Pro sailors. Do they out number the regular folk? Gettin silly.
Past silly.
Pro sailors have sucked the fun out of the sport. It's any class that allows skippers to pay crew is one to be avoided. Don't need a rule about it, just common sense. If you like spending your free time getting beaten by people who are paid to be at your vacation, then something is wrong with that picture. Besides, how many paid sailors are also good looking women? Any? So you go to yet another regatta when rich guys bring paid dudes. Not there is anything wrong with that.

It would help your argument if these sailors weren't voting with their wallets and making the M20 one of the most successful boats out there right now.
These guys are down with it; paying the pros, maybe having their kid or wife aboard too. One or two pros ain't too pricey, and most of these guys are downsizers; they are friends with the pros they want to sail with, and have known them for years.
You don't like it, cool - there are classes for you too.

Exactly. I'm glad for classes like this. If people want to pay people to sail with them, that's their choice and it keeps the pro's out of the classes I enjoy.
Sort of like the line about the Farr 40
Class, best amateurs money can buy.

Critics can hurl shit all they want but for once I agree with Clean on this (shiver). Not only have people voted with their wallets - they've are also voting with their time (just as precious for some).
42 boats on the line in December with a shit load of talent (paid or otherwise...). There's only one word for that, folks... Proper. (Say it right, Frenchie! PROPPAHHH!!!)
Here's a question - is there a "trickle down" effect at work here. By that I mean - does the sailing community (i.e. club racing) benefit from folks racing at a high level over the winter? Perhaps instead of saying things like, I hate classes with Pros, etc. ...we look at the ancilliary benefits of people keeping their axe sharp over the "off season" and bring those thrills and skills back to their respective local racing communities to energize and/or inspire others.

It appears the opposite is true for the Melges 20.
Are there any local fleets? How often and how many come out and race?
It seems that the fleet is a good excuse to go down south, sail hard at well organized regattas and then put the boat in storage until the next event.
It is a model that works great for melges, but does not seem to translate to regional action.

I always get lost on the Melges sites for some reason or is it me?
Here's the results in another form that might be able to be refreshed for tomorrow. Sounds light though today:

Nice to see Troll & StFYC positioning themselves for a podium finish.
Fu has come back to earth.
WTF NYYC, goody get your shit together-- losing to 2 canuckers and one of your fellow red-coats?!

PPS- seems like a reasonable compromise would be to allow no more than 1 cat3 sailor on each boat

theEagan clan
Well the Eagan clan of "amateurs" did pretty well as I predicted. It's really nice to see a family ( Father and sons with son driving ) doing well in such a tough fleet. This is what sailing should be about. Congrats to Marcus, Mark and Andrew.
