I heard Dirty Bird (SB3) was having some trouble there on Saturday.

Spoke to one of the crew on the weekend and they said all are ok.

Reports re the whale are incorrect from what I understand, even though the article reads that way.

well LDH who would mention a whale calf ?
does being unable to sail without hitting the biggest rock in sight mean one doesn't know when it's best to shutup ? loose lips sink ships so to speak ?

How close is too close?

• For a vessel, the approach distance is 100m from the whale.
• When calves are in the pod, the approach distance for a vessel is 300m.
• For a prohibited vessel, the approach distance is always 300m from a whale.

• What are the fines for ignoring the rules?

I have to say, they well and tuly caught me by surprise on the weekend.

Was headed out for some training in the Elliotts on Saturday morning, head was admittedly a bit too in the boat adjusting settings before lining up ... next thing you know we have a police boat shepherdinding us because we are within 100m of the whales. Had heard they were in the harbour but did not expect them to be right in at Garden Island. Made my weekend though Whales are so cool!

No whale was involved, just some 'not so flash' crew work
