The Holder 20. I fink its freaky and I like it a lot. Can't find one though. What else is out there that is trailerable, fast, has a cabin, looks cool, and can be had for under $4K? Nobody better say, "Ozark whitetrash chick" I'm serious.

Nothing else in that price range; maybe the MX-20 but there weren't many of those made. All the ~20ft-ish boats are much much slower.

A possibility if you want to do some experimenting: get a Highlander. They are quick (faster than the Holder 20) and very strongly built. I happen to like their looks too but they are certainly not modern or sleek.

Not quite as fast, but look at the Santana 20, also sometimes called the Tuna 20. Good class support, some one design fleets across the country. Fun little boat with as much room as the Holder 20, the biggest problem is the full keel but once you get used to it it isn't a big deal.

Hot foot was the idea for the U20. Jim added more shape to the bow knuckle - changed the back end a little and reworked the interior and cabin top. The keel and rudder were all redesigned also.

I like the the Holder 20 great lake boat. However you need to keep the cabin closed up when conditions get a little windy given spinnaker up wipeouts are well known for sinking them. Positive flotation keeps em off the bottom but I've seen a few that had to be recovered off the bottom. Super fun boat in light air moves really well.

Santana 20's are tough boats and also have really good fleets in many cases.

you would be suprised how quick a tuna can be in less than 12 and flat water!

You Want Freaky??

There's a Lindenberg 22 somewhere in Oklahoma thats up for sale. (According to L22 Yahoo Groups)
1"-1 1/2" feet longer than anything mentioned above, but you'll get around the bouys a whole lot faster. (196-198 PHRF)
It's easily trailerable (you can actually beach it), has a very large cabin for a 22', looks way cool (even freaky, depending on your taste in trailerable 30+ year old sail boats), fast and can definately be had for less than $4K.

My hometown is the S20's hometown, and I'll vouch for it. At current prices for boats, sails, etc., they're cheaper to race than a lot of dinghies.

Downside is the keel doesn't retract like the H20's, which makes for a tall trailer, a bigger vehicle to pull it, and a deep ramp or a crane to launch it. SoCal YCs have cranes so it wasn't an issue there.

Tunas are fun, been racing them OD for the last 14 yrs, but look at your class breaks. 222 is easy to sail to in flat stuff, but if everyone arround rates 170 you are gonna get waterlined to death. Fun boat, great people, but if I was in bigger h20 than in CO I would defenetly go for something a bit bigger. Obviously if there is a OD fleet go for it, but PHRF not so much.

The Impulse has about the same amount of cabin as the Tuna and the Holder. That is, hardly any at all. My Impulse has the inboard shrouds which makes the cabin almost impossible, but it's still room for a cooler and some jackets at least. Fun boat too.

Second the notion that the Impulse 21 is ONLY a daysailer. I've had one for 5 years, and enjoy it greatly for evening racing and instruction - it sails and responds very well to adjustment - but I've only crawled below decks perhaps a half-dozen times - it's NOT a dual purpose design at all.

Have a Holder 20 in a nearby marina, sure wish he'd sail it more often, I'd love to see how the two compare - I'd bet I'm faster uphill, slower down.
