Billy no Mates SA is looking pretty smart right now. That's the line that looks like it will work in the next couple days. I think I'm too far East and North to get through before the wind dies and I will have to spend what I gained dragging my ass back West to avoid the big hole and bad angles coming to the S. I just don't see how those beach combers can get past the light air patch ahead but they have done it so far so what do I know.

Billy no Mates SA is right up there with those I consider the real leaders. The rankings are meaningless at the moment. There's a widening hole building in front of the Africa coast-huggers which should slow them down considerably, but who knows? I notice none of the real yachts have gone east of Cape Verde (though Acciona might, due to his enforced stop to retrieve main halyard from the top of the mast...).

Check out the map at http://vr-annexe.akr...g12.php?idsat=1 (updated every half hour as far as I can tell) which shows the two main options people are taking at the moment. You can also plot your boat on it for a real sense of where you are in the fleet!

You're telling me mate. I've just been overtaken by a boat that is 566 miles behind me. I suppose the ranking must be correct because he is in theory closer to the finish than I am.

Just found a link to Weather Routing tools here. I know and was a early on using Zezo, never tried Pacotool.

Let the fun begin

Try http://sail.zezo.org...ono/charts.html

Another option is to access Zezo charts through Pacotool

http://www.pacotool.fr/

http://translate.goo...ved=0CDQQ7gEwAA

On the Home page, 'Submit' your Boat Name and User ID (I just put in DRIFTW00D it worked) then click on the ZEZOlink hyperlink on the left hand side of the next page took me to zezo.

Thing is using zezo at this point it says go do something else for the next 5 hrs leave the boat alone.

Guess I will look at paco as it did give me a heading, range, VMG to the first turn. And the zezo link launched the router chart with current position ready to go showing current wind and route..

I like how they keep trumpeting how many new players they are adding...

I think I saw a figure of 380,000 recently.

How about they stop new people from signing up, until they have servers that can handle the numbers they already have?

At least I'm glad I was heading in the good direction this time when the servers went crashing down! South is good, I think. My last ranking is 100.000 but that doesn't mean anything...
Or should I do a new full SA ranking anyway?

that's exactly how it works. I've made up about 70k+ places in the last few days, but that comes to a screeching halt as I need to adjust my strategy for the next few days. psychologically, it's hard to watch yourself keep losing places by the gross each turn as the plan changes, but it will pay off in the long run. I've been watching quite a few people making serious progress recently that will be totally screwed if the weather predictions hold true. that's the consolation. boittom line for me: run my own race and think long term

Cyrille yes - time for a new ranking, I'm sailing as 6times7, but good luck with getting hold of the info at the moment!

Sheesh. 380K users. Really? Now I'm thinking these VR guys are a bit stupid and greedy. How many times do you have to stick your finger in the electrical socket before you figure out it's a bad idea?

I finally bailed out of the easterly route. I just can't see a good way through in the days ahead if the weather forecast holds. I can only figure the others assume that the time they spend going back west will be worse than drifting south for a day or two. Damn hard to go west and ignore that ranking counter. Wish I could turn the freaking thing off.

I've been trying to use the qtVlm tool to see what kind of routing was favored from where I am but I could not figure out how to get it work over a long enough distance. User error I'm sure. Most of the routes I did get to work all seem to favor going west a bit so that's that. Suck it up and pay.

Now get those damn servers back up you ding-dongs and quit letting new users sign on.

The ranking counter is useless at this stage in the race. You really shouldn't be navigating based on whether your ranking is going up or down. Focus your strategy on being first to hook into the southern ocean sled ride!

For those that are new to it and want to have a few answers and perhaps a few laughs read through the thread from the last go round. Who will emerge as the new 'jfr' that will keep virtual track of all the fun?

Heh! I just finished reading the whole thread! Sounds like the game is behaving normally, in a SNAFU sort of way.

And, no, I'm not playing this round - not because I don't want to but only because I've been working too hard and sailing too little, and I really and truly have no time. :(

But it's nice to see so many of the old fun crowd from the last race/thread having a good time once again. Hi everyone! I hope you find a new statistician/scorekeeper for the group. I'd nominate Driftwood but he'd probably send me some flaming PM's... :P

Race on! And don't let the game servers get YOU down when they go down.

Oh, and remember, when sailing down the North Atlantic: "Go WEST, young man!"

I've looked and looked for a way the beach huggers can get through without paying the price but still don't see it. Waiting for the magic. Good things VR doesn't put fishing boats out there.

Could be wrong but I think the new version is just bug fixes. Does your interface say you are using the beta interface down in the lower left? It may be I never noticed before I went to the beta version but I think the option to go back to the Classic one showed up after I opted to use the beta.

yes, it does say I'm using the beta while playing the new version. interestingly enough I noticed the option to play the new version when logging in last time. I never chose the classic version before and changed to the new version based on noticing the option on the last login. perhaps it is just bug fixes, etc. a bit peculiar though, as why would someone want to play a buggier "classic" version?

You and I together. Went west but I don't think far enough and I'm too far back to make the window that's currently opening for the leading western pack. On the plus side, though, I had a glorious sail through Cape Verde this morning. Even took a refreshing dip off the back (tether on, of course).

p.s. I assume, owing to the new message on his sails, that Billy no Mates SA is making a statement...

I'm currently working on the assumption that at this stage 12hrs parked in the doldrums on 23degW waiting for the predicted wind shift is a better option than going another 100nm west in search of an extra 2-3knots, then having to beat back that 100nm after the equator. And both are better than tracking Africa's coast in a vain attempt to look good in the rankings!

perhaps it's better not to be too hasty on that conclusion. I've thought the same thing, as the wind right on the coast is all but gone. yet the leaders are moving along quite nicely with le satcheu (for example) roaring along at 9.7 knots in 5.9 knots of wind. perhaps it pays to get the upgrades

perhaps it's better not to be too hasty on that conclusion. I've thought the same thing, as the wind right on the coast is all but gone. yet the leaders are moving along quite nicely with le satcheu (for example) roaring along at 9.7 knots in 5.9 knots of wind. perhaps it pays to get the upgrades

the boat "Grosolols MST SAV PQ" is 61st and has no extra's which isn't bad going, is doing over 9 knots in 5 knots of wind

Because the new version might have more bugs! It's VR after all!

true, true! to wit, according to VR, I lost zero places since last logging in after changing my strategy, yet my position counter has me down 30k+ spots. yahoo!

good to know! interesting. although I can't say for sure, as I haven't had to sail in winds that low yet, but so far I have not been able to get my boat to sail that much faster than the wind. that's almost double the true wind speed. maybe I'll head for the coast after all just to find out :/

I just applied for SA2012. Regardless of what Groucho Marx said about joining, I'll accept membership. I'm currently ranked 1,912 while hugging the coast of Africa. It worked in the VOR so my fingers are crossed. Hope you westerners hit a hole. BTW, I have all the bells and whistles... I have a life to lead!

oK here now. BUT I HAVE GOT TO FALL OFF NEXT UPDATE OR 0 KTS. SOOO thanks for the warning as it is unstable now abound update time it could DOWN????

Seems the beach hoppers and middle west boats will get through quicker than I'd thought. Keep pushing in the east only one way to tell whos on top!! Go FAST!

Now as I head south will there be a nice wave to ride waiting?? Got to start timing the lows to see IF this game will let us hang on to the lows as they speed east. On first exam it does not look great as the weather is dropping the lows on the next forecast update. Could it be they are just not the monsters that will give maxed out days if riding?

Trying to fill in a sagging eastern flank but it going to take a few hours. By tomorrow morning it looks like the SA team may have a nice arc of boats from the African coast right out to the west all steaming south.

smellibits will cross the Equator in about 10 hours, heading directly for Fernando de Noronha, and then keep on heading due south, methinks, for at least a couple of days.

From what I discern, it looks as though there may be a high forming down the track in about 3 days, and if that emerges, we might get pushed yet further west, but I'll be pleased if I've misread that.

I've had VirtualRegatta News behind for the last 500NM, probably nearer 1000NM, slowly closing up. Good learning curve. Why's the bugger doing that? And then a little later - 'voila monsieur, c'est pourquoi'. Difference now c 20 NM. He's very persistent: unusually so if adopting national stereotypes, unless you're of the gentler sex, which I'm not. Anyway he's aiming straight for my fundament, but I will resist manfully.

The rankings aren't that good right now :) Those of us in the 130Ks are most likely way further ahead right now. All of those hugging the african coast in slower winds are theoretically closer to the first ice gate and therefore ahead in the rankings, yet we're a bit more west and with better wind, we'll soon rise up :)

Well I hope this pays off guys. I've run the latest gribs through 4 different routing programs for the last 2 days now and none of them give me the traditional route south and then east at about 30ºS. I've routed directly to the east cape mark and all routings come up as course 180º for 24 hours from 27.30W then 163-165º for the next 7 days. So,,,, Go east young man,he mutters with fingers, toes, and all loose appendages crossed. Brigand.

The ice gates don't actually have to be crossed, either. They're there to keep people from hugging Antarctica, so they'll be validated so long as you at some time are north of the gate at any point of the gate.

I have just entered the southern hemisphere! Locked in a tense match race with stanlutz, who, despite having invested in a significant re-fit to HB, is clearly visible over my port bow. Looks like a long southward beat is the order of the day, hopefully allowing our mid-western group to bank some of the gains from our upwind position.

Meanwhile, Brigand has decided the party is really where we are, and is heading over to join it, and the African beachcombers appear to have made it through the doldrums remarkably unscathed, and are starting to look dangerous again with the St Helena high completely MIA. They won't be sleeping much, however, spending most of their time setting up for the many tacks which their course will necessitate...

(p.s. It's a real shame arkoweb has been cut - it was fun!)
