Lucky Squirrel Townhome -- Sold yesterday.

Posted Image

This was my beautiful home.

I worked hard for this place. This was my fourth home. It's a product of my desire to have a warm beautiful sanctuary in Seattle; a place full of original art, to display my collection of books (over a thousand volumes) and momentoes of my family and to live with my amazing wife, Kerry.

And now it's sold. We had planned to sell it in 2010 when we bought Brigadoon. The problem was we could not. A combination of incompetent Realtors and a lousy housing market made that impossible. So, Kerry decided that we could make it a vacation rental, so we did. It served us well, paying for new upholstery and sails for Brigadoon, while allowing us to keep the place until a buyer appeared.

Well, one did, about six weeks ago. The deal actually went smooth as a Lake Union summer night on the water; barely a ripple. The new buyer is in the house last night and we no longer owe the bank hundreds of thousands of dollars.

That's Hundreds of Thousands of Dollars.

I will miss this home. I started my marriage to Kerry there. I built the place I always wanted, in Seattle. I filled it with art, music, happiness and love. I will miss this home in a way that I will miss any other. This was my home. I bought with my previous wife, then had to buy it all by myself when my previous marriage ended. I shared it with Kerry. It was beautiful. I will miss it. But...

It's part of the Freedom Project; to reduce out debt, our constraints, our commitments. It's part of enlightenment.

My debt is "enlightened" to tune of hundreds of thousands of dollars, and that gives us freedom. It means that Kerry or I could lose a job tomorrow and the other can still take care of us. It means we are that much close to our goals, and that much more free.

It means I no longer own a home on land. I may never own one again. I have less of a tie to the land. Before, if we had to, if we needed to, we could head back to this lovely town home. Now we cannot. It belongs to someone else.

It really, really means that Brigadoon is our home -- for good.

Oh, we still have some work to do paying off a couple credit cards and Brigadoon, but that's all we owe. That feels good.

So I think I will chime in now and make my presence known. Hi everyone - this is Kerry! :-) Last night was a happy moment in this journey of ours from land to sea. And yes, it was a little bittersweet. (The new owner did say he'd be inviting us over for parties, so that's cool...) But I also feel incredibly accomplished and triumphant - because when we committed to selling this home in March of 2010 - it was with a "no looking back" attitude. And yes, it took us two and half years to get it sold, but man does it feel good to say we did it - we accomplished that goal. In this economy, that's not a small feat. So I'm proud of us and really excited to move forward with the rest of our plans. Thanks for all of the support, encouragement and advice you've given us about Brigadoon and this live we're choosing - it's much appreciated by both of us!

That's probably gonna feel good for a quite a while.

Nice of you to introduce yourself Mrs. B...from what we've heard and read on the blog, it's an equally desired and fullfilling partnership.

Here's to the two of you! May you be walking on air after this enlightening, for a long time....and may the wind keep your sails full forever.

Well Black, Bob thinks you should drink a big cup of HTFU

Granted there were some things that were tough about this but, overall it is exactly in line with our plans and exactly what I wanted to do. There was a lot of HTFU going on as we parted with a lot of things that held importance to us. In that process, though, it put into clarity what is really important. Yes, the house was nice, the art beautiful, the motorcycles 35 years part of my life, and the library cherished but, they were all things. They were just things. Aside from what actual usefulness they have to me, the act of possession isn't that important anymore.

OTOH I have an awsome new crusing ground to explore for a while with a home base for all the boat projects and, sigh, winter layup. Anyone cruising to the Kenai give me a shout!

It can go that way, Bob -- by all means, Kerry, go ahead and fuck off now.

But please, do it in the sense of "fucking off" as in having a damn good time on your own terms, now that you and Donn are that much more free of landly ties :)

I like to fuck off whenever I can get away with it, and all my "ties" often feel a bit limiting in my quest to fuck off as much as possible...

"the act of possession isn't that important anymore" -- that's good stuff there, Donn.

Congratulations on the sale of your (beautiful!) land home, and fair winds to you both in your inspiring quest to be at sea.

And, very well played, Kerry.

What I want is to make it back up there sooner rather than later to fetch it! The weekends keep rolling by though (weekends? months now, I think...), and everytime I think one is going to open up something seems to fill the space... I am headed to Spokane to take my daughter back to school this Sunday, was thinking I might head your way on my way back down and see you Monday, but looks like you're headed to see Sliver then, so I'm guessing you won't be home?
