well, no one can grizzle about the conditions we had you sail in. Perfect one race....better the next.

The pipeline boys got one back on me and sailed a perfect race #2 sunday and looked very polished. Some great boats amoungst the lot and even the old Bobsled had some classy crewing.

Good to see you all

I saw some Pipeline Boys as well... they were on the excellent point break as we re entered the harbour after a great weekend.

Well done to all who took home the prizes, and to those who put in the effort to make this a great event.

I purchased BobSled as a toy for B to B and Airlie and possibly Pearl Challenge and Bay to Breakers etc. while in Qld for the Winter.

The Spider;s CBH got hammered because of the OS Assies so I decided to get an SMS for her. Will allow us to have much more fun amongst some great boats and great punters.

We don't plan to do any serious SMS campaigning, would have purchased something different for that. . Hopefully we will be able to keep up with the fleet and sail to our rating  once the crew are happy with the Big Kite in 15 knots plus which hopefully will be pretty soon.

Hope to catch up with you in more ways than one at Airlie..

Its called apparent wind angle

yeah, I get that, but that is on pretty tight, Are you that going that fast downwind?

There are a few reasons: (1) the main is in the backwind of a large masthead spinnaker, (2) large masthead spinnakers can give lee helm and keeping the main on hard reduces this problem, (3) the main helps support the mast (this is more important in strong winds).

Next time you're sailing try different amounts of mainsheet: you'll find that it's fastest to have it almost all the way in to the centreline.

The jib is completely different because it can disturb the airflow around the spinnaker. It's usually best to ease it until it starts flapping and then pull it on slightly. This minimizes the interference to the spinnaker without having it cause drag by flogging. The length of the spinnaker pole is a factor here. If it's short then the problem is worse. If it's very long then you may be able to pull the jib on a bit more.

There was about 15knots each day average id say, we hit 12.9 knots on the gps on sunday, and 15.9 sunday on the T7, so there was a bit of air, and some large swells to run down!

The thing is quite quick, even upwind when it went bumping past!

25 boats makes for a great regatta, can be a bit tough finding lanes though when you are at the low rating end of the pack. Would have liked to see them turn the races over a bit quicker on Sunday, getting back to Sydney at 3am makes for a hard day at work monday.

How did the viper go against the fast shaw's moneyshot and peow. On the results you were close in one race but 9 mins behind in another, Was that due to different conditions or just a bad race? How about downwind speed with the frac kite?

In real terms, the best two Shaws were a bit faster upwind but quite a bit quicker downwind, particularly so in gusts when being able to stay in the pressure longer translated to bigger than normal gains. We had very close boat for boat racing with the other Shaws. We are a long way from our potential as yet so I hope to narrow the gap by the next regatta.

Good day not to be sailing in Sydney today!
