Can we have one thread for any actionable intelligence of ac72 movements on the bay?
This includes webcam sightings, base happenings, inside information - or whatever.
Anything that would help those with the time, equipment, and inclination to photo, video, or just go out and watch.
But minimal chatter otherwise(not mentioning names, you know who you are).

Keeping signal / noise ratio high is a big ask i know - silly perhaps. But it will allow folks to sign up for instant notification from this one thread and not be buried.

This could lead to some good collaboration, perhaps some simultaneous video capture from various vantage points to allow for triangulation, etc.

100% agree on this thread. I've had several people (non-SAers) wish for the same. And if this takes off, particularly if it's high signal, I will point my friends to it. Nice idea Surly.

Well that sounds like a bit of a dare, so here you go:
This is from 2/21, last week. Subsequent bear aways that day were the 'aborts'.

i honestly can't believe that there are no webcams in all of SF that have a better view from another angle... ie see if the crane is up, etc. Can someone do a quick paint job and place the OTUSA base and usual course on a map?

Believe it - pier 80 is not exactly a prime target for cams. The Embarcadero thread has several maps of the area.

There are no webcams that can show Pier 80. But there are other webcams besides the St. Francis Yacht Club race cam.

Great thread MrSurly! There have been a few postings elsewhere regarding putting up a webcam somewhere in Marin and/or the East Bay ... to allow some sort of triangulation of course/speed runs over the next few months. Has there been any progress? I had thought of a couple of friends with Bay views that might be willing to "host" a webcam location if there is sufficient interest and of course funding for a high quality steerable webcam. This thread seems a good place to restart.

In the one case, it's probably too far away from the AC course without the aid of a sizable telescope (or at the very least a high powered spotting scope), but I know someone (actually a close relative) who lives high on Mount Tam with a nearly 360 degree view of the Bay ... which includes sweeps from San Rafael all the way through Berkeley, Oakland, SF, Chrissy Field, the deck of the Golden Gate Bridge and clear out to the Farallon Islands. (elevation is about 550 feet i think) If an SA Bay area native with a good telephoto camera (or better yet, an HD high powered webcam) wanted to test that location, I could easily be persuaded to check into the feasibility first myself. Wouldn't it be awesome if we could get something set up by the end of April?

Wherever a new webcam might soon be accommodated, whether semi-permanently at a friends residence or at a temporary spot in southern Marin (or Angel Island somehow perhaps?), I'd hope that MrSurly will have earned the right to have exclusive use of it at certain times. BTW, I've hiked to the top of Angel Island a few times ... and during my hike last fall, I finally noticed there was a small utility connection and possibly a live 110 volt outlet up there (near one lonely little picnic table). I definitely think this electrical outlet must be used for the Christmas tree lights! Anyone hazard a guess as to how it might be used for other purposes ... like an AC Anarchy non-profit temporary webcam? (the weather gets pretty intense up there so I doubt a permanent webcam would even be reliable)

Thinking out loud for a moment ... I wonder if NBC is considering using that spot for one of it's camera angles? But i also wonder when the August and September afternoon breezes are clocking at a steady 20 knots through the Gate, whether it is smoking closer to a steady 30 knots at the top of Angel Island? Anyone know?

All of this enthusiasm for placing an AC-SailingAnarachy webcam is fun to see. It is possible to do, we might consider using Kickstarter to raise the funds.

However, adding to the coverage of the St. Francis Yacht Club Race Cam, is not easy, it is only a mile from the center of the race course. The south slopes of Mt. Tam are 9 miles away, and Treasure Island is three and one-half miles away. These locations aren't feasible. The only place without a webcam that would really add to the coverage is Alcatraz Island.which is 3/4 of a mile from the center of the course and one and one-half miles further west than the StFYC allowing a better view of the west end of the course.

Since Alcatraz is a National Park, it might be hard for SA to put a webcam there, but I'll bet there's a chance that ACEA could pull it off. It would be temporary, and would be a good use of technology to build interest in the Cup. Someone should suggest this to the folks at ACEA.

There is an existing Alcatraz web cam. Probably not in the best position though.

Not controllable and not zoomable. It would be an awesome move if ACEA could get a StFYC-quality webcam on Alcatraz. Since "Alcatraz Cruises" can do it, why not ACEA?

Hey, even if we can't pivot this cam we can do our part for the environment by monitoring to be sure racing isn't interfering with the seals' love lives...

From my desk in the pyramid (with binoculars pointed out towards Richmond): Finally, Oracle is back! Nice to see them foiling along for the better part of a mile or so on a deep reach. Perhaps its really a run, but I will admit it is tough to get used to calling it a 'run' with the main hauled in. Wind looks light though - low 10's maybe.

They rise and fall - pretty steady - but nowhere near the rock-steady ride evident on TNZ. My perception is that it looks like they have less foil in the water than TNZ. Again though, it is pretty light out there.

Wish I understood the fundamental difference between Oracle foiling and TNZ foiling, but TNZ seems to sit firm on their tripod (tending towards equilibrium), and Oracle looks like it is a gymnast on a beam (not in equilibrium).

Here's a simple wind reference for webcam viewers, if Adventure Cat is reefed it's blowing 25. Although new rigging at the start of the season means we might reef a little early until we are sure we have everything tuned.

They just crossed the finish line flying steady on port foil. Portent of things to come? Perhaps its the conditions: light air (10 to 12?) and flat water. But they look quite steady - never seen them so steady.

Flying on port was less rock steady than their last pass flying on starboard foil.

If you're going to use the camera and the boat isn't visible don't start panning wildly. I'd suggest watching for a bit before taking control so you know where the boat is. It's frustrating to know it's behind Fort Mason when someone heads for Sausilito.

Red Bull, Oracle or Artemis AC45?
Hopefully is Artemis.

The full-out foiling I saw was an OR boat today. I guess AR could be out too, did anyone see that?

Do the 72's ever sail on Sunday? I'll be on the bay April 7 and wonder if my chance of seeing them is slim or none.

Slim to None..
They haven't sailed on at least the past 3 consecutive Sundays, you can count them and see the general week-days pattern at here http://noticeboard.a...ascup.com/ac72/

I watched Artemis foiling just off our bow the other day, it looked a little precarious but they were definitely up.

Precarious or not, still a decent effort to foil your '45 on the first day.

^ My thoughts also. Applies whether it was copy and paste from the many recent successful small foiling multis or a more 'intimate form' of help.

It could just be me - but today may have been some sort of breakthrough. Oracle looked fast and stable foiling on port and on starboard. Also, they looked in complete control - with predictable behavior up on the foils. That said - I only had sporadic glimpses so can't claim a complete picture on the day. But from what I saw the team might be going home stoked after their strongest day of foiling ever.

  • SFO is the airport. SF is the city. A small thing, I know, but it does rankle the natives.
  • The easiest place to watch from is the breakwater between St Francis Yacht Club, and GGYC. Other cool places are Torpedo Wharf, and the wharves at Fort Mason. And though it won't be particularly close, the viewing areas at each end of the Golden Gate bridge will make certain you see something if they are out in the north bay at all.

As long as its legal, it doesn't matter HOW they got there just as long as they got there.
Even with such a big leg up from their besties they still have it all to do when you consider how long OR/ETNZ were trialling foils on smaller scale yachts before rolling out their '72s.

I don't think it is a question of whether AR will achieve foiling rather than how well they will achieve it.

In the JT/NO video he says unashamedly that they just took everything they could see and learn from the teams ahead of them - as you would expect.

^GT instead of JT, correcting you only since you do it often. But yes, agreed w both of you, and am surprised AR would send their helm to spend water-time doin recon in NZ; although it could also have been just a convenient oppty timing-wise, him on the way back from OZ or something and Down there anyway.

The Moth foiling photos of LP were also interesting; very unlike NO, full-out foiling could be a new skill for him?

While it could be Giggly Tits that get her such Great aTension from her interviewees, let's give GT another credit: She's very engaging. She's also one helluva sailor, and a Californian, and, and, ... :)

GT will sink in very nicely.

She was the lone female crew in the transpac Disney movie Morningstar several years ago, right? Never did see that, reviews from sailors seemed decent enough. Another credit to her, I'm sure.

Can we have one thread for any actionable intelligence of ac72 movements on the bay?
