I dunno. It's a good reminder that, deep down, under that fir, and putting aside our sometimes air of human superiority, we really aren't that different after all? I'll remember that, in a sad but a good way, whenever I feel better than mere animals.
My view is we're all just different branches of the same natural selection process.
And it's a cruel world. For humans, our big brains are responsible for our survival, which necessitated killing for protein like many other species--brainpower requires energy.
To me the problem with our world is that humans are a scourge on the planet. There are just too many of us so we're destroying it. Why the population explosion isn't part of the public discourse amazes me; it was when I was a kid in the 70s.
But the universe will do just fine without us. It's a big place.
#1708

Humans are pretty good at establishing a number of qualities that compose superiority, and then claim superiority based on those.
We can say, humans have intelligence, technology and an advanced social structure. Therefore we are superior than other creatures.
However what makes intelligence, technology and advanced social structure qualities that necessitate superiority.

Why do leaves track the sun like a mechanized solar panel? Why do flowers close at night and open when the sun comes up? Why do both plants in the wild and house plants respond to music and become stronger and more vibrant? Why do some plants send a sent chemical signal to others of their species when their foliage is be eaten by animals? Why do those other plants that recieve the chemical signal send a venomous poison to their leaves? Something is going on there... intelligence? There is a distinct possibility there.
While I'm not advocating for a belief in the intelligence of plants, I do think that intelligence means more than just "thinks like a human".
There are many types of intelligence out there. We aren't the only expression of smarts on the planet. We were just lucky that our combination of neocortex development, bipedal locomotion and tool using made us successful.
#1721
Posted 06 November 2012 - 06:44 PM
At one time I would have been skeptical of the intelligence of plants and animals. But that was more from what I was taught about such beliefs in general. From observations of both plants and animals over the years, I'm more and more willing to be receptive to what my senses tell me.
But what do I know, I'm just a retired pilebuck. One thing I do know, is I've become more thankful and respectful of all plants and animals over the years.

Last year I went to Baker's nursery and on their counter
they had several huge blooms of what I realized it was a cereus. It was around 3.30Pm and I was surprised that the flowers were opened.
They told me that they received the blooms from one of their customer that has a vast collection of cereus plants.
I was very interested in them but so far I was not able to find any day blooming cereus.I have several night blooming cereus plant that are doing good and I will like to try my hand at the day blooming ones if somebody has them and might give me a cutting or they can tell me where to buy them.

Why do those sometimes open in daylight?
Do I look like a botanist ?
Perhaps it was colder that night then it was accustomed to, and it warmed up later in the evening or early morning....
Then the sun came up,but they weren't finished blooming.
This time lapse is about 24 hours from 11pm to 11pm. The Cereus got going like it was going to bloom overnight, but we guess it was a little too cold for comfort, and didn't end up finishing until the day time.

Well, it's the best tool we have... as judged by the standard of 'Who Can Invent New Deadlier Weapons Faster' followed rigorously for a couple centuries, then modified slightly to 'Who Can Invent Cool Stuff To Sell Faster.' The impact of statistical psychology applied to advertised has not fully weighed in yet, I suspect we're looking at another epochal change-over.

No doubt...I've always been open to suggestions, even if it's from an apprentice or a clam digger, and definitely all ears to those who have more knowledge and experience then I have....sometimes we do what we have to do....more importantly I like seeing everyone that went in, come out in a good state of mind and body, whether it be in a real world everyday living or work situation or otherwise. Most of my life I've been responsible to seeing to the needs of others....now that I'm retired probably don't have to do that to the degree I once did...I just like seeing everything work out for everyone in a good way, if I'm involved, because then I know I've done my part and that gives me a good feeling.

well, the way it works at the Sons household, when one of us leaves the one at home becomes a single parent of 3 extremely busy kids. The logistics rival most military airlifts. So the returning parent is the one obliged with providing the break since they had the good fortune to spend time with adults.

me I'm rather wondering about that fire extinguisher in the toilet ... is there a meaning to it ?OK Ish I've tried but your going to have to explain that sequence.
You'd rather stay home? Perving leads to tummy upsets? Swimming in red tide creates flammable turds? Girls with no undies shouldn't swim when they are having their period because it gives boys Gastro?
No, I got it. The chick with her period and the guys with gastro have polluted dolphin cove (Nagano reference) and the last shot is the old guys only way out!
