I just heard on the radio that a Sydney Northshore sailing instructor has been charged with grooming a student, through social networks, presumably for sex.

I think this is the first time I have heard of this behavior in the sailing industry. As a father of a teenage girl, who attends coaching clinics, etc., this news made me really stop and think.

actually this not the first, and probably not the last. Mark Haswell has been charged here in the Philippines with Qualified Seduction of a Minor (ie: Rape). so yes, this problem and a host of other deviant sexual offenders do exist in our community. and we parents must be vigilant at all times.

Every Sailing Club or Organisation conduction coaching clinics attended by young people should have a published child protection policy.

Ask to see the child protection policy of the Club or Organisation at which your daughter attends coaching clinics.

As you are no doubt aware, revelations of the extent of Child Sexual Abuse, perpetrated by people who are often shielded by status and trust is staggering.

An accusation of Child Sexual Abuse is a serious matter which can destroy the career of the accused,. It is for this reason that we find decent and respectable people, even parents, often unable to confront the issue.

Listen to your daughter and if you are in anyway concerned, follow your instinct.

The recent Savile case in the UK, has shown us all just how difficult it is for anyone to recognise child abuse, even as an adult, as grooming techniques are very sophisticated. Perhaps the child is threatened or meant to feel that what has happened is somehow their fault and they are too ashamed to seek help. They may even feel responsibility for the abuse.

I would sincerely hope that the above explanation can be applied to you; as the alternative would mean that you are now telling us that you were aware that you were witnessing the abuse of a child and that you, as an adult, chose to do or say nothing?

Global hunt for Haswell

HAVE you seen this man? Southampton-born Mark Haswell is wanted by police in the Philippines in connection with the alleged rape of a 15-year-old British/Filipino girl there.
A warrant for the arrest of 44-year-old Haswell was issued by a court in Pasay City, Philippines, in 2009 but the businessman, who was formerly prominent in the Far East sailing community, is believed to be back living in Britain.
As a result of the warrant, Haswell is on Interpol’s list of wanted persons under the categories of Crimes Against Children, Fugitives, and Sex Crimes.
But a Sun reader has contacted us out of concern that, in spite of this, Haswell has seemingly not attracted the attention of the British authorities.

Haswell, who is thought to own a property in Southampton, was last reported in the Newcastle area in February 2011.
Interpol ask for anyone with information about his whereabouts to contact local police or the General Secretariat of Interpol.

• The accused has effectively admitted the charge in documents filed with the court
• Upon the order of the Secretary of Justice the Arrest Warrant was re-issued, as was the INTERPOL Red Notice
• The accused and his "supporters" well know that a credible case exists and rather than perpetuating an "emperor has no clothes" attitude they would be well-advised to encourage Mark Andrew Haswell to face the Pasay Court volontarily.
• The complainant; her parents; family friends and responsible sailors will not simply "fold their tents and walk away" on this one!

Thanks, Gouv, but actually I meant to say that I don't chase anything more than 18 years younger than me. The given in this equation is that the person HAS TO BE 18. Therefore, the 30 - 12 example is irrelevant.

I just heard on the radio that a Sydney Northshore sailing instructor has been charged with grooming a student, through social networks, presumably for sex.

I think this is the first time I have heard of this behavior in the sailing industry. As a father of a teenage girl, who attends coaching clinics, etc., this news made me really stop and think.

Kinda tough to realize George Hackett looks to be ahead of you.
