I want to see pictures of an AC72 (Oracle or Artemis or both) sailing around with L'Hydropetre. It is possible it could happen this week!
Do we have any idea if the Artemis wing is on-site, let alone fixed?

If everything checks out the wing may go in on Wednesday for the inaugural sail, but we'll see,

Heard from some informed sources that security at the base is pretty tight, even for some supplying parts to the campaign.

Heard the launch will be on Tuesday to check out the steering, boards, etc.

I thought it was supposed to be today? Maybe it was the week of the 27th?

The wing is on site, has been for some time. There is a large group from King Marine working on it and from what info I can gather it
should be ready in about 2 weeks. My guess is that they will test it on the Tri first before putting it on the cat.

Seems logical. If you're worried about it falling over again, why have it land on all the crunchy bits of your new ride? Not to mention, it'll let them do wing testing without starting the 30 day clock.

J-Bird, which 'site' did you mean in the above? Alameda or Valencia. Where do you think the 'Orma72' is?

I had not heard, yet, that they brought the tri over, as well. Has anyone seen it?
Makes sense, though, if they have moved their whole camp over, and the ability to work the wing on the tri with unlimited time.

ORACLE TEAM USA has started the countdown to launching its first AC72 wingsailed catamaran this week.
A Media Day is planned for Friday 31 August, the first scheduled sailing day for the boat that will play a central role in the San Francisco team’s bid to win the America’s Cup again next year.
Today, the giant 12 story high wing was lifted at Pier 80 in a successful test of the new ground handling systems.
“This was one tick in a very long check-list of essential steps before the boat can go into the water,” said Mark Turner, shore manager.
Upgrading from the identical one-design AC45s used during last week’s America’s Cup World Series event in San Francisco is going to be no small order; the AC72 is more complex, more powerful and entirely custom designed and built by ORACLE TEAM USA.
“Compared to the AC45, the AC72 is twice as long, five times as powerful and 100 times more complex,” explained Dirk Kramers, one of the 25 strong design team who has worked for two years on the team’s first boats. “It will also be 25% faster, capable of speeds over 40 knots (45 mph).”
Constructed entirely from carbon fiber, the AC72 hulls were built at the team’s base in Pier 80, San Francisco. The cross beams connecting the two hulls, wingsail, appendages (rudders and lifting daggerboards) and other key structures were made in New Zealand by Core Builders Composites.
“This is one of the most intricately detailed racing boats ever built,” commented Tim Smyth of CBC. “Not only this, but it is also one of the most dramatic looking.
The next step for the team is to lift and fit the 130-foot wingsail onto the hull. Once preliminary checks on shore are complete, the boat then touches Bay water for the very first time. The myriad mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic systems that control the steering, wing and sails have to be tested, and before sailing is attempted a team of engineers and boatbuilders must sign off on the structure after a series of structural and data read-outs are approved.
The first sail is scheduled for Friday, subject to constant review.

What team is next to unveil after OR and when will we first see the AC72s in action?
After Oracle there is only one team left to unveil its AC72, and I have a hunch that their boat is going to look remarkably similar to the Kiwi boat.

Can see camber control at the top of the rig there, is pretty much what I've been thinking the TNZ wing uses too.
4 part trailing element like TNZ but without the intermediate hinge points.
Hinge is kinked, twister or not?

They're using the Paul Bieker counterweight, didn't see it on ETNZ.
Wot, still wire and pulleys instead of hydraulics for flap actuating?
The AR wing is the outlier, then.

Has something to do with what's described here if I recall correctly, http://en.wikipedia....iki/17_(number)Nice boat. Can't wait to see it on the water. What is the significance of the #17 for Larry Ellison? I can't find the answer anywhere. Is it because he was born on the 17th?

I looks like a giant C Class. Way less freeboard. I'm not sure if I buy the center "Pod" grinding station theory. Seems like you would be giving up a lot of righting moment.
Cross between a C-Class and a D35, with DZ bows and rear cross beam.
#86
Posted 29 August 2012 - 06:10 PM
Wing looks like its got four rear elements. It's suspended off the crane still, not over the water yet. Looks like a lot of rocker, don't see any of the steps in the bow like Artimis. Doesn't have gills in the hull ala entz. basically looks like a larger ac45. Does have some sort of a frame on the bow, bowsprit support I guess. Looks like might be removable? No stern scoops, blunt stern like entz. Rear cross beam is all the way against the stern. Straight boards, can't really see the boxes.
#87
Posted 29 August 2012 - 06:11 PM
Very true. I'd much rather be the team with an aero optimized boat from the get go though, than the other teams having to experiment with the aero add-ons. They didn't have the luxury Oracle did of real world data, though. I'm sure their 2nd gen boats will show many more aero features built in to the structure. So, she has a lot of drag reducing appendages, but nothing prevents the other teams from retrofitting their boats like DZ was if you all remember...
