Deep Water. Absolutely needs to be on the list.
And Caddyshack should get at least an honorable mention.

Captain Ron & Pirates of the Carribean (for the story, not the OTW footage per se)
I've seen most of the rest mentioned earlier, IMO there are only four good sailing movies so far...with good being a movie I'd watch more than once.

This is a very dated movie and probably too wholesome for the crowd at SA but I remember my parents taking me to see this movie when it came out and as a southern Californian teenager it was very inspiring.
The movie is 100% sailing.

What other movie gets more mentions here? And is quoted all over?
Not that it is the best made. Sorry to say it was the first movie date my wife and I went to. We're still together so it must not have been all bad............
The documentaries on the Johsons and the various boats that they sailed all over the place are great, but I am not sure you call them 'movies'. Same for the Chichester doc's also.

Could never get into the Matrix for the same reason. Opening sequence was filmed outside my old flat in Sydney, but when he turns to his left he is in a different suburb.
For that reason my favourite film on a boat is the chicky making French toast.

DEAR,MR CLEAN the sailing sequences in Dove, sailing in high winds with those shity dacron sails make this movie number one. Anybody who can sail a Ranger 23 3knot shit box around the world is a true mad genius. It certainly had an effect on me reading about it and then seeing it as a kid. If you have ever sailed one of these boats I think you would agree.
+1
However, the actual Dove was a 24 foot Lapworth, subsequently replaced by a 33 foot Allied Luders The movie was made in 1974 and looks it. However, there is real sailing and most of it was shot on location. http://en.wikipedia....ove_(1974_film)
