Has anyone put there experimented with higher aspect foils on a Laser ? the class legal foils just seem way short on length.

....I've tossed a 49er foil in a few times-fits well, significantly deeper,,moves the CLR back some....... definitely more heeling moment,so fatboy bums get off the deck sooner

A long time ago I had the same thoughts. I cut and faired the top end of a Hobie 16" rudder so it would fit in the Laser rudder head. Made it so it points straight down instead of that aft rake. I've never gone back.
The results are no weather helm and not fighting so hard to steer in the high winds of Tomales and SF Bays. I don't race, so it's a happy solution for me. Some day I should try a 49r centerboard, too!

Dennis- Where do you sail on Tomales? I've been to the IYC a few times in my career.

Fred has it all wrong...

Every Laser sailor knows only part of the time is "on top of the water." The best times are while you are breathing or gagging water.

My Tomales Bay launches are at Marconi Cove or at Marshall Boat Works (across the Bay and North of IYC). Nacraoverload, did you sail a Laser or a Cat there?

Still, we are getting off topic. Don't we all wish Lasers had better foils?

..other than realizing that a longer foil could be helpful for bigger blokes,,
I actually think they're pretty good
... the small rudder, and the fact that you MUST learn to steer by balance is probably one of the biggest reasons laser sailors do so well when they go into other classes ;)

..I understand that the horrible breakable plastic blades have been replaced with FG ones :).
