This could be your year.
After Dan Kessler rocked it last year in a Melges 24 (so impressive), I would think we are going to see some more SB attempts.
J/70 seems like an obvious choice to me.
Registration is here.

Water is warm, was just windsurfing today in board trunks and a rash guard.
Wind is up but the pattern right now is setting up well for windy but not insanely windy. You never know.

Hopefully the boys can make it. It will be good to have Vipers, VX's Wetas, Melges, SB together.

If it's lighter then the SBs will have their day, but I wouldn't count on it.

The gradient falls flat as high pressure returns to the Gorge, with warm to hot temperatures out east. The best chance for upper teen westerlies will be for Jones Beach, Stevenson, and maybe the Corridor as the thermal gradient brings a slight boost in the late afternoon. The North Pacific High keeps the flow going on the coast, where more low to mid 20’s northerlies fill in to the beaches.

Was definatly the year for SBs. Results would likely be a bit different if there had been breeze right to the end.

The Wabbit was unstoppable. They sailed an excellent race. Would have liked to have seen how the Hobie 33 would have faired. They looked set up and ready to go, but dns. The M24 and J35 took a long break together on a sandbar, but recovered very well.Wabbit Wins!! Beats Viper Boat for Boat. Results Here. http://www.hoodriveryachtclub.org

160 gybes
sailed 53 miles to travel 41
Top speed (SOG) was 12.4knts
Avg speed 5.9 knots
close to 8 hours to finish
Avg 2.9 minutes between gybes
I am exhausted! Eventually we just went wing on wing about 2 miles from the finish just to take a break from gybing the kite. The wabbit was super fast and we just needed a few more knots of breeze to help us sail deeper to pace the M24 - but we did get pretty damn good at gybing the boat there by the time we finished.

I felt bad for you guys banging the high angles all day. Wish too that the race had been shortened. What's it like racing in a viper for that long. Soon you guys will be doing offshore overnights.
You must have been shattered. We were the last boat to finish but only the 3rd and last moore to finish and we were 30 min behind you plus another hour drifting, so 9 hrs total.
It does give some appreciation for all the gybes you will also have to do when it nukes. Maybe not such high angles, but the call to gybe comes hot and heavy in the tight spots.
I'm pretty sure this extended time version of the race will never happen again. At least I'll be headed back to hood river if it takes that long to get half way.
One good thing is that all boats got a lot of time to visualize and inspect the course.

That's an awesome visual of the race course.

Yeah, if we had some more breeze we could have sailed much lower, but we were just light enough to force us to sail hotter angles. We tried to sail low with the SC27 and B25, and it wasn't happening, so we kept it hot. Plus we plowed into a rock pile about 5 minutes after the start ripping a keel bolt out, causing us to be very reserved with how far we pushed it for current relief the rest of the race. The Viper was actually very comforatable for that time. I am sore from the gybing, but the boat was pretty well sorted for that duration. We certainly had the opportunity to scope things out without it nuking, so that was helpful for coming years for sure. I will follow you into hood river if this ever happens again, that was crazy to keep going IMHO.

I should have a video pulled together soon.

I counted 54 jibes for us on the Moore between Cascade Locks and Hood River when the Phone ran out of battery. Max Speed over ground 8.1 MPH.
That's about right. Looks like we did around 107 on our Express over the whole distance. A different race this year, but sure a lot of fun and no MOB's!

If we'd counted jibes/tacks in the last 100 yds or 1.5 hrs it would be alot more!!
