You guys that went West are looking to be in good shape. When the servers come back up I'll be raging at the wind as I try to figure out how to keep up as you go flying by to the West. It seemed like a half-assed plan to begin with and I'm starting to see why. Fun to learn the hard way when it doesn't really cost you anything. I need to look at the bigger picture as a couple others have wisely pointed out.

Is the game weather based on real NOAA forecasts (gribs)?

Well I went west and was making big gains and then when the wind shift came in I haven't been able to tack with the server overeloaded or something and am parked! About the throw in the towel...

Same Shit Different Virtual Race - they take (for some) our money, advertisers money, and player sign ups but don't create the infrastructure to support the game/advertising platform so it crashes. Happens every time.

Shame on me for still coming back to it. I'll need to think up a different way to win a bottle of rum off my friends.

280,000 boats this early is interesting. Just looked at the chart before the crash; thats a lot a gates, the South Atlantic one will change my TCZ approach .

This is the second time in this race that the servers have gone down just when it was time to make a course change. The first time was right at Finistere and I got hosed. This time it happened right at the bottom of the low. I made a tack and the game froze. fifteen minutes later it came back up fpr a few minutes. I was stil on my old heading. So, I tacked again. I think it took because the next update showed the new course. But, until the servers come back up I won't know if I'm stuck in irons or not.

Hi all! I was looking in the sailing forum for the Vendee game info. Glad to find the thread here. The system crashed right at the wind change. My course change should have taken effect at the wind update. 1400 EDT. stanlutz is the boat name. Was west just below the system and am ready to charge south. #$@%$# system maintenance. I hope this is isn't something regular.

Or put another way Cheep fuckers do no give a shit. Never could write clean code, never will.

The last V Vendee the start was a blast BIG Crash but I came out of it great got down to #14.. Made me spend for pro options. If I had money in this game now I'd be Pissed!!

I think or look at these outages as opportunities , V squalls set up ahead of time and KICK ASS as the noobs park up.

Ah nothing really this time, the 12 hr ball and looking at zezo for long range weather. If he gets this game in sail.zezo.org is my main one. I have started to think like his program max wind, a great angle, always going for new max wind, Max CMG up to 8 days out.

In irons now for a couple of hours and I was in just the right spot to consolodate my hard earned gains by going west. I noticed the wind change and re-adjusted my course and clicked to validate the change and everything locked up. Just tried another browser but no joy there either.

I'm not getting on. I can only hope that my boat is at least still moving. I'd be happy with any speed at the moment but probably in irons. In which case I guess I should use the opportunity to carry out some minor tweaks to my running gear...

Check a ways up in the thread. There is a client tool you can use. I tried it but gave up. The configuration/settings are a bit much and the Wiki didn't help a lot. YMMV.

Well, I've returned from about an 8 year hiatus, and it's sort of comforting to find the same old glitches. I do try to update just prior to a clock tick but what always lurks on the other side is a whole new wind grid.

It would be nice if they'd post a schedule for when a new grib is to be implemented. That way, the usual window of maybe 36 hours could be measured from a realistic start point.

It's a long race, at least they do not seem to have the random disasters any more so the only fickle finger apart from wind, are these server crashes.

So FAiRaWAYwhat French sites do the virtual vendee folks use talk about this game.

Why would they not have problems with trans world servers AND in-country close to the game base NEVER go down. I used it last game a tol. Just never got to thinking it would go south like this AGAIN.

Some idle speculation...

1) They are waiting for enough players to get so pissed they never come back thus solving their problem
2) They are waiting for the nearest French PC store to open so they can buy more servers
3) It's a database problem and they're reindexing some big ass table or restoring something
4) Someone failed to pay the electrical bill

DTS which I think is a 24hr distance record and a lowest ranking achieved classementrecord24h.

Nope. My scheduled course change didn't happen at 2005 so went slow west for a while rather than fast south - just watched WildThing sail on by!
Managed to head south about 2 hours ago, just went on to check before bedtime to find myself back hard on the wind on windpilot!? This game is unwell.

I bought options (I travel a lot and needed unattended sailing to work) but the only combination I have found to be reliable so far is Autosails with a basic heading set. Waypoints especially have proven unreliable with unexpected changes in heading. The settings below have not failed me so far unlike other combinations. I suspect this company grossly underestimated the popularity of this event but didn't have the sense to lock it down before things imploded. Hope they sort it out.

I must admit I was pretty lucky there... I was already on the right course but should have switched from jib to spin on the wind change; didn't achieve optimum speed but was at least going the right way...

I'm glad I didn't spend money on this game this time around...

added another 20000 while waiting....

now its coming off.

there is nothing they can do to fix it

it's a net plus to the guys who stayed east and were in light air

This game has been running in its present form or similar form for about ten years now. VOR, Velux 5, and Vendee all use it. Although it "Was" two different groups running it (now only one since the many players merger), it is the same basic engine that runs the game core and has seen little if any improvement or development since it first appeared, apart from a few GUI changes which are eye candy and don't affect the game itself. Every edition of every race has had problems with crashes, normally due to insufficient server capacity. Don't expect any miracles soon. Unlike the VOR, this race is only one leg and the payers have already paid. The players can now get stuffed since they now only need to keep their advertisers happy for the next 3 months. As for your setup. Have you used "AutoTWA"? That usually works fine. The problems always seem to arise from using "Waypoints".

From French by Google:

"Updated: 15/10/2012, 10:20 CET:

The race committee will meet today at 13:00 GMT / 14:00 CET to analyze the impact of the disturbance last night on the entire fleet. Decision as a result of this consultation will be announced in the "news" section of the site as soon as possible.

The 14/11/2012, at the site www.virtualregatta.com suffered disruption causing a restriction of access to all the players participating in the Virtual Vendee Globe.

The race committee met tonight at 23:57 CET, 22:57 GMT, November 14, 2012 to study the problem that we have currently on the Virtual Vendee Globe.

It was concluded that, for the moment, no decision will be taken on the rest of the race. However, the committee will meet again when all the elements will come together for a fair decision is taken on all participating players.

The whole team is working to resolve this malfunction, and method therefore to analyze its causes and consequences generated.

Please kindly accept our apologies for the inconvenience.

The VR forums have been put offline since the start of the race, to lighten the load on the servers, they say. It wasn't enough to prevent yet another fuckup yesterday.

Coincidentally, it's also a way to prevent any protest made by the users from being publicly visible.

Edit: Marvin explained it before I did.

Protest committee finding, in summary, is that players who went east with options should keep the advantage gained by the outage, whilst those who went west with no options should have bought options...

Not sure what they could do to be honest, but there it is.

They are HARD core V races connected as a unit through emails & their moto "THE SIGN OF THE TIGER Tigers do not find worth in power or money. They will be completely honest about how they feel and expect the same of you." Im not sure they are in or active in this game. U could try to join.

"The Protest Committee met today to analyse the availability of the game between 20:00 and midnight on November 14. The Committee is composed of Virtual Regatta players and staff members in equal proportion.
The Committee reviewed the following:
  • the time the site was unavailable and its impact
  • the length of the race already run and the time remaining
  • the number of players involved
  • different possible solutions
First, the Committee discussed the possibility of a restart or roll back. It was considered that some players had developed a long-term strategy based on wind forecasts several days in advance. Others had programmed their boats in advance or had changed the course of their boats before 20:00CET / 19:00GMT as a precaution and were not impacted.
Many players had made considerable effort to be in the position they had reached and did not suffer any impact and a restart of the race would undermine these players. Similarly, a rollback, but with real wind data, would also disadvantage those who had worked to a long term strategy based on weather data.
Accordingly, the Committee decided that it would not restart the race.
The Committee then considered compensation for players. The Committee took into consideration that players were disappointed, frustrated or angry. However, the role of the committee is to find a fair solution for the greatest number of players. It has been estimated that the provision of compensation would be unfair to the players already equipped.
In conclusion, the Committee decided that there was no way to offer fair compensation.
Considering all these factors, the committee found that no provision would compensate all participants equally. However it is not normal that no action is taken.
It was therefore decided to recommend to Many Players that a charitable donation is made towards a sea-based charity in recognition of the loyalty of the players."

It is the considered opinion of this player that "Many Players.SA" should make a charitable donation to the good of online game-playing in general by pissing off and finding some other enterprise to fuck-up. They have been a disaster from their initial existence.

LOL Well said!!

On another note seems there is a cut off time for new input before the weather up date. A player missed the pre set and sat. Seems he miss his 57 min lockout time before the update at 59 min. So guess If im up or care I'll try to hit enter at the 55 min point 5 min before the wind up date.

All that driving and distance and Im back with the pack I was following made a little .

The light and iffy ahead looks challenging ? Im thinking about around 25.0000 W TCZ aiming point now, maybe. Seems the 32. W to 35. W usual TCZ transit area is a bit more east I'll be watching that area till iI get down there.

Please add me too.

Upgrade sails, autosails and the thing where you can say shift course after you have had your moules et frite. Euros 19 or thereabouts.

On other stuff, whatever the, understable. whinges, I reckon it's a bit tough ripping at the organanisers to the extent that some have been inclined to do. Shit happens at sea, and shit happens with technology, and getting over it is what we're about.

In saying this,a bit of bias: I will admit that on the first freeze at N Finnisterre, where I'd looked to cut the corner too tight and was therefore heading slight north of west and lost 30 odd NM and dropped 20,000 places during that first freeze, albeit it was only an hour or two, ( but a virgin bear in mind, and these things affect the decision making processes - and other things - at those earliest, nervy beginnings ( although first time in, in another context, perhaps delusionally, in hindsight, I seem to recollect holding on for a long time, but here's not the time for pats on the back on that front )) I thought well I'm fucked ,so let's go desperate. But at the moment subject to the bravado, ignorance and general bollocks below, that's bourne out, but it isn't easy heading 120 degress off the course for what seemed an eternity ( virgin remember ).

Having digressed, thanks swe 727. Stunning.

Out of it I got the following;

Guys down the African coast are fucked, for the next 72 hours.

Guys at 25Nish and 24Wish are semi fucked, for the next 72 hours.

Guys behind the W Africa guys and the 25Nish/24Nish guys are seriosly fucked.

Guys out further west, relatively down the course, and who, in my humble opinion, get further west, will be in great shape - for quite a while.

More generally doldrums entry/exit very important, to state the blindingly obvious, and that's got to be the key strategy decision soon.

This is the first time I've done this or anything colourable.

So here are some other thoughts and questions as a virgin

- It's a bit compelling
- I like the thought that in January, there'll be people and boats I've got familar with and they with me, assuming no rant ( on my part ), and offski
- I'm trying to work the 72 hour wind predictions, but not easy: getting control of the in/out so you can get maximum wind prediction range is not easy
-I'm getting the feel of sails/speed/ wind angles, but not very clean on crossovers between heavy spinnaker and code 0. Thoughts?
Light gennaker not up yet. What wind speeds and angles does it work at?
- I feel lonely ( if I look at the moment on the site the nearest measurable boat is over 100 NM away). I would love the organisers to programme so at each 12 hour update, you have nearest boat, and next the nearest 10NM down the track ( whatever that means but eg within an arc of 10 degrees of where you are headed ). Someone to beat and someone to gun for, and someone, in turn, to gun for you.
- How do the wind forecasts work? Are they predetermined at the start of the race? I could understand an administrator perhaps looking to block guys in front and advantage those behind, and tighten up a race for collective pleasure. But that will also push some guys behind even further back. So I hope they're predetrmind - properly Corinthian. Probably in the rules, but who reads manuals, and wants to confess doing so in any sort of acceptable company?

lonely go get some friends.

In the rankings friend boats near you in the standings. then send them a message "Want a race? "weeds out the slackers.

Wind is real NOAA grib stuff, todays world wide. But only two forecast time runs are used each day, same time every day. Future winds are todays real forecast run for future time which can change before the new wind on the game board is updated.

Two things.

I reckon it's a bit easy ripping at the organanisers to the extent that some have been inclined to do. Shit happens at sea, and shit happens with technology, and other games we have done over time the are Light years ahead...

RW Pauls didn't build barges. They were owners of barges. I presume you are talking about the "Anglia of London" which I thought was turned into a balloon barge during the 2nd world war and rotted. She was the only barge owned by RW Pauls built in Ipswich by Orvis and Fuller in 1898. The only other barges of that company that I know of that are still alive are the "Ena (built Harwich 1906)" and the "Lady Daphne (built Rochester 1923)". I used to sail the "Xylonite (MF Horlock & Sons)" with Tim Ellis when she was moored outside the "Prospect of Whitby" at Wapping Wall. I also have the bargemans bible open in front of me now "Sailing Barges by Frank G G Carr" which gives names, owners, builders, date of build, original callsigns, and company bobs. So stop getting your leaboards in a twist.

You're right, and I've been sloppy, for which apologies.

The Marjorie was, I believe, built in 1902 by Orvis for Pauls.

She's in the Medway much of the time at Hooe, although winter time she often berths at St Kats dock.

She still races, but arguably less successfully since she had a sprit put on her - but more elegant of course, and lots more sails to play with.

By happenchance my better half and I bought a cottage sometime ago from a lady whose father had been, so we were told, the first skipper of the Marjorie, and she, the daughter, was named after her, the barge, and knowing of our connection passed over some of her father's memorabilia of his barge, for us to give to the current owner.

Going to get some kip before I commit more crass errors.

Nice to know the Marjorie is still going strong even if she has now got a bowsprit. She spent quite a bit of time in St Kaths a few years back. Is the Pheonician still around? I first got into barging when old Albert Groom had her in Ipswich way back in the mid 1970,s.
Now. Back to this bloody race.

1) For wind info - predictwind and passageweather.com are very helpful and free tools to study the weather patterns leading up to the next wind update.

2) It's perfectly acceptable to rip on the game developers. They collect money from players and advertisers and in return give both stakeholders a shoddy product that crashed twice over a four day period. Is acceptable? No. Is it acceptable considering the snafus and fubars that occurred during the virtual volvo race 11-12? Absolutely not. These guys have been running this program from several years now and the crashes and screwups continue to happen. What charity are they allegedly giving money too? Have you ever heard of a real protest committee doing that? No. Moreover, this "game" is really a competition. Winner gets a fancy watch. If it turns out that there was favoritism or any sort of malfeasance by the organizers in favor of the eventual winner, that is illegal.

Androids??? what the fuck are "Androids". Are they English through and through (Hoorah for St Harry)? or just another race of foreign wallies intent on upsetting the apple cart? Can't say if they'll accept you old boy, but shandy with rocks in is a bit out of our league. We prefer pink gins or rum'n'cokes I think,,, last time I looked "where's my glasses"?.
Of course SA will accept you. SA accepts all degenerates of the sailing fraternity (but it must be said,,, Girlfriends or wives tits must be shown or you be blackballed without even the courtesy of a rejection slip). I don't look at them myself... only a quick glance to make sure that there are no obvious tricks like false warts under the pubic,,,, AHEM,,,,, mamalian regions and also a quick check that they have not been previously displayed on "Cruising World". Who are reknowned for their degenerate behaviour and lack of humour. Bienvenue, Hello and welcome, Buenos, Whoooo just the fuck are yoooo Jimmy?, and from myself, You Ting'a'ling my ting'a'ling "Don't even think about it Seagoon", I'm walking backwards for Christmas, Acrossss de Irishhhhhh Seaaaaa.

Pay I think, Why you have to pay to advertise someone elses brand is beyond me, but, that is the twisted thinking of the assholes who run this show. Most companies run on "Service provided",,, This one runs on "Fools to be relieved of their cash and credit card balances".

quite stressful to log in... each time it's to lose about 2000 places in one hour

You're telling me. Dropped 15k places over the last 24 hours in a reposition to the west. Wild thing is now looking very sweet in 1500th. Shame as he virtually touched my bows as we split at the canaries! Hope west really is best!

Just curious ... anyone know how the heck some players get the real 'branding' (Hugo Boss, MACIF etc) to appear on their virtual yachts?

Pay I think, Why you have to pay to advertise someone elses brand is beyond me, but, that is the twisted thinking of the assholes who run this show. Most companies run on "Service provided",,, This one runs on "Fools to be relieved of their cash and credit card balances".

when i first started the game i had to choose one of the logo's - it didn't cost anything, and it was before i elected to get any options.

then, i saw a page where i could select my own colors, which i did,, but they didn't stick - and now i can't find a way back to that page.

I went west last time and it paid off... I fully expect to get my ass kicked very soon, although there appears to be some pressure developing along the coast...

I have been to passageweather.com and looked the forecasts. It is difficult to flip flop between the game and the forecasts. and can't zoom out cause the arrows displeasure. Just trying to keep on truckin' south. It is almost a geometry game sailing from square to square. What general degree are people aiming for? Do you really think It would make a difference going way west to catch the winds? kinda like hopscotch...

No kidding. I paid for the package. $30 US and getting a$$ kicked by $0 sailors. The no $ tracks go from cube to cube to cube. Very different from VORG.

Just have two browser windows open. Plus, passage weather is going to be more accurate in the hours leading up to the wind update than the game arrows, which are several hours old. The game arrows at the update are rarely consistent with what the game forecast was 12 hours prior. Take your lat and long from the game, match it up in passageweather and guesstimate from there.

I'm sticking to the inside track for at least another day. I not seeing were West offers enough advantage to make up the difference? It looks like there is going to be a band of light air around 5-4N for all of us to get across. Looking forward to see which strategy pays off in the next couple days and whether those guys hugging the beach are really getting that much out of the effort they must be putting in.

U training wheel guys try the beta a lot of fixes for some "Problems "ch notes

  • Various fixes:
    * waypoints removal
    * sails images badly generated (needs to go back to customization) * display of some boats without sails
    * distances display
    * disabling auto TWA with the waypoints

Thanks DRIFT. I'm riding on the shinny new training wheels. Hoping I don't end up in Brazil. I pretty much had all those problems except distances display. Don't know what that one is about.

"So smelli-virgin-bits ah WTF happened?"

I reckon he was having a quick kip under the staysail without the AIS turned on,,,,,,,,, and hit a fucking trawler.

Wasn't on board. Port/ starboard incident. The Marjorie was hit on her port quarter, 20 or so feet from her stern. I'll say no more on responsibility. Kids were on board, playing down below near the impact point. No harm, but could have been worse by far. To avoid the very real risk of sinking she was immediately sailed onto a bank. Great job done in saving her. She's been very well repaired ( by Rob, who was in the salvage vid ). In my view she's one of the very most pleasing to the eye of all the barges.
Intended end of hijack.

Those guys at the front have got to let go of the coastline soon. They gotta go SW. You guys out W should be able to reel them in a bit when they do.

It's a confusing one this. I bled from 15000th to 130000th up north around Madeira and then clawed back to 22000th until yesterday mprning when I was forced west again and bled back to 170000th. I'm now on 162000 and climbing back slowly. I think that my only hope is for the doldrums to block the front runners and then we'll catch up some. Those Africa hoppers may just squeeze through and pick up the easterlies south of the equator. Unlikely, but if they do they'll leave us for the vultures.
