We were unique in how we helped one another, while being a safe refuge from the vitriol so accepted on SA.
It's time to take back our friendly little corner pub that is CA...ignore the nasty component that is clawing to get in the door, and focus on our CA family.
I'm am guilty of crossing the line lately, and I've made a commitment to myself to always remember why I embraced this group the day I signed on for the first time.
I'm not giving up CA without a fight, and my weapon of choice is the "ignore" setting.

Go up to the top right where your user name is and click on it.(embarrassing but how do I find the ignore button?)
You should get a drop down menu and one choice is "My Settings"
On the left of the page you end up at you will have a number of choices. The 5th one down is "'Ignore' Preferences"
Click on that and you will be able to add users to ignore.
Staff-a-cockus made me want to figure out how to make it work recently.

I have it on good authority the Bob has left CA for the time being...considering who we gained and who we lost, it doesn't look like a great deal for those of us who have learned so much from Bob, and count him as a friend.
Hopefully in time the the problem children will move on and Bob will return.

I think this happens to people here all the time. Sometimes the place is just too much. Backs to Son's bar analogy, hang anywhere too long and something will get to you. Good news is that it passes and most everyone comes back.

CA is still the walled-off garden of SA. Occasionally a few flies hovering over the turds in the other sub-forums drift over here, but I just hear buzzing sounds and ignore it. Hopefully Bob will too, after a break and he'll come back.

I say: Fuck you all!
The sad thing is that the latest generation of idiots don't grasp that this is not a closed shop. Ish, Gate, and many others predate me, I predate Ajax, yet we are all part of the community. Some will periodically storm out, hopefully they will return but life goes on. I've made some great friends here, met a couple in real life, and to me it is a worthwhile place to hang.

Folk having more fun abusing DT that talking about boats and boating. the tone just keeps going down hill. If you don't like what someone says just ignore them and encourage others to do the same. Ie. DON'T FEED THE TROLLS.
Things that should be in GA becoming the norm here. Why? THAT'S WHAT GA IS FOR.
On and on and on about exotic cars. We are a one car family, we choose to have one car to help pay for owning a boat, always makes me feel special when the exotic cars come up again. I get the sailing is a wealthyer sport but come on, harping on about expensive cars in a sailing forum? TAKE IT TO GA.
Guys there is a difference between respecting people and being a groupie.
Shit fights: Don't contribute to them, Dales Thread would have been a non event if folk had just ignored it. Think about that.
How many threads is this on "why isn’t CA about sailing any more.?"
I left a spelling mistake in there, just so It can be found by someone.

Some trolls are not quite there, I find baiting them is quite offensive.
But then I am used to dealing with people with mental illness.
Others are under the influence of recreational substances, as are some regular posters sometimes.
Maybe we need to take a deep breath and just walk away if folks are offensive.
No point forcing them into a corner, and having to defend statements they wish they had not made.

I hadn't noticed so much thread drift, maybe because when it turns to cars, motorcycles, guitars, etc. I tend to lose interest in the thread?
Doesn't seem so different to me, but then I don't go in many of the boat design threads.
No reason for anyone to leave just because the occasional troll jumps over the fence, the fence is only waist high by design.

I'm with you BJ. Lately work has limited my time on the forum but sometimes I participate (or cause) thread drift. Sometimes I ignore it. I gave up on wrestling with trolls as they enjoy it and it just prolongs the hijacking. Some folks have a pretty healthy S/N ratio. Others are all noise and just need to be tuned out.

Nah. The trick to DT was we confined him to one thread. Thus when he wandered about, we ignored or responded in 'his' thread. This both indulged him and contained him. There are a few reasons why this place has gone down hill.

It is the interweb, you aren't going to do anything about the trolls being about. Best you can hope for is to have fun with it and minimize the damage.
One other thing. It isn't always about sailing and doesn't always have to be about sailing. It is about sharing thoughts, ideas and stories with like minded sailors. I have hung around SA for nearly a decade now. In the early days many, including myself kept it to sailing...but that wore thin after a bit. Sure the sailing still rears its head from time to time, but it is the camaraderie that keeps us coming back.
Hey, I hear BJ cut the lines and went sailing finally. Anyone hear from him lately??

Keeping DT in his thread worked out for the most part. Thing with him was he was smart enough to be dangerous. He was always posting something technical that was WRONG but sounded plausible if you had no expertise in that area.
Well, I would disagree with your assessment but will most certainly embrace and reflect upon the opinions posited by others. I couldn't in good conscience KIS, accept your and KDH's refutations of my claims that battery impedance lowers as the cell-chemistry charges, based on your claim of selling batteries for many years. You, and others, were incorrect and I felt compelled to proffer the correct science to bolster my statements. I honestly felt I was doing the forum a service by taking stance against your errant technical contributions to this matter. VMG, ground-planes, antennae, coax selection, coaxial connectors, Honda generators, SSB, AIS, are all topics that could be discussed here, maturely and science-based, and distill to something of value for many sailors.
I did a poor job in my attempts to broach these topics apparently, and I apologize for disruptions to the forum for doing so. I also came to understand that many may not carry the intellectual wherewithal to correctly assess the argument or understand that what they indict as WRONG is not wrong, but that their confutations are an artifact of how limiting their own understanding may be on the topic at hand.

Maybe it’s just me but I can’t understand why people think so highly of their own opinions and constantly believe they have more experience and expertise than anyone else. These people are doing us all a disservice by allowing us to believe that their opinions are facts when in truth they are not. I personally enjoy the intellectual debates where facts are presented and one can draw conclusions as they see fit.
I miss the old days when a person was not protected by anonymity and anything that was said would directly reflect on the person saying it. Gone is the accountability for acting like an ass, hurting someone, acting with malice or just being an overall d-bag.
What is sad is that only about 10 people can spoil this for the rest of us.
I am in no way directing any of these comments at any one individual nor one event. They are simply observations.

Shall I ask how one is oblivious to one you wish to address or will this just lead to more of your trademaker circular speak?
And I doubt Debbie would be so much aware of me as she is to your particular plight and problems. To suggest that she would flip me the bird is just your feelings transposed upon your wife (she is still your wife no?). While I understand why you would do so, in a grasp of hope that it might lend creedence to your feelings, I hardly think it fair to her, of you to use her as you do and have done for so long now.
Anyhow, moving on to more pleasant topics, still own the boat? Any plans to go sailing in the future? Any real sailing accomplishments since we last chatted?

- It's not worth it to engage someone who is here for a 'fight', to prove they are right, or to insult others for fun and profit. They are cowards not requiring any response or attention. They are very unlikely to have the courage of their convictions to act like this in person. The internet feeds a false bravado that makes them feel important and powerful.

I've always like CA as the sensible place in Anarchy where some older wiser blokes hang out. When you learn over time the resumes of some posters here, anyone would think twice about mouthing off.
Some posters think pulling CA apart is part of the whole anarchy thing. Some can't agree to disagree; ie they are always right and must convince others, some swear terribly and they're quants. It can be a bit of a rabble.
I just hope Bob isn't offended

I would be happy with ignore if it truly, 100% ignored people. Instead, we still get to see that annoying 'This post is hidden because you've chosen to ignore it' message. How stupid is that? Don't you think if I've chosen to ignore it, that means I don't want to see anything having to do with it?

Since some trolls take great pleasure in soiling a forum rather than leave it if they don't like it, it would be good to have an "Unlike" function. Anymore than 30 "Unlikes" in a month, and the person is on probation which could be: they have 30 days to clean up their act. Anymore Unlikes in the next month, they're gone. If there are double the number of standard unlikes in the month, they are gone without any probation.
I can see that in a site called Anarchy, that it implies conflict, and perhaps more hit traffic, but there comes a point where the conflict undermines those that host the site too.
This is one of those occasions.

On the whole I agree with you, but when it comes to personal attacks, rather than just idiotic ideas or zero contribution, and driving traffic away from a site, I think there's nothing wrong with exile. It’s inconceivable how some people who seem fairly bright and have progressed to the level where they can feed themselves, wipe their own ass, fuck, raise children, make money, spend time on the web, and sail a bit, are unable to not read a post by someone they think is an idiot.

I KILLED CA
You haven't killed anything, you mental infant. You don't contribute, but that's about the extent of your damage. You consume precious air, water and food, and produce nothing but waste product. You're exactly the 2nd person on my ignore list, which indicates what an unproductive vacuum you've become.

Ajax - words is that The Hole got booted by the Ed, he'll probably come back as some other form of hole, but he so loves the attention and is so arrogant about claiming to have "Killed CA" that it'll be painful for him to have to start all over digging an even bigger hole. I don't think it has dawned on The Hole that being anonymous means that you can be killed instantly and have absolutely no bragging rights. Poor Hole.

Is it possible for the site to flag how many "ignores" a poster has somewhere near the avatar?
That way, if someone already has a bunch of ignores, we can just do the same thing without bothering to read their posts.
Ed, any chance someone could work out a way to do this?

Now I'm headed for the boat so I can I eradicate a TRUE pest from some lockers, MILDEW, and calibrate my new wind instrument before sailing away for the weekend. When I return, I hope there are fewer than ten new threads whining about the irrelevant assholes.

Would someone please add a couple more pics to the Ugly Boat thread? Seems to make my day complete (I actually like most of them)

we are selling our little Catalina 27 and looking for a larger boat.
I'll be in Paris these next few months and then Debbie and I are headed off to Athens, Greece in June for our Summer vacation in Europe, then
back through Italy before returning to our apartment in Paris through August.
we managed to do some brief sailing in Marseille, France this last Summer so we've gotten the bug to do some more sailing in the Greek Isles.
as always, this place is great entertainment and I wish everyone all the best and Peace in the new year.
