Just packing things up for Day one of the Farr 30 Worlds, 19 boats with the clear favorites being four-time F30 Worlds Runner-up Barking Mad (Jim Richardson, Bouwe Bekking tactico) and current World Champ Deneen Demourkas on Groovederci (Cameron Appleton, tactico). We'll post what we can from the course, no ability for live video, but plenty we can do...

Daily videos and photo galleries coming as well, you can see all the photos from pre-worlds on the F30 Facebook page, which, if I am not mistaken, is the most popular One-Design Class page on all of Facebook.

Anyways, we love this class, we love this boat, and I love being a perverted old man in Sweden, the land of scary numbers of super, super hot women seemingly around every corner. They outnumber men about 50 to 1, and they're almost all blonde, thin, and hot. Maybe small exaggerations, but not much!

Some awesome pics coming, Petey might take another day for the first video but I am pretty sure it will be awesome. Wind from 7 to 22, shifts of 20-40 degrees, a great performance from the Dutch Triple P, yet Deneen and Jim Richardson are picking up exactly where they left off in San Francisco...what a great rivalry. Also cool is that Bouwe Bekking (Jim's tactico) was Deneens tactician for the Tour De France in 2010. She told me on the dock, with a chuckle, "It feels pretty good to stick it to Bouwe, a little payback for making my life a living hell for a month on the Tour!"

BMW loaned us a beautiful wagon for a tour of the Bastad and the surrounding area. A gorgeous afternoon as you can see in these photos, and thanks to Christine our tour guide for the Swedish lessons and our "crab and seafood mud" lunch!

Day 2 in Laholm Bay gave us some more beautiful racing, with sunny skies and 10-13 knots from the SW. Deneen Demourkas holds on to the lead by 4 points, with Barking Mad still 5 back and Swedish 'spoiler' Farr Barr 2 sneaking into the second spot with a powerful day. Enjoy.

BTW, I dig the BMW folks here. Can you believe they let me take a brand new 100+K car out all day? And the only damage was a partially deflated (run-flat) tire!

Near-Perfect Day For Swedish Team Vaults 'Farr Bar 2' Into Second Place At Halfway Point

Båstad, SWEDEN (3 August 2012) – Picture-perfect conditions greeted the 132 racers competing for the 2012 BMW Farr 30 World Championship today, with the Northern sun and consistent 10-13 knot winds from the Southwest providing an action-packed, 3-race day for the 19 boat fleet.

2-time Swedish Olympic sailor Martin Strandberg (Malmo, SWE) launched Farr Bar 2 off the line in the first two races, holding on for victory in both and pushing the long time catamaran sailor into the overall Championship lead after five races, if only for a short time. "We had great boatspeed all day, and our tactician was just 100% on today," Strandberg said. "We definitely found our groove in these conditions, a bit lighter and with more stable wind than the opening day." Strandberg had another spectacular start on the final race of the day, though it was maybe a little too good. "We weren't sure whether we were over the line early, but we couldn't take the chance so we went back to the start, and that's where the battle began." Farr Bar 2 would lead an amazing comeback, sailing through the fleet from last place all the way to sixth at the finish.

As the Swede faltered, yesterday's leader and current World Champion Groovederci (Deneen Demourkas, Santa Barbara, California) recovered from two sub-par performances early to win Race 6 convincingly, wresting the lead back from Strandberg. Mainsail trimmer and triple Farr 30 World titleholder Darren Jones felt his team's positive attitude helped them stay focused. "We got caught on the wrong side, had two terrible starts, hit a guy at the top mark and took a penalty, and things weren't looking so flash," he said. "But I told [tactician] Cam 'hang tough, we have plenty of cards to play', and we came back from near last to fourth on the second race, and set up a strong finish to the day." Jones doesn't think Groovederci's 4-point lead gives them much breathing room though. "It's incredibly hard to defend here. "You just have to sail your own race and play these tough shifts the best you can; four points is one wind shift." The final leg of Race 6 saw Groovederci on the right side of just such a shift; Demourkas went from fourth to first in the last 400 meters of the racecourse.

Barking Mad skipper James Richardson (New York, NY) still sits five points behind arch-rival Demourkas despite being over the line in Race 5. "It could have been a better day for us, but getting back to a fifth in that race felt really good," he said. Richardson got caught on the wrong side of a shift on the last leg of Race 6; until that point he looked to have closed the gap to Demourkas. "It always hurts to end the day on a downer, but this beautiful place helps to take the sting out of that," said Richardson, who knows there's plenty of racing left. "We haven't put our best foot forward yet but we're still in the hunt."

Three races are scheduled for Saturday beginning at 1100 local time, with a similar forecast to Friday's racing.

Live wasn't worth it, light air Race 9 and pretty dull, Deneen caned 'em all again! Barking Mad second, The End third. Two of those three will race M32 Worlds next month, one Farr 40 Worlds.

Big congrats to Deneen Demourkas, the only two-time champion in the history of the Farr 30 Class, and the only big boat one design sailor chick to ever helm her way to a World Championship. Also to Twirler, Andrew, Kate, Dana, Cameron, and our own SAer 'Poop'. Awesome job.

Jim Richardson had the second locked up with less than 400 yards to go to the finish. Breeze shut down and the fleet buffalo girled him, Jim gets third in a tough one.

Sunday's racing was up and down and all around, as Deneen Demourkas' Groovederci becomes back-to-back Farr 30 World Champions.  A great celebration ends a lovely week of racing in Bastad, with thanks to BMW, Magic Box, and our gracious hosts at SailingBastad.

GROOVEDERCI DEFENDS WORLD TITLE



Dominant Demourkas Becomes First Two-Time Winning Skipper In Class History



Båstad, SWEDEN (5 August 2012) – With a strong lead over the 2012 BMW Farr 30 World Championship fleet going into the final day of racing, California sailor Deneen Demourkas needed only sail conservatively to clinch her second consecutive World title for her Groovederci team. But instead of covering her opposition on the penultimate race of the Championship, Demourkas continued to do what she’s done in Laholm Bay all week: She won the pin, punched out ahead of her competition, crossed the fleet, and ran away with the victory. It was Demourkas’ fifth bullet of the week, and for tactician Cameron Appleton, it was tougher than it looked. “Reading the wind wasn’t easy out there, but we stuck to our plan, the team executed brilliantly, and Deneen took care of the rest,” he said.



Stockholm-based boats reveled in the light air, with Orca and The End grabbing second and third place, while top Swedish skipper Martin Strandberg (Farr Bar 2) suffered from a poor start and managed just a 10th place. Meanwhile, American competitor Jim Richardson (Barking Mad) crossed the line in fourth. Richard Goransson’s third in Race 10 put him just two points behind fourth place Dr. Harald Bruening’s Topas in the Championship standings while Strandberg’s worst result of the week gave Barking Mad new life; they were now tied on points with the Swede going into the final race.



The battle was on, and with Demourkas having clinched the title and opting to start late in order to minimize her impact on those still fighting for position, Richardson took a page out of her book, starting at the pin end and running away with the early lead. Strandberg was stuck behind competitors, and with Barking Mad extending their lead at every mark, second place was all but locked up. But just 300 meters from the finish, disaster struck. “The breeze swung round to the North and we dropped the kite and tried to sail upwind to the finish. Then it went away completely,” explained tactician Bouwe Bekking. “The fleet saw us wallowing and sailed toward shore, allowing them to stay in the small amount of Southerly wind up the course and sail around us.” Barking Mad eventually finished in 12th place, his worst of the Championship, dropping him to third overall. “It’s counterintuitive, but sometimes you can be too fast for your own good,” Richardson explained. “If our lead was smaller, we’d probably have held the lead to the finish.” The four-time Farr 30 Worlds runner-up was in good spirits despite his disappointment. “At least I didn’t get another second place!” he joked.



Strandberg won the race, while Goransson and Bruening were locked in battle behind him just inches apart. As Groovederci hit the dock, the team’s supporters doused Demourkas and her crew with champagne before throwing the Santa Barbara girl into the chilly North Sea water in celebration. She shivered as the dock erupted into a rendition of “Happy Birthday” for the first two-time Worlds winning skipper in Class history. “This is definitely one of the best birthday presents I’ve ever had, and to win against such a great group of people in this wonderful place makes it truly special,” she said. Demourkas said the strong turnout for the Class is a good sign of things to come. “More and more sailors are figuring out that the Farr 30 is one of the best values anywhere in racing. The boats are tougher than any other grand prix boat, and they stay stiff and fast seemingly forever, and they are faster and more versatile than many of even the most modern designs.”



The fleet has plenty of new blood, too, as evidenced by 15-year old bowman Pierre Gronberg, sailing for his father aboard Happy Hours. “This was my first World Championship, and I can’t wait to do more,” said Pierre. “It’s such an exciting boat, and the fleet is extremely friendly and helpful.”



Class President Demourkas dedicated her Championship win to the memory of three prominent Farr 30 sailors who recently passed away. “Hal Ward, Kevin Conelly, and Guy Stening were three great people who loved the Farr 30 as much as anyone. We miss them dearly.”



Class officials are currently finalizing details for the venue and location of the 2013 World Championship, and they expect to announce their decision soon.

This just in: BORA WINS

Despite the groove winning, we at SA are not happy with the hit count on the one week pinned thread about this once strong, now not so much class. So we have now crowned Bora the official champion of the Farr 30 worlds. It is unfortunate that he was unable to attend the prize giving, or the event for that matter, due to his previous engagement. He was instead winning the Melges 24 worlds. But since nobody gives a shit about what clean thinks is important and we need the hit count to go up, we've decided to turn things upside down and name Bora the winner... Just because. On that same weekend, Bora won the maxi intergalactics, TP 52 worlds, star masters, sunfish NA's, and of course, the jaguar cup. This was held over the winter, but bora should have won it so he did. I might also add that Bora won the 2012 youth championships. He did all of this sailing aboard his New England Ropes/West Marine foiler. Given his amateur status, he is also reigning champion in the J-105, and Beneteau 36.7 class. Merideth Block Photo.
