Still finished 4th. Iain had the kite away almost before the mast hit the water.

Now 4 in a row - and she led 3 races at every mark, the other race she was in 2nd the first lap, and then took over 1st.
Thats impressive !

im sure someone here knows more about the O'Leary situation...
Peter Oleary is one of the nicest sailors I have ever had the chance to sail with and compete against! He is one of the truly good guys in the game and anyone who says otherwise is clearly jealous! I hope that the name is circulated as soon as it is found out.......

+1 she is much faster on the breeze than any other competitor. In race 4 she was on the favored end, but 2nd tier. She just motored right up to the front by aggressively managing the boat through the waves, flatter and more body movement than anybody around her. Awesome dominance.

do rag must be hiding in his basement with the performance of the us competitors, oi oi oi
The US is tied with China for the most medals - what Olympics are you watching? As usual it's the US against the world and we win, you lose. And badmitton and sailing are not athletic contests so they don't count.

And China just got tossed for cheating in badmitton. Big surprise there.

sailing is certainly an athletic contest, if you believe otherwise than youve never sailed a skiff or a laser or a finn or a sailboard in breeze, and are simply ignorant or a slow learner.
the sports that arent athletics are the judged contests- ie- equestrian and synchronized swimming/diving
that said, the medal count is quite skewed by swimming. theres a ridiculous amount of swimming medals awarded. If you de-factor this, i suspect the chinese are kicking US arse even more.

uh no, you took my post too literally. I didnt mean every sport with a judge involved is not athletics. of course every single sport has judges involved to some extent...
the 2 examples i cited are more akin to the arts- equestrian and synchronized swimming/diving
so d-rag, you stand by your claim that sailing is not an athletic contest?

Where do you stand on swimming under your best in a heat or one event to save energy for another? Or having qualified, pulling out on an event entirely even though you're clearly not injured? Or just not bothering to race in events you've entered.

Difference between Jonas Hogh Christensen and Ben Ainsley is only four points now!
Wind was 16 to 14 knots Somewhat what it was all week. Guess wind doesn't have to do with it.
Despite the 15 Kilograms difference in weight between Ben and Jonas.
Jonas Hogh Christensen is falling back further in the tournament.
First Race 470 men just finished:
Here is the top 10:
1 Matthias Schmid, Florian Reichsteaedter, AUT
2 Luke Patience, Stuart Bithell, GBR
3 Mathew Belcher, Malcolm Page, AUS
4 Anton Dahlberg, Sebastian Östling, SWE
5 Lucas Calabrese, Juan de la Fuente, ARG
6 Gabrio Zandonã, Pietro Zucchetti, ITA
7 Onan Barreiros, Aaron Sarmiento, ESP
8 Paul Snow-Hansen, Jason Saunders, NZL
9 Sime Fantela, Igor Marenic, CRO
10 Sven Coster, Kalle Coster, NED

..it'd make for an epic matchraceHope they don't get so far ahead for one to be able to sit on the other in the 10-man, double-points medal race - 1st is already 16 points up on 3rd after 8 races.

Race 9 finished for Finn.
Ben is finishes in 6 th position, Jonas Hogh Christensen 5 th and fellow country men JP Postma finishes first.
There is only 2 points between Ben Ainsley and Jonas Hogh / Christensen.Only race 10 and the medal race to follow.
This will be very close. Last World Championship in Perth, Ben took gold from JP Postma at the last race.
He knows when to win. I think we can expect Gold for Ben, Silver for Jonas Hogh Christensen and Bronze for Gaspic from Croatia.
Race 3 for 470 men
Luke patience and Stuart Bithell from Gbr switched first place with Matthias Schmidt and Florian Reichstadter from Austria.
Race 6 RSX men
Dorian Rijssselberghe rules! 1,1,1,3,1,2 racesequence
Fighting for Bronze are Silver Toni Wilhelm from Germany and Przemyslaw Miarczynski from Poland

Athletic yes.....But not a sport.
Ballet takes lots of athletic skills but it isn't a sport.
Anything in which the results are decided solely on the OPINION of others is not a sport.
