One of the biggest benefits of fixed concrete/iron marks: no need to protest if parts of the rig touches the mark

This exact thing happened in Newport Harbor about a year ago, except the boat was around 36-feet.

There was some breeze that day (I forget, but probably around 12 knots) and we spotted this boat earlier motoring around with sails furled. They were flailing about and looked like they might crash into anything at any moment. It looked like the skipper's first time driving any boat, anywhere, ever.

Later we saw them seriously tangled with the day beacon off Bay Island, mast broken, main torn, stuck, unable to get free. Eventually the Harbor Patrol was able to free them. The day beacon is still mangled over a year later.
