Anyone who gives this guy $500 is a fool. Just because it was abandoned, doesn't mean he has the right to sell it. Can you say "theft by conversion?".

And yes, this thing is probably less than fives mile from where I sit. And no, I won't go check it out. It's been popping up on our local CL for some time now and getting the interest it deserves, apparently.

Looking up the bow numbers in the GA boat registration database doesn't help. The boat in the database with those numbers is a 17' Sailfish registered to a guy down on the coast.

Come to think about it, with 65,000 dead boats from the east coast storm, maybe someone finds a damaged hull and buys it from the insurance company and transfers everything off the bad hull onto this good hull. I'd give odds at 1 in 5,000.

It's an Irwin Free Spirit 21, also called the Mini-Ton. Supposed to have 750 lbs of ballast. Anyone know what kind of ballast it is and where it's located? What's scrap lead going for these days?

Edited to add: The ballast is glassed into the bilge...

You can buy one that's actually usable for $2,000 (or less depending on your negotiation skills).

I just went and looked at this boat. It's not a good hull. Hull-deck joint is a mess. Deck is scary.

It's got two Lewmar 2-speed winches on the coachroof that aren't seized. The pulpit looks good. A lot of the deck hardware is gone. The stanchions have either been removed or ripped off, leaving big holes in the deck. The chainplates are gone. The trailer is pretty rusty. Seems like a low potential for profit compared to the work involved, even it one could get it for free.

Don't think that's it, although now that you mention it the bow & cabin look like it. The inside moldings and the transom are all wrong though.

I think it's the Irwin but dunno, it's been a real long time since I've seen one of these. And it's kind of a surprise if an Irwin has lasted this long

I think that's a Rhodes Bantam, not a Windmill. It's sort of a sloop-rigged big sister of the Penguin.

Hull looks in nice shape but but the fittings and the trailer are ???

Potential to be a nice boat but potential is expensive. It's fun to hunt on Craigslist but real deals are actually pretty rare.

I have to keep telling myself not to go get that JY-15. It's too heavy to haul up & down our bulkhead and I can all but Mrs Steam won't like it as much as she did 20+ years ago when we were dating... maybe I should call the guy and ask if he'd like a nice tax deduction...

I think I see a chine on this hull. If so I can;t imagine it being any Rhodes design. Yes, I know the Penguin had chines but not like this.

If the trailer is salvageable, it might not be so bad a deal. (as long you don't have to spend much to disposed of the boat.)

If Essex is still on SA, I recall they found a Viper on Ebay for a couple of K , plunked in a carbon rig, sailed it (it went fast), sold it in the high teens and used the proceeds to buy a new boat. That was a deal.
