The other problem here is that if a boat protests on Sunday then it is likely that the defending boat will not be at the Yacht Club to defend themselves. It's just a little shabby to protest over something that really wouldn't otherwise change the outcome of the race.
Just my 2 cents worth.

We saw Time Bandit go back and clear, as well as several other boats. Ace had such an amazing start that they were far out of hailing range when they went inside - maybe a 1/4 mile out in front of everybody. Ultimately, being the very good sports that they are, they retired after finishing.
I suspect that Freebyrd may have had the same issue. With the wind angle and the start line, it was very easy to straight line it to Turn Pt. and be inside the buoy.

On a race like this I'm of the opinion that if (for example) a port boat misjudges a passing by a little bit the starboard boat should just duck them and say "you owe me one". What goes around comes around. On the other hand if somebody pulls a flag the penalty is just two turns and on a 75 mile race it's most likely insignificant so just SFU and do the turns. There is no need to prove a point.

My Picks to Win 2012:
(Have to weather guess to do this: sorry, but we're due for light and fluky)
Dragonfly, Overall and Multi class
Freebyrd, X
Madrona, O
Ptolemy, I (local knowledge pick)
Madame Pele, II (Muffin, Black Boat never to be taken lightly but...)
Blackfoot, III
If it is big air, things change.
Anyone else care to stir the pot?
Pretty good picks! 3-for-6 would land you an everyday spot in the Mariners lineup.
November in the San Juans...another great weekend of racing, wind, sun, soda-pops, and friends! Close racing in almost every class with plenty of lead changes both days. Thanks again to the OIYC and RC!

That goes for Large boats overtaking smaller ones. Please go to leeward or tack away if you're too close. Westerly passed too close to weather of us along the Canadian shore. I had to alter course to leeward to avoid a situation that could have been deadly. I didn't Protest but should have. Just a note for all you big guys, you cast a big wind shadow when passing to windward. As close as Westerly was, if I hadn't altered course their sails would have made contact with the top of my mast. At the speed they were going, both boats would have been in jeapordy. Ripped up sails, dismasting and a collision were all possibilities at the time.On a race like this I'm of the opinion that if (for example) a port boat misjudges a passing by a little bit the starboard boat should just duck them and say "you owe me one". I'm not sure what you mean by that but it sounds like a cheep shot. The reason boats went to the pin was not because it was further down wind than the committee boat but because there was more pressure there with the wind flowing out of Spieden Channel. If the classic strategy were to be used (in a down wind start go to the end of the line furthest down wind) then all the boats would have been at the committee boat.

The pin was quite a bit closer to Turn Point than the boat. Didn't mean it as a cheap shot.

The Pin was hugely favored, it should have been pulled back about 250yds toward Roche to be square to the next mark in the course, not the wind. but it's what they chose to do so we all piled up at the pin.

It wouldn't have mattered if the line was square, the wind was at the pin and those down the line got parked. The Pin was hugely favored, it should have been pulled back about 250yds toward Roche to be square to the next mark in the course, not the wind. but it's what they chose to do so we all piled up at the pin.

I don't know about that "got parked". We were half way down the line at the gun, set the asym and reached up hard behind the clusterfuck, dipped around the pin, up over some over-earlies and were second boat to the Danger Shoal buoy. Not that we planned it that way.
Of course it would matter. The start would have been much more fair for more boats with a line square to the course.
Great great race though. Thanks much to OIYC and Bob and Betsy and all.

That was me on the F27 Tri Impulse on Sunday! We didn't protest but I did yell at them. But they bought us beers Sunday night at the club so all good in the hood. We were really laughing about it all when it was happening. That was one cluster of a start! Being wedged up against a SC 70 we thought we were going to get squished. Total chaos, total fun.

Hey I was there for the whole 50 fast fleet on DB. Before that I sailed against OOze at the Gann Cup, 2 ton fleet, Swiftsure, WIRW etc, etc.I know all the stories as most of the time I was right there. Scary part is they were true. You can't make up shit like that - normal people wouldn't believe it.
I was being facetious. I'm a canuck; we do that. Eh. I haven't done RTC as I was deported in 1999.
Yup - I know Bcam too.

OZ was my first "big boat" I did fordeck on, believe it or not some good/silly times were had aboard.....unfortunately there were those "moments" that would overshadow them (screamimg at a Canadian boat we/they were crossing lanes with in very slow going conditions just prior to the finish line is probably a good example).
