That is a proper lot of boat!!! What are your intentions for her?

I don't know about everyone else, but I would be living on that shit! Me and that boat would only part for grocery store runs. Holy crap she's a beaut!

Yes.

Well, that explains the cabin sole. It's a security feature to keep the ninja assassins off their guard.

wait, is that the sole on this boat? What's with that little surprise drop-down recess in the floor? I suppose with that pattern, it will easily hide the blood stains when you trip over that recess and split your skull open on the sharp corners of that 'nav table' or whatever it is.

Hey Rick, you having trouble following along? No, that is the sole of this boat:

Why go half way? If one really wanted to jump into wooden vessels with full heart and sole there is always this beauty:

Nah -- the bordello interior is from the yacht Agneta, referenced earlier in the thread as an example of perpetual varnishing. Not Rebecca's saloon. Agneta's cabin sole wells are there for ... I have no idea what they are there for. Can't be headroom. So you can route systems under the raised perimeters? Maybe the owner is an orthopedic surgeon and likes fixing broken ankles? Impractical, ugly, and overdone. Much of art resides in knowing when to stop.

Rebecca.

Yea, I know, a schooner, I know, split rigs old, all wood, yea, I know, more upkeep, a design from the Alden 20's with a full keel and split rig, yea, I know, a gaff rig, yikes, maybe better served with a modern design, yea, I know, Perry, Fontaine, Johnstone, and so many others, but still Rebecca, a boat of dreams, one might imagine, built so long ago, and still, just a short time ago ..

Rebecca, I owe her payment (!), a survey, and respect served by maintaining her build and design, Rebecca, she's my boat now...

How about some info for those that dont know her?

This is it.

BTW, Barney Sandeman is a great yacht broker, he's the broker on Rebecca and a lot of the best classic yachts that actually get sold. He is the one who managed to get us S'agapo. It took almost two years but Barney never let up, was always nice about it and worked through an amazing amount of crud for what was (for him) a small boat and not a big commission. I asked to sail a Spirit-46 and a month later was doing Cowes Race week aboard as sister ship, Dido. I asked to test sail S'agapo and a week later was in the Med aboard her. The guy hustles. He covers all of Europe, the Eastern US and Caribbean; and I do mean covers it. He'll be standing right next to you on 24 hours notice in any of those places.

I rarely recommend anyone in that profession; but Barney is a first class guy, a great sailor and became a friend through the process. A fella could do a lot worse than Barney when picking a broker to work with.

And there's how that relatively small commission is every bit as important as any other.

I'm 100% with you pogs. It looked like reis got his feathers ruffled in the 'What boat is this' thread. I and others called him on it and I suppose he felt that warranted a "you...you...A-HOLE!" Risky Business style PM to me.

Drama aside, it seems tough getting a straight answer about anything from this guy. It's been a bit sketchy since he showed up claiming to be 'someone famous' and 'needing a security detail'.

This is a public forum and if you're going to participate, a certain amount of integrity is necessary if you want folks to take you seriously. He reminds me too much of a certain other integrity-lacking character. I'm inclined to think it's not 'him', but sheesh, you'd think at least you'd steer clear of trying to emulate the guy.

Otherwise, hey, no one here has any obligation to prove a damn thing. But if you're going to come out and make a public claim that you've just 'placed a contract' on a pretty significant vessel, you'd think you'd be excited about sharing the details and making it clear. Hell, bragging about shit for real is half the fun! :)

When this first hit, Sons and I put up a bullshit bet on when he would back off and what the excuse would be. I bet a week and the reason would involve his personal sushi chef not digging the galley. But who knows. Maybe he's legit. But as others have said, the burden of proof is way high. For me he's gotta sail the damn thing to Pikes Bay, full security detail in tow. I'll apologize for being a tool and buy him a good bottle of scotch. But until then, fool me once.....

Personally I think you all are being rather hard and unpleasant here. As far as I know they guy has not been caught in an outright lie yet - correct? If you want to be sceptical, fine, and if you don't want to participate in his thread or respond to his posts, fine, but at this point pro-actively dumping on him seems a bit over the top.

If it turns out to be proven that he has lied about Rebbecca he will have earned a lot of scorn but even then he is not in DT's league.

DT is a different case. He crossed the line for me when I asked a question about cameras and he made a response impersonating

Onne van der Wal. That combined with the continuous proven lieing put him in the actively shun camp.

Maybe. We will know when the listing is marked as "Sold".

http://www.yachtworl...9/United-States

There is a step in between. Brokers can mark a listing "sale pending" instead of sold. This is often (but not always) done when there is a contract that has been accepted by both sides and they are awaiting sea trial, survey, insurance/financing approval, whatever must be done before closing.

Some brokers don't do it at all. It might discourage a person who might buy the boat after the pending deal falls through from calling. The broker wants to continue collecting info on interested parties until the closing happens.

OTOH, if a customer calls and the first thing you tell him is, "There is a contract on that boat" it may not go well from that point. People get irritated when you offer something for sale but do not actually have it to sell.

Anyway, I just checked, and this one is not "sale pending" on yachtworld.

Beau should know. Is Barney in the habit of marking boats "sale pending" or not?

Tom,

I do know the broker quite well. But, to his great credit, he would never discuss a buyer and seller with me or anyone else without their prior permission. That's the way Barney is. I simply asked if Rebecca had sold and Barney said that there was someone who was working their way towards a purchase. He certainly wouldn't ever say who or when - that would be far beyond what is reasonable for a proper broke to do and Barney is a very very proper broker.

A lot of the conjecture in this thread is a little silly. We'll all know eventually how it turns out. There isn't anything that any of us would do one way or the other about the process, unless one of us wanted to compete for the boat. As a result, I'd suggest we all get back to calling each other bastards and other names and forget about this until it either happens or not - no offense.

The problem is the inconsistency. I was pulling for you ries, but there is just too much 'foo foo' about you. There are plenty examples of folks here who understand the public/community nature of CA/SA. Guys like KimB, ND, EStar, all have willingly shared there experiences. Not once did they make a claim and NOT back it up with real world experience.

No one asked you if you 'placed a contract on Rebecca'. You offered that up without provocation. Now we're all waiting for the follow through. If you don't want the public's attention, don't open the can, if you know what I mean.

Despite your little rant via PM, you're ok. Not that you need any approval from guys like me or anyone else, right?

I think we're just asking for honesty. This is a community. Honesty and clarity are pretty important in any community - internet or otherwise.

Of course, you don't have any obligations to the community. And just like if you lived on my block and made fantastic claims, I'd write you of as a poseur until you proved me wrong.

And BTW, I'm not so proud as to not admit I'm wrong. Happens here all the time for me. So prove me wrong. Or not.

Another ringing endorsement for the broker.

He should not be discussing any details, of course, but as Estar pointed out, it's reasonable and normal for him to answer whether the boat is actually under contract. Buyers want to know that kind of thing, and will sometimes write up a contract to present if the pending one falls through.

Where is the boat? I guess I blew an opportunity, I met Nat Benjamin the other day, had a very nice visit but I completely spaced out asking him if he knew anything about this. He's a real gentleman, and judging from the tour he gave me of Charlotte, Rebecca in person must be a terrific boat.

I'm still hopeful that maybe reis is a real buyer, and by being nice I'll be invited for a sailboat ride. Sailboat rides are fun. I went for my last ride of the season on my boat yesterday, and it was wheeeeeee kind of fun, southern New England was breezy. Texas isn't, but the enchilada cooking downstairs smells as good, in it's own way, as the seared scallops on the boat. They don't sell Vietnamese prawns on the dock in Cuttyhunk this time of year.

You guys need to post your social security numbers, your bank accounts, your arrest records, resume's, and too, your wife's personal information, including her banking numbers, her employers, her father's personal information, and her grandfather's personal information, before anything like a ride in a sailboat might be considered by my vigorous security detail suspicious of others from, well, you know, those regulars whom attend wasteful pretentious and excessively serious sailing internet sites. :)

Dude. Back away from the shovel and stop digging the hole. :)

Boy, if he'd just drop all those capital letters and punctuation and throw in a bunch of hyphens. The tone is pitch perfect.

Nah, he hasn't mentioned summering in France or being a pilot once, and our boy can't get through a thread without that. He was asking about his loose rudder on another forum and managed to work both of them into the same post. This guy sounds like your garden variety troll. Pathetic really.

Or not.

What does anything you say have to do with Rebecca? I'll prove nothing here my friend, but, and always, do love the GL 40, as I have told you, a very, very, pretty boat.

I have so many back-ups to Rebecca's purchase it would make your sailing head spin, but, no matter, Rebecca is true to a sailor's heart. But, I'll tell you, so aren't 80 - 95' aluminum builds, just, in their own way, as Rebecca's! (And can afford much more security folks, I might quickly add)!

I thought you bumped bottom the other day! I meant to write to tell you that your boat is no longer safe, but I may be persuaded to offer you salvage value.

In southern NE if you don't bump occasionally you're not having fun. In Maine, the bumps are rocks and altogether different.

Did you sail to Cuttyhunk saturday? Crap, I left in the morning, had to bug off the boat for the season and make a sunday morning plane in Providence, I really wish we'd met. I had the sailing dink out and was having small boat fun. We need to make a point of it next season.

Are you going to the newport boat show? I need someone to swing by the Marion-Bermuda booth, they emailed and said they have some freebie for me.

Hey Reis, quit being a jerkoff. I tried being nice and giving you the benefit of the doubt. Now you can just fuck off. I don't care what boat you have. You're an asshole. I wouldn't take a ride with you on Maltese Falcon.

LOL, it'll be resolved within a week or two, well, all things otherwise resolved. I am disappointed in the negotiations, but, having said this, it is only money, but this is my disappointment, truth be said, Rebecca deserves better than only money, and bull. She deserves poetry and the sea, which she and I have an abundance of...

It would appear the distinction between Poetry and A Word Salad is completely lost on you...

I'm sure the broker - of whom we've heard other posters speak of in nothing less than glowing terms - appreciates having your "disappointment" in the way the deal was allegedly done posted on the internet, as you've done in this post, and in #91... I've never done a deal on a million dollar boat, and I never will... But I certainly can't imagine blabbing about some difficulties that arose on an internet sailing forum - in the midst of such a negotiation - is either proper, or much appreciated by the other principals involved...

Speaking of "deserving better", indeed...

Sorry, sounds like I just missed you. We did Nantucket to Cuttyhunk on Saturday and then Cuttyhunk to the Sakonnet on Sunday. Both great sails. I had the sailing dink with me; we could have had a little regatta complete with celebratory imbibing afterwards. Next year. I've been happy with my boat and gear for a few years so haven't made the show.

Don't want to get into this but I think "reis" is DT. "Poetry" my ass.

Why I love this place: From freeform verse (KD) to haiku (Valis). Talent (and humor) abounds. Variation on the (haiku) theme:

"Poetry" my ass.
Unlike Reis, Rebecca is.
Back to boat talk now.

A beautiful boat
Who the Hell is Reis? D.T.?
"Poetry" my ass!

(A Haiku)

Rebecca is quite a fine schooner,
Who will be sold later or sooner.
She'll go back to sea,
if Reis pays the fee,
An event once in a blue mooner.

Or....

A wonderful schooner, Rebecca,
Beauty, charm, and speed a trifecta.
She was put up for sale,
A long sordid tale,
Of terms of exchange not perfecta.

I sailed the 53' schooner Cubuf in the SF Bay Area out of Coyote Point (owned by Jack Murray, Mayor of San Mateo and my dad's best bud) for many years as a teenager back in the early 60's....gaff staysail, marconi main, double headsails, same cabin/cockpit design. I remember using the ratlines running up the forward mast to kick the gaff free. We had a William Garden built 30' double-ended sloop at the time named Calypso, and I had a custom made El Toro....all wood. I actually enjoyed doing bright work on all three. That's where I learned to sail and now 50+ years later still am. Good times.

Congratulations. There is absolutely nothing like the classic wooden schooners.

Actually Reis, my daughter and nearly all of her friends are gay. I'm not bashing them, I'm bashing you, because you're an asshole. If I've offended anyone but you, I apologize, most sincerely. And I really do apologize for being part of this forum sinking to depths not seen since DT. But you are really an incredible douchebag. God, I hope you never own a nice boat, because you simply don't deserve it.

Gee, about 10 or 15 posts back I was one of the only ones left giving you any benfit of the doubt, but you just can't stand that, you have to burn every f'n bridge. So fuck off. Really, fuck off asshole. I tried, I really did, but one of the advantages of getting older is that I no longer have to treat an asshole like you as someone worthy of respect.

Again, I sincerely apologize, to everyone but Reis, to whom no apology is owed or intended.

Now, please leave Cruising Anarchy in peace. We were quite happy without you before, we'll be happy without you again. PM me your particulars and I'll be happy to send you a nearly full tube of Barient winch grease, at least 20 years old but still nearly full.

Lovin the poetry.......

young Reis was the subject of Haiku
fairly soon he did turn to Sepuku
I myself love a game of Sudoku
the problem was solved with a pool que
Rebecca meanwhile was left at the dock
cause poor Reis it turns out is a bit of a cock

Awesome CL. Love a good rant.
No offence.

BTW, we are all pinging Reis' posts aren't we?
He keeps playing deletes.
Happily his apology is preserved for posterity, but the original has been deleted.

Did he have a case of the deleties or did the mod's remove him? Hard to tell.

Either way, It has improved the value of this thread, (boat) porn of no (boat) porn.

BTW Beau, I still belive there are two types of internet users: Those that admit to looking at porn and thoses that lie about it. ;)

I tend to lie about it, depending who I'm talking to. Thankfully my wife understands so we talk honestly. She likes it too.

PS Dutchy I have been meaning to say, I DO love the 2 legged Hefelant.

There once was a charlatan named reis,
whose posts came and went like the breeze,
Reis shut the fuck up,
seems to sum it all up,
just leave us forever if you please.

The cruising forum was started
When DT showed up I departed
I'm not sure if Reis like DT is sane
So once again I may do the same

I'm fairly convinced now that reis is not DT. DT would be oblivious to such douchebaggery. Plus, reis hasn't claimed to be expert at anything. He's more like Mighetto's evil twin. I'd be surprised if we see much more of reis any time soon. Last time he was here and the douchieness started, his departure was precluded by massive deleties.

If the new warning points had a limit...and once that limit was reached, their IP address was denied access for a considerable time...

....and each time access was denied,a longer probationary period would be set...that IMO would be a good feature.

Edit:I'm not as certain as you that DT and Reis aren't the same....twisted individuals like that are quite cunning....what leads me to suspect: is his barbs thrown at Bob,and now his barbs thrown at CL the only support he had left....did CL trip up DT on some of his delusional fabrications.

There once was an aspiring owner
Of a beautiful boat, you've all known her
Her bussle was broad
And though some saw a fraud
In her suitor who claimed he would own her

The crew of our own sailing anarchy
Were rushing about rather crankily
There was much debate
Of the number she'd rate
But they discussed it rather haphazardly

"In good time this too will all pass"
Said a member well known for his gas
We'll drag up the anchor
And discard this rancor
An show this fine harbor our ass

"Have we learned any thing about life?"
Asked the deckhand who shaved with a knife
"Will we see this again?"
"Amongst ladies and men?"
"Or will deletion save us from strife?"

The Curmudgeon shouted "Bugger off!"
For even when he was aloft
The stench of the words
In this forum, like turds,
Lay 'bout the deck all brown and soft

Like all entertainment at sea
The postings in here can not be
Hidden from view
Deleted anew
They always will long to be free

So the crew having decided on posts
'Bout the offending member's, he roasts
But who can he be?
This offender we see
As the posters and rosters are ghosts

Amongst the crew, among all of us
There are those who say this is small of us
To maline a fine man
Or even to ban
His phrases and posts is banal of us

But chaos aboard will still reign
As the crew will seek to restrain
The best of the lines
That all feel defines
The worst that some posts can retain

This poem has run on far too long
The reader's attention is drawn
To the forcing of rhyme
And the long waste of time
That is reading CA every dawn

With this last line I'll now say "Adieu"
We satirically say "Nice knowing you"
There's little as fun
As a post that has run
From insult to poem - Sacrebleu!
