I think there are several reasons that US companies not owned by Larry Ellison won't back sailing but the one reason (warning, rant of the day) that we tend to forget about is that most advertising and sponsorship dollars are controlled by narrow-minded madison avenue "professionals" who are frequently quite junior and have no interest at all in taking a risk. These people would not know a good idea if it hit them in their well dressed asses. All they care about is not getting fired, and the best way to do that is to recommend media plans that are safe and look just like every other company's media plan. It would take a sailing-savvy, highly-involved, job-secure exec or owner of a client company to overrule their agency and insist on using the dollars for the VOR. What's the chance of that????

2N

Especially since the last time we saw sailing in a mainstream US commercial it was for Viagra and it featured a J/29 obviously towed by a motorboat. Quite terrible really...

Beware what you wish for Ian. In the previous races you were able to blame it on the designer (your choice). In One Design you will be able to blame it on the crew (your choice).

not sailing related but interesting on sanya

Lisbon to welcome race for two more editions in deal running to 2018

Lisbon, Portugal - 1 March 2013 - Lisbon will build on the success of the city's outstanding Volvo Ocean Race debut last year by hosting the race in each of the next two editions.
The Portuguese capital staged a groundbreaking stopover in 2011-12 and will be back on the route for the 12th edition in 2014-15 and again for the 13th in 2017-18, Volvo Ocean Race COO Tom Touber announced on 1 March 2013.
The boats will reach Lisbon in 2015 after setting out from Newport, Rhode Island and crossing the Atlantic back to Europe. The sight of Lisbon's iconic 25 de Abril bridge will be familiar as well as welcome, with the city reprising its role as the Transatlantic Destination from the 2011-12 Race, when the boats arrived from Miami.
"What Lisbon achieved in the last Race was remarkable when you think that the city was making its debut," said Race COO Touber, who made the announcement at the Torreão Nascente in Portugal's historic capital.
"Lisbon is a great port city and the people came out in their thousands to welcome the sailors as their own. The Race Village was a hive of activity, with everyone coming together to give the stopover a distinct Portuguese feel. It was a truly great success and we can't wait to come back."
Mayor of Lisbon, António Costa, added, “Welcoming the Volvo Ocean Race to Lisbon for its next editions will again represent a great opportunity to promote the culture and heritage of Lisbon on a global scale.

"This will be an important landmark for the City as a privileged stage for great events. In addition, the event will also give us the opportunity to promote regular sport among our population, in this case directly related to sailing, a sport with great tradition in the country and one of the few in which we have a rich background in terms Olympic athletes.

"It is in the best interest of the city of Lisbon to create the best conditions possible in order to continue hosting the Volvo Ocean Race in Lisbon.”

Lisbon is the eighth Host Port to be announced for the 2014-15 Race, which already has three confirmed and publicly announced teams with more than 18 months to go before the start.
The Race will start from its home in Alicante, Spain before visiting Recife in Brazil and going on to the United Arab Emirates capital of Abu Dhabi. Later in the Race, the teams will dock at Auckland, before rounding Cape Horn and reaching Itajaí, the second of two Brazilian stopovers. From there, the route takes the teams north to Newport and across the Atlantic to Lisbon. The Race will finish in Gothenburg, Sweden, with the final stopovers, as well as dates and distances, to be announced in the coming weeks.
The three teams so far announced are the all-female Team SCA, Abu Dhabi Ocean Racing, which will once again feature Britain's twice Olympic silver medallist Ian Walker as skipper, and a team from the Brazilian state of Pernambuco.

Lose the "fire and ice" concept and keep the nice minimalist logo and it would improve drastically.

Looks more like someone clipped a cheap photoshop explosion and stuck it on...

vsail did advise that it's only an artist's impression. There's no suggestion that this has been sourced from Alinghi.

The artist may or my not be Pierre's 13 year old nephew with a 2003 version of MS Paint!

Welsh capital Cardiff unveiled as Host Port for Volvo Ocean Race2017-18

Cardiff, UK - 6 March 2013 - Cardiff will host a stopover in the 13th edition of the Volvo Ocean Race in 2017-18 – a move that will see the world's premier round-the-world sailing race visit Wales for the first time ever and mark its return to the United Kingdom for the first time in over a decade.

In a break from the ongoing series of announcements for the 12th edition in 2014-15, the Race's Chief Operating Officer Tom Touber revealed the forward-looking agreement during a presentation at the Norwegian Church in Cardiff Bay.

The Volvo Ocean Race, which began life in Portsmouth as the Whitbread Round the World Race in 1973, moved its headquarters from England to its new home in Alicante, Spain in 2010. The last time the UK had a stopover was in 2005-06 in Portsmouth.

"It is fantastic to be able to announce that the Race will once again stop in UK waters, and a first visit to Cardiff is a very exciting move," said Race COO Touber.

"The competition to host the Volvo Ocean Race has never been more fierce, with over 80 ports involved in the process for the 12th and 13th editions. Cardiff made a particularly impressive bid to win one of the coveted European slots and with such outstanding facilities and great enthusiasm I'm convinced that we will have a stopover to remember."

Touber added: "The fact that we are making this announcement five years in advance is a very strong signal about the future of the Race and the commitment to it from the Volvo companies."

Also in attendance at the announcement were Edwina Hart, Minister for Business, Enterprise, Technology and Science in the Welsh Government, Cardiff Council Leader Cllr Heather Joyce and Cardiff Council Cabinet Member for Sports, Leisure and Culture Cllr Huw Thomas.

Welsh Government Business Minister, Edwina Hart, welcomed the news and said: “The Volvo Ocean Race is a truly global event and its arrival in Cardiff in a few years’ time will mark another historic milestone in Wales’ rise as an outstanding destination for world class events. The Welsh Government is fully committed to attracting more major international sporting event to Wales.

"Hosting a stopover in the Volvo Ocean Race will generate a substantial economic boost for the Cardiff and Wales economy. We look forward to welcoming thousands of new visitors to Wales, who will experience a vibrant capital city and a nation with a rich and diverse cultural heritage.

“We look forward to working with the Volvo Ocean Race and its partners, along with Cardiff Council and Cardiff Harbour Authority to deliver a world-class event.”

Cllr Joyce said: “This will bring hundreds of thousands of visitors to the city, and be hugely beneficial to the local economy.

“Being awarded the successful bid for one of the most important sailing events in the world once again demonstrates Cardiff’s ability to deliver major international sporting events on the world stage. It proves our reputation as an event city as well as providing an opportunity for many non sailors to try the sport through a co-ordinated programme of sailing activities before, during and following the event.”

While this will be the first British stopover in some time, the Volvo Ocean Race has retained strong links with its former home.

The One Design Volvo Ocean 65 racing yachts that will be used in the 2014-15 and 2017-18 editions are all being built by a consortium led by the Green Marine boatyard near Southampton, on England's south coast. The other three participating yards are Persico in Italy, Decision in Switzerland and Multiplast in France.

So far, eight ports have been unveiled on the route for the 12th edition of the Volvo Ocean Race in 2014-15. They are Alicante(Spain), Recife (Brazil), Abu Dhabi (United Arab Emirates), Auckland (New Zealand), Itajaí (Brazil), Newport, Rhode Island (United States), Lisbon (Portugal) and Gothenburg (Sweden), where the race will finish.

Race organisers will announce the remaining ports for the 2014-15 Race over the coming weeks.

it's not what's happening in 2015, it's what's happening between now and then, not that it matters for the next decision. would be interesting to know what VOR's commercial division and SF's conversations have been like; I'm sure they've chatted.

Also no clear plans for a Sanya team either

Anyone read about the dramatic construction of the new VO 65?

Well it's not so dramatic after all. Backing times are just somewhat longer :)

Guess the chemical engineer didn't really had the right recipe.

The first VO 65 was promised to the SCA team.

When they really start early with training I guess they make a chance. I saw the team and I know it's been tried before but this time I believe in it.

What I am a bit concerned about is that the VOR site only mentioned SCA as team.

http://www.volvoocea...m/en/teams.html

Latest was the entrants were:

SCA

Pernambuco/Recife
Abu Dhabi
China or Hong Kong
ENTZ/Camper
Berg with someone (possibly in conjunction with one of others on this list)
Mapfre or other from Spain
UBS/Alinghi

And the new VO65 aren't that expensive so why are there not any more teams.

What happened:

1 MOD 70 finaly won?

2 Ernie blew the whole VOR to pieces just as Larry did with the AC 32?

3 because the yard can't build the right boat with the right backing times everyone retreated?

4 The SCA team in so invincible everyone else abandoned the race?

5 The VOR is transformed into a woman's race?

And that lorient is finally official is good news :)

3 Announced teams so far: SCA, Pernambuco/Recife, and ADOR. Last I spoke with Knut, he was sure of at least 8 boats.

Still no word on exactly how boats will get to Abu Dhabi. I still think VOR management is missing out on a "pit stop" in India. Either load the boats on Sevenstar there, or get them all together so they have an escort through Hormuz......

Still not much word on the Onboard Reporter campaign. It seems to be good press for them, but with only 3 teams there's not a gushing need for reporters yet.....

You mean this Knut

Well if he doesn't know who else would?

And about the reporter. I think you have to be under 30 years old to do that. I remember the Horrevoets accident and he intentionally didn't wanted to go because he was to old. He was 31 years old. This is an event for the very very fit. Olympic might be the best description. Even for the reporter.

My wife and son and kitten would not like it all if I volunteered ;)

Besides; my family yachting is good enough for me.

If you think 31 is too old you should have a chat with Stu Bannatyne, he may disagree... ;)

Well you are right but he is participating a lot longer. I would be a first timer and then 51 is way to old.

Here is Stu's  VOR CV:

Stu has participated in the Volvo Ocean Race and its precursor, the Whitbread Race six times. In the most recent edition of the race, Stu was Co-Skipper and Watch Captain for Camper powered by Emirates Team NZ which finished in 2nd place overall. Stuart has been on the winning boat 3 times out of 6.

  • 2011 / 12 – 2nd : Co-Skipper, Camper Emirates Team NZ
  • 2008 / 09 – 1st : Watch Captain, Ericsson 4
  • 2005 / 06 – 6th : Watch Captain, Movistar
  • 2001 / 02 – 1st : Watch Captain, illbruck
  • 1997 / 98 – 5th : Watch Captain, Silk Cut
  • 1993 / 94 – 1st : NZ Endeavour

Important information regarding one of Team SCA’s coaches.

Very sadly, Magnus Olsson, one of Team SCA’s coaches, suffered a stroke this week. He is receiving the best medical care and our thoughts are with him and his family.

Richard Brisius and Team SCA

Hang in there Mange!

Sadly he did not make it, feels like shit right now as he was a friend of the family. The world is not fair that's for sure, I guess he just rounded the windward mark and began his downwind run.

Something i have been wondering for a long time.

The boats are one design yes, but will the sails also be one design or will teams be able to run their own sail programs?

Despite all the announcements in the newspapers
the official VOR site only mentioned SCA as a team.

How come?

ADOR is official and the Brasilian Pernambuco government is sponsoring a team, too.  These are the two other "official" entries so far, besides SCA.

Also, doesn't the Spanish need to field a team, or two, so long as Alicante is the headquarters of the VOR?

I don't believe they have any requirement to enter a team. However I think the political ressure is definitely there to put in a team. Can't be easy to find the balance between 'look at how much work we are producing' and 'look at those twats spending money when the rest of the country is broke'.

For sure in the UK there is an issue getting sponsors to part with money, as sometimes it is purely a case of 'we should not be seen spending this at the moment'. Though I get the feeling it is just starting to change.

i wouldn't put my money on the pernambuco team. both the recife city mayor and the pernambuco state governor have denied their respective govenrments' sponsorship commitments/deals.

Interesting development, Mapfre/Telefonica is currently in Aukland - being transferred to a new Aussie/Queenslander owner. I guess a Spanish entry is out for good without a training boat?

THat is a bit of a leap, Campos owned 2 older VO70s prior to the last race. Given that the new boats are so different there is no requirement for having the very latest VO70 in order to train. Also without the ability to make any changes to the boat the preparation time required has dropped dramatically.

T Blue went to Sanya and T Black was sold to become a charter boat. The Campos Navy is a little thin right now

Pierre from Vsail puts his hand up!

Mea Culpa. I have to admit that I precipitated into declaring Alinghi’s entry in the 2014-15 Volvo Ocean Race a done deal. However, our very reliable and authoritative Swiss sources at the beginning of the year were overly enthusiastic over the prospect of a Swiss team, backed by Ernesto Bertarelli, dominating offshore sailing. That’s where the alleged announcement date came. Everything was supposed to go as planned, the official entry was a matter of days or weeks and a press conference was to be held in Geneva on the day of Alinghi’s 10th anniversary since winning the America’s Cup in Auckland.

An important factor we learned last week shed some more light on what the true situation might be. A few months back, we were told Brad Butterworth would be in charge of the team and that Bertarelli would provide the funding. That seemed to be the ideal scenario. Butterworth would be able to snatch the best sailors, early enough before someone else tempts them as with the new one-design VO65 yacht, experienced sailors will now come at a premium and will be able to command hefty salaries, twice or even three times as high as last time.

However, it seems that things weren’t as rosy according to other sources. It appears that Bertarelli didn’t want to fully fund the team but just provide a strong initial backing that would then definitely have to be complemented with additional corporate sponsorship. Under that alleged deal, Bertarelli was willing to provide half of the target budget, rumored to be set at 30 million euros. So, the Swiss billionaire would give Butterworth 15 million euros but the kiwi skipper would have to find the rest.

The Volvo Ocean Race, unlike the America’s Cup, doesn’t hold such an irresistible appeal to rich sailors, basically for a very simple reason. They can’t be onboard. Their idea of sailing doesn’t include spending three weeks cramped with ten more sailors inside an uncomfortable, cold and wet yacht that is hammered by the winds and waves of the southern oceans. There is nothing wrong with that and it’s understandable that if they decide to give some of their fortune, at least they have to have some fun.

Apparently, Bertarelli’s intention wasn’t to make any money out of that but since he wasn’t going to be onboard, he also didn’t want to lose either. Will now Butterworth be able to find the other 15 million euros? Time will tell.

Unfortunate, an Allinghi team would have added a good amount of bullshit and hilarity to the race, bit like latter stages Telefonica last time round!

How many teams are confirmed now? It's getting late enough, close to the launch of the first boat.

Are SCA still the only team training?

Im pretty sure a few guys from malta bought her. Wouldn't go near her though. The boat has been sitting on a cradle rotting. All they did was took the mast out and put it back in, the keel rams are so rusty it wont cant

Ireland is full of bullshitters mate....

I sailed for the whole of last summer and I was there through the entire refit. We took every single bit of that boat apart and reassembled her with a lot of new gear. She was in excellent ocean racing condition.

She was in good shape when I was on too, as long as you didn't motor over 6 kts.

True North (GD) is halfway across the Pacific, taking a minor holiday at Christmas Island. A little work on the bow was done there too, but otherwise she's nice and fit

Now has a fixed prop so that motor problem is fixed, finally! They broke a longitudinal in the bow but it is all fixed and I hear the test sail went well!!
