This one's easy: It's never been done before in any sailing publication, so we're doing it. What are your votes for the Top Ten?

My quick picks:

Captain Ron
Wind
Thomas Crowne
Dead Calm
Masquerade
50 First Dates
Master and Commander
Morning Light

I'm not honestly suggesting this is the top 10 of anything, but it does have sailboat racing as an integral part.

Wind & Morning Light (for the OTW footage, not the story)
Captain Ron & Pirates of the Carribean (for the story, not the OTW footage per se)

I've seen most of the rest mentioned earlier, IMO there are only four good sailing movies so far...with good being a movie I'd watch more than once.

It took forever to find a clip of "The Dove" but I finally found one:
http://www.francetud.../?v=XpU_7JHV-1g

This is a very dated movie and probably too wholesome for the crowd at SA but I remember my parents taking me to see this movie when it came out and as a southern Californian teenager it was very inspiring.

The movie is 100% sailing.

What other movie gets more mentions here? And is quoted all over?

Not that it is the best made. Sorry to say it was the first movie date my wife and I went to. We're still together so it must not have been all bad............

The documentaries on the Johsons and the various boats that they sailed all over the place are great, but I am not sure you call them 'movies'. Same for the Chichester doc's also.

Anyone remember that very rough script that someone wrote up about a new "Wind" with an actual storyline and lots of sailing?

It's kickin around somewhere, but it sounded like it would make a great script.

DEAR,MR CLEAN the sailing sequences in Dove, sailing in high winds with those shity dacron sails make this movie number one. Anybody who can sail a Ranger 23 3knot shit box around the world is a true mad genius. It certainly had an effect on me reading about it and then seeing it as a kid. If you have ever sailed one of these boats I think you would agree.

I don't see how there can be any debate on this, Wind is the best sailing movie of all time. The list is Wind and then 9 others.

I hate most movies with sailing or climbing, one continuity mistake and I lose all buy in to the fantasy.
Could never get into the Matrix for the same reason. Opening sequence was filmed outside my old flat in Sydney, but when he turns to his left he is in a different suburb.
For that reason my favourite film on a boat is the chicky making French toast.

+1

However, the actual Dove was a 24 foot Lapworth, subsequently replaced by a 33 foot Allied Luders The movie was made in 1974 and looks it. However, there is real sailing and most of it was shot on location. http://en.wikipedia....ove_(1974_film)

Morning Light
Wind
Masquerade
Perfect Storm
Summer Rental
Captain Ron
Charlie St. Cloud
Message in a Bottle
Dead Calm
Sailing (old Warren Miller flick)

Wow, about time soneone mentions Warren Miller... maybe old has something to do with it.

Cheers, Win ever.

If you include "Morning Light" in the list, you have to add "Drum" first.
