As the current owner of one of the ugliest boats still out there I'm enjoying this thread. I have an irrational love for my Cal even though it looks like the bastard child of a gun turret and a Lapworth hull.

They may be ugly, but in the right hands they are winners. Got two of em that race locally, one in the flying sail division and the other in the no-flying sail division. Both regularly place at the top of their respective divisions.

And thats my favorite part of being an ugly boat owner. Waving to the checkbook sailors when I go by. Small and petty? Yes. Entertaining? Hell yes.

A lot of people sneered at the Snapdragon 21 design and said it was butt ugly and a blight on the "civilized yachting" community. The colour of the coachroof was awful but sitting in some of the anchorages or dried out parking spots we visited, it looked just fine !!

(pic of sistership)

I have a little book called "Pocket Cruisers" by J.D. Sleightholme, published in 1963. It's all about how to cruise UK waters in little boats designed by Alan Eckford, John Leather, P&J Frogatt, C. Hughes,Robert Tucker, Jhon Westell, Alan Buchanan, etc. I'm sure the average Anarchist would consider each and every one ugly and unable to sail worth a damn. There are lots of great observations in the book. One of my favorites is that, at night, car headlights on a road around a headland can look like a lighthouse beam.

He is Robert Tucker's Silhouette II. Not everyone uses a powderhorn shear on a 17-footer.

I have to get busy making a fritatta (sp) for my family, who are visiting us soon. Ann is worried because I'm getting some money out of my estate and my brother is trustee and he has to sign some stuff and Ann, insightfully, thinks it will turn into a family shitstorm.

There are sausage patties to form and is cheese to grate.

Normally I read an entire thread before responding but I don't have the time. I do want to say this.

Bob, I love you. I hope to meet you in person soon. You'll love Adele.

Take a deep breath. Think of England. Then have a big cup of HTFU.

I don't think I can un-request a deletion...I'm going to just go carve a hull and think happy thoughts.

I totally get what Gate said in the opening of this thread. There are some ugly fucking boats out there. We all know it. I cringe when I look at some of them.

True story. Working at a fire department in the southside of Chicago years ago, we had drill night and I locked my keys in my car and needed a ride home to get the spare. I asked the Lt for a ride. As we are walking up to the parking lot, I comment on how fucking ugly this Oldsmobile minivan is. I go on and on about it. Still has the sticker in the window. We walk right up to and he unlocks it.

Here is that ugly son of a bitch.

I was hired by S2 to design a 28' center cockpit boat. I did and it looked quite good.
But right after I did the design they got out of the sailboat building business so the design just sits, somewhere. Probably the garage. That's where everything is since the move to the beach.

You never told me that Maestro!

We MUST see a line drawing, and an interior layout. Please! (I want to compare it to my 30' CC)

Here we have Hunter parked next to a Macgreagor. The Hunter is boxier, beamier, and has a shorter stick. The Mac looks almost like a sailboat in comparison.

That would be cool Maestro! I would be very curious on your take on a 28' centercockpit.

OK...lets lay the blame squarely where it should be for this thread...on me.

I don't like the boat in question, but I shouldn't have taken this approach, in fact I shouldn't have taken any approach...perhaps just another route home.

I have requested this thread be removed.

Sorry to all. I usually don't act so callously. (In my defense jackson-Triggs is partly to blame)

Hey Gates,

no need to feel guilty, the thread just developed in a direction that made some people defensive about their pride and joys, no problem about that I hope? Some of the pics that have been posted since then did reveal some, hmm, how to put this diplomatically, 'interesting' designs that made me smile!

Just keep in mind that even the ugliest child has a loving mother, but that humor and a bit of tongue firmly stuck in cheek are perfectly acceptable ways of commenting on them around here...

edit: just check out the Uglyboat Admiration Society Hang Out thread to see how it can be done!

We will most likely keep SevenSundays, until we are old enough to justify a Trawler.

Maybe do The Great Loop, when we retire.

A new level of bizarro with my family. Luckily, no shitstorm, though as Ann said, "we were within epsilon." Adele and my nephews got a kick out of the whole scene.

The fritatta was good. So were the sausage patties. We also had "tollhouse pie" with homemade ice cream.

To me, the definition of an ugly boat is just a boat that stays in the same place. Hereabouts we can sail year around, but I figure 95 out of 100 boats don't leave their pen or mooring from one month to the next. That, people, is ugly. I purchased an IOR 1-tonner to be my cruising boat. Lots of people told me why it couldn't possibly be a cruising boat. It gets cruised (2-up) most weekends and does beercan races on Wednesday evenings. It is beautiful to me.

And the rest of the Galley (stove, sink, etc.) are in the pilot house too. Easy to make a cup of something hot while at the helm. ...and it has a sun roof! ..and its a double ender! It may not be the most beautiful boat on the water but it gets the job done. They are going to have a lot of fun with that boat. They're going to keep it at Harbour de Lute on Campebello Island (they have a cottage on the shore).

That was Hunter's Edge, a failed attempt to out-MacGregor MacGregor, which they have now abandoned. To me, further proof that it's not all that easy to make a bad idea into a winning product. Roger did it, and keeps doing it. Hunter could not, even with a successful model to copy.

Many years ago, we were in a lagoon with only my old cruising boat (which of course I thought was beautiful) and a sloop that was hard-chined, home built, welded up out of scrap steel plate (complete with rust stains), reverse shear, literally a telephone pole for a mast, gavi-wire rigging and a home made companionway hatch that came right out of Das Boot. I remarked to no one in particular that it was about the ugliest boat I'd ever seen.

Then, two kids popped up from down below that were about the age of my two.... then the two kids on the ugly boat swam over to say "hi" to my two and were followed by their parents in the dink. Then I notices ("NOTICED" at a level that got me a punch in the ribs) that the mother of these two adorable kids was breathtakingly, no BREATHTAKINGLY, beautiful in a nice small bikini with all the right bits in all the right places.... and I still have no idea what her husband looked like (just kidding).

We became pretty good friends with the folks from the Ugly Boat and sailed with them for months in the S. Pacific. Every beautiful lagoon we anchored in, there was this homebuilt piece of steel leaking rust into the water. Oh well, one can always look the other way.

After a few months the father of the two great kids from the Ugly Boat with the BEAUTIFUL wife and I were having a beer on the beach on some atoll and he turns to me and says: "You know our boat doesn't look so good from here." "Na," I responded "It's fine." "Well, there are three good things about that boat," he continued "I got to build it from the pieces that were left over after a barge welding job I did, so it didn't cost much of anything. It brought us here safely from Vancouver 'cuz it's bomb-proof strong. But the best thing is it isn't nearly so UGLY when I'm sitting on it looking at your boat!" We both cracked up.

I've lost track of that family, but I learned from one of my kids later that they had sailing the Ugly Boat back to the PNW via Japan and Alaska. The Ugly Boat had taken them places which they would have never seen any other way. I think of them sometimes when I'm sanding varnish..... the Ugly Boat that gets you there is so much more beautiful than the Pretty Boat that keeps you at the dock stroking the varnish.
