My Hobie has the new rudder castings. I keep breaking the vertical plunger that is spring loaded. It keeps getting pushed out and jamming the cam so it will not lock down the rudder blade. Why does this keep happening?

Wallowed out rivet holes.
Bent / wallowed out cam.

No lubrication.

The system works very well, but you need to keep it lubed.

A picture would help with the diagnosis.

new cam, new plunger, new screw in replacement for rivet. lubed w/ marine water-proof grease. all supplied by Hobie. This is -the second time it has happened.

brand new castings?

from a boat that stopped production some years ago...

you are a mysterious man

i feel you have some very basic mechanical problem here

unfortunately if you don't "see" it

you can't describe it

and if you can't describe it

it's very difficult for someone to help you

without seeing it

laying hands on it

working it

can you take the boat to a beach where hobie sailors might be able to help you?

aren't there a lot in florida?

I am in Key West... I am the only Hobie sailor here. Hobie sells new style replacement castings for the Hobie 18. Now that I am back in town... I'll take a few pictures. In simple terms the new replacement plungers appear to be made out of a softer material than the older ones. The nipple on the shaft is bending or being pushed out of alignment and the cam is out of position so the blade does not lock down.
