Just a note to let you know that I've unliked Sailing Anarchy. The image you posted today was just too much for me. Don't get me wrong. I'm no prude. And I have no problem with sexy images of half-naked pretty people (men and women) in general. I've admired my share of Ryan Gosling photos, or beautiful Playboy spreads. I just don't see what it has to do with sailing.

I realize you probably don't see your actions as sexist or disrespectful to women. You're just posting shit you like and having fun. But when you post images of women's asses alongside images of beautiful sailboats, you're (I think, unintentionally) sending a message that women are just pretty objects - like the boats.

Imagine a 12-year-old girl with aspirations to sail (or race cars). She's looking around at a boating race, or car race, and the women she sees are mostly half-naked ornaments, used to sell products, rather than active participants in the race. This creates an echo chamber that keeps little girls (except the most resolute) from aspiring to be sailors and racers. They are told repeatedly by our culture, from a young age, that they are only welcome as pretty sex objects, not as participants.

I definitely felt that today.

I guess you don't feel like this is your responsibility. And I get that. But I can't support - even in the smallest way - a Facebook feed that sends that message. It's just no fun for me, honestly.

You seem like a cool guy (and I dig your politics, for sure). Hoping we can remain Facebook pals. Just want to be upfront with you about where I stand on this stuff.

Huh, a Tayana cruiser in my marina says they charge $431/hr  to charter.   My boats half as big and half as nice, but for $200/hr you could hire me to sail you around and I'd make drinks, too.

Was the "Unlikable" piece a  "big pimpin'"?

The thing that bothered me is that the writer thinks that boats are just pretty things to look at.... but they are as wrong as they are claiming the site to be.

The ideal boat does look sexy, but it is also strong, capable, well thought out and willing to take part in any adventure - just like the ideal woman.

It's comforting to feel good about one's daughter, but fess up, Dad:  you've never really known what goes on between her ears.  We are in agreement that kids are smart, but they are extremely sensitive to all of the bullsh*t that the world presents.  The issue is not whether your daughter can differentiate between a "a hood ornament and a real woman", but rather how she envisions her place in the world in light of the objectification of her sex.  And ask her what she thinks; don't speak for her.

I like having more people sailing, and I especially like more women sailing, not only because it makes for a better atmosphere round the dinghy park, but because the more women you have in a sports club then the more men you will get there too. So to me female participants in the sport are especially precious.

So a woman who is put off the sport by some dim neanderthal is a far greater loss than said dim neanderthal would be, and I despise dim neanderthals who put women off the sport, because you know what, they make things worse for everyone in every respect...

Editor,

I agree that there are quite a few postings and images that are sophomoric and in poor taste. They have nothing to do with sailing, and frankly are pathetic considering that they come from grown men. At the same, time there are so many postings here that are full of insight and experience. They come from the generous spirit that most sailors have, and that is priceless.

I think most of us come for this, but it is anarchy, and often you have to hold your nose while you look for the good stuff.

I love the line about agreeing with  politics!! Typical. Dems are never, ever truly happy with current status.

I do somewhat agree with her position; More importantly it is well stated and respectful and thoughtful and this Country needs much more of that. Facebook will implode soon anyway.

But she (nor anyone else) hits on the elephant in the room......what about all the young boys that will be drawn into sailing from the hot chicks????

Summer Sailing Class - $ 400.00

Sunglasses, life preserver, new shorts and sunblock - $ 100.00

Seeing a hotty sail right by them,  priceless........

Now lets be clear about this post.  The person was critical of the Sailing Anarchy Facebook page.  This is not a criticism of the Sailinganarchy.com website.  You can not unlike the Sailing Anarchy website. The Sailing Anarchy website has never liked you and never wanted to be your friend. The Sailing Anarchy website is more like a crack supplier with numerous addicts.....it is definitely not your friend!

Facebook has become the hangout for stay at home moms who no longer have Days of our Lives and various other soap operas to watch.   After reading cafemom.com they take their mini

Ipad, snap a few shots of cats, dogs or people and make comments on Facebook.  I have to agree with this stay at home mom or dad that Sailing Anarchy.com has invaded the turf of

stay at home moms and should be given a time out and then sent to their room.

Shame (finger waving at you Mr./Ms. SA Facebook Editor) for posting on such a lame, overhyped, stock depressed, home of your parents site called Facebook.   Just how uncool are you!

Kent H

Former SA Editor "Sailing Anarchy on Myspace"

As for Jim C.  and his band of merry men, I will have you know that the Sailing Anarchy / Myspace reach out to Hottie's program resulted in numerous women posting their pics to the Sailing Anarchy on Myspace site and then posting one time on Sailing Anarchy......Where were you when "Show me your Tits" became the greeting of SA?   All my hard work down the drain....

SCOTW is Sailor Chick Of The Week... if they're not sailors, they don't belong.  Otherwise, you could insert any soft porn you wanted (well, you can anyway - it's your site)... it just diminishes SCOTW for me since I know a number of cool sailing chicks that could be recognized for their sailing skill, rather than their asses.  Having taken SCOTW down this path, I wonder how many sailing women will now feel honored to be SCOTW....

+1

Regardless of how unoffended I might be, if the SCOTW approach is putting young women off sailing, then SA is missing an opportunity to grow the sport, and we men are being deprived dockside, Its not a case of whether or not to HTFU, so much as opening the sailing invitation gates wider.

The equal opportunity inversion of the Ed running pics of skimpily-clad happy male models is something I cant see happening any time soon, but who knows?

With multiple nominations it appears that KU the magnificent or is it KU the great, I can never remember, is the only Nominee for ASSistant Editor of Sailing Anarchy SCOTW.

Sadly no one has seconded anyone else and Bob Perry has better things to do....  REALLY BOB?   Haven't got enough boats in the Sailing Hall of Fame, winning major races or being the official spokesmodel for Vegemite that you can't judge women for a weekly contest?.....your wife reads this right?....I thought so.

So since there has to be a contest I nominate Jim C.  twice.......I can do this because my sock puppet log in seconded Jim C.   As is only fair in this wonderful democracy we should now have an election.   The candidates are welcome to state their positions and post how they will use the position of SA A Ed to inspire the masses.

We tried to entice more women to read SA and it did not work very well.  If you have ideas by all means email the editor@sailinganarchy.com and include what you think should be done and how much time you have to make it happen.

If you simply are a poster pointing out the obvious demographics of the Sailinganarchy.com website....well congratulations on the major discovery that the demographics skew to men.

Here is a better sailing Facebook site and the home of the sailing website whose demographics are skewed to women.

https://www.facebook.com/SailingChix

http://www.sailingchix.org

The most amusing part of the email unliking and unfriending SA on Facebook is the mention of Playboy.  As I remember the demographics of SA were almost the same of the target reader of Playboy!  Funny that it should be mentioned.

Hi Pwood!

Surely you remember the original SCOTW photo that got published in the Stilleto newsletter way back in the day. You know, the naked girl trapezeing in the butt bucket on the New Orleans Stiletto. Not that she could sail, but that photo got us more drinks at the bar in Sarasota when we would come down for the Nationals. I lost track of Colin, that guy was dangerous and the prototype Sailing Anarchist if there was ever one.

Am I the only chick NOT offended? I love to sail. I also love to wear bikinis, heels, and lipstick.

I say if you've got it flaunt it, it's all in good fun. Frankly if I could choose between sailing with a hot chick and a frumpy one it's a no brainer. (as long as the skill is there).

Lastly, if 70% of the sailing demographic are male, it's bad advertising practice and bad business sense to NOT use sexuality as a way to grab attention.

But she was actually sailing, right.

as much as I like girls in panties, SCOTW is for Sailing Girls that are actually sailing.

Sometimes......most of the time scot only cares about generating site traffic.

Now I will go post a new thread about actual high speed sailng that anyone can do. In fact Scot owns one of these but has yet to man up use it.

You dig his politics? Are you fucking kidding me?

You probably don't have a daughter.

A parent should not be telling their child to HTFU.

I do have a grown daughter and she is strong enough to not have to worry about that sort of crap - she always was. Kids are smarter than you apparently think - they can tell the difference between a hood ornament and a real woman.

You know.... my 1st thought on reading the OP was that the writer was correct.  That things like those pics and other stuff on SA DO objectify women.

And then as I thought about it some more and read some of the responses - it occurs to me that it is reality.  Welcome to the real world.  So while I agree that there is objectification of women - unliking a FB page is not going to change that.  What's going to change it is if we teach our daughters that there is a difference between what IS and what should be and to be strong enough to differentiate between the two.

As long as there are women out there who are more than willing to show their ass next to a boat (or car, or airplane), its going to happen.  Trying to protect our daughters from it by shielding them is doing them a disservice.  Better to let them see it and teach them that  they have a choice not to be objectified if they choose not to by being smarter, stronger, more driven, etc.  And IMHO, there is absolutely nothing wrong with strong smart women also being sexy and beautiful.  The two are not mutually exclusive.

So while I respect the FB whiner writer's POV and actions.... what did she expect sailing ANARCHY was going to be?

BTW - Did I mention I hate FB?  HATE IT!  I hope everyone on FB gets a computer virus written by the Chinese military, which blows up the harddrive causing the computer or tablet to catch fire and burns your house down.  And if you don't happen to perish in the flames, I hope all of you get run over by the fire trucks as you're tweeting your banal bullshit about how the flames and smoke make the sunset look more lovely.  FUCK YOU!

The photos we might best use to interest young girls on sailing would be the same photos most of us who read this forum would find annoying to look at, of mighty questionable appropriateness for a site visited by men, and some of us might even label the photos illegal or obscene.

My point is we want tweeners to adopt a lifestyle which includes having a sailing toy and loving to use it, making friends all around where boaters frequent, and enjoying playing the racing game.

Bieber, Timberlake, the Hansons, Zack and Cody are way too old and only uncool adults would think the next generation can be enticed to sail by those has beens of teenie bopper idolism.

We need to put the current crop of Disney kids at junior sailing camp racimg in Optis and making jokes about the kid who is a history buff and makes herself a cotton sail ... But wins over all the kids to make sails from bed sheets and have a retro week of racing.
"Look!! I found some Converse All Star sneakers in Dad's closet to wear instead of hiking boots!!"

That former Scrubs blonde doctor who just moved back on with her parents needs to take her kid to swimming lessons in the winter and Opti classes in the summer.

Mike and Molly's kid needs to be too damn fat for Optis and both parents need to have heart attacks trying to waddle their fat asses in front of their fat lazy offspring's Opti dolly.

Survivor and Big. Brother need to include sailing competitions.

Dancing With TheStars needs Hiking pants over foulies night

Ok I have totally lost it..

Where was I??

Oh yeah

Girls sailing

I think the best thing I can do is build a perfect boat for two fifty to sixty kilo girls

The rest will take care of itself!!

Maybe a Disney show where the girls in my boats challenge the boys on Lasers to a summertime race on Corpus Christi bay.

Photos of girls kicking some boy ass at a sport!!

That"ll do it!!!

Putting aside the question of whether it is offensive or not, is a posting like that on FB going to attract women to sailing? Maybe that isn't the point here, but there are not enough women in sailing. There are many awesome women sailors, but not even close to 50/50 ration to men. Why not reinforce positive role models?

Sorry, I have to comment about all this handwringing about not enough women in sailing and what is needed is more role models.  I don't disagree that role models are nice to have.  But the bestest way to get more women sailing is to TAKE more women sailing.

You can talk about it all you want, but every one of you knows an owner (or is an owner) who won't take women racing because they don't think they are good enough or strong enough.  Well, they're not going to get good at it if they sit on the dock.  I'm tired of all of you moaning about not enough women in the sport, yet I would bet 80-90% of you would choose a guy over a girl for your crew because your perception is you need the strong guys to win.  Stop looking at women as rail meat that is nice to have an extra body on a windy day and make them permanent important members of your crew.  I guarantee you most will work harder than the guys to win.

I am a female sailor and I didn't think twice about this pic. When stuff like this shows up I just roll my eyes and scroll down to the good stuff. Sailing has always been, and will likely continue to be a male dominated sport. Girls in bikinis will always be a distraction, so throw on your favorite one and kick their asses on the course while they're distracted looking at yours ;)

"....  But when you post images of women’s asses alongside images of beautiful sailboats, you’re (I think, unintentionally) sending a message that women are just pretty objects – like the boats."

If boats are "just pretty objects" for you, you got no business on SA anywhere, anytime, anyhow.  That sorta blows any credibility you ever wanted to claim here.

Sure, our boats are objects.  Some of 'em are pretty - others came up short in that department.  But however they look, we sail 'em, we cruise 'em, we go daysailing.  And we work on 'em.  A lot.  And that's what sailing is all about, and ultimately, what SA is all about.

And some of us here on SA are women.  Some of the women play almost as rough as the guys, although they often have a different slant on things than the rest of us, so there's no uniformity in that.  Others ignore stuff they don't like and move on.  But that's the nature of anarchy. Some of the guys here don't go into the rough stuff, either, but it's easy to ignore the things they don't like.  You could try that, too.

No one is forcing you to get into SA on Facebook or anywhere else.  Don't like it?  Just go somewhere else.  What part of the word anarchy didn't you understand?  Didn't you think we are seriously against PC bullshit and prudery?

If you're looking for a tame, polite and bland forum, you can go try Cruisers & Sailing Forums, http://www.cruisersforum.com/ where many of us have been chastised and/or banned.  Seems like your sort of playground: no dodge ball, no hazardous swing sets, no pointing fingers and saying 'bang, bang,' no dirt, no cussin' and no fun.

And for goodness sakes, don't let your daughter on here if you don't want her exposed to the real world.

What's facebook?

It's an internet communications facility where vacuous people post meaningless drivel about every insignificant occurrence in their meaningless lives - "I just put my baby to bed", "I feel like eating a Big Mac".

They are operating under the assumption that someone, somewhere, actually gives a shit.

The only people who DO give a shit are just other brainless drones like themselves.

It is ongoing proof that 1/2 of all the people you meet are below average.

Sheesh! Buncha uptight wanks.

Sheesh! Buncha uptight wanks.

I think I'm in love...no - I'm definitely in love.

You're thinking 3-way, huh??  LOL!

The photo does treat women as sex objects, which is a problem.
“The problem is not the problem; the problem is your attitude about the problem,” said Captain Jack Sparrow.
Anarchy is where each of us uses our own judgements, morals and standards to determine our own behaviour, rather than having a set of rules imposed on us.
It can be argued that in an anarchic society, people would be better behaved as they realise the implications of their actions, and take a higher degree of responsibility for them.
Or not, as sailing anarchy demonstrates.
"The future depends on what you do today," said Ghandi.
Let's choose a future of where we value and promote outstanding women sailors. Sailing Chick of the Week for me was Annalise Murphy, who recently won her division of the Eurosaf Champions Cup, then went out coaching her sister Claudine and ex-training partner Andrea in their 49erFX, before taking flight on a foiling moth.
Notice that I value these great sailing achievements, which are inspiring. This contrasts strongly with the photo of the 3 nameless backsides, where we "have no idea if these babes can sail."
Now you can beat your chest and shout about your right to perve and drool, or you can acknowledge that photo was a mistake and learn from it. The photo as like an accidental gybe that smacked your crew in the back of the head. So, take better notice of which way the wind is blowing and steer a bit more to left in order to improve your performance.

Am I the only chick NOT offended? I love to sail. I also love to wear bikinis, heels, and lipstick.

Those guys are idiots and dinosaurs.  Back when I raced half my crew was women.  We had a lot of fun.

As I pointed out in the strippers thread BJ, half the crew on my Wednesday night Perf ride are gals, and probably one of the most fun crews I've ever been with.  Al very capable and experienced and we usually nail the corners well with little drama or even much conversation required to do it.

The post and feigned offense are laughable. If you don't like it, then don't go on the site. It was fine before you got here and will be better when you and your ilk leave. You are the same people who are offended by the cartoon of an Indian on a high school football helmet. Here is, to use a phrase from one of your favorite movies, an inconvenient truth: women love to be objectified and they love to objectify themselves. Go to the mall- it's filled with women going to stores buying items to objectify themselves like high heels, tight jeans and make up. Count the mirrors in the women's section of Nordstroms (95% of the store and the mall) vs the number of mirrors in the men's section. Go to the magazine rack. For the most part, women buy mags about beauty and women's fashion, not The Wall Street Journal or Astronomy Quarterly.

hey ed, since this is the hot topic, i might as well point out that i only tolerate the constant flow of sexist bullshit because there is no other option.

Anyways, wasn't the point of SCOTW to promote awesome female sailors, not objectify them?  Isn't the whole point to bring to light how many awesome female sailors there are?  Or was it really just to look at hot chicks?  Because, call a spade a spade. If the goal is to promote female sailors, then promote real women who sail.  Some of them are hot, some of them are not. It's about making sailing a more inviting and competitive place for women, not about making them feel like they have to be hot to  be recognized as being great. If you want to look at hot chicks with boats, call it that, because that is a legit desire, but it is different than promoting female sailors.

Back to the constant flow of sexist BS on and beyond the front page - hurrah for unedited forums, hurrah free speech and la te da. Again, I only tolerate it for lack of better options.  i mean, would you go to a page and read posts by guys with pics of bouncing dicks and nuts as their avatars if you had a choice not to?  You're reading a thread about some  legit racing topic, and then all the sudden BOOBS. BOUNCING BOOBS.  Great for the hetro dudes out there, but uncomfortable for me.  But, that's  user/community choice so i get i am a minority who dislikes it, so whatever.

I'd just avoid it if I could but there is no alternative for good news or  commentary, so i keep coming back. It's kind of like asshole sailor guys, you meet them, you can chose not to date them, but you still end up racing with them because they can trim spin for eons.  (and i am not saying all men or sailors are assholes, but you know those dudes i am talking about)

anyways, really i just wanted to point out that is not just one woman who is out there and annoyed, but i got carried away by the excitement.  I get that there are plenty of women who are fine with it all, but I'm not, i'm just not not-okay enough to do anything about it besides whine. Like many of the other women here, i just 'roll my eyes and move on' but it really kind of sucks (for me) that I have to do that, and given an alternative, i would totally defect.

We don't race on Saturdays, But they are mostly all regular, longstanding crew for years, for the boats premier event; Block Island Race Week, which I don't have time off work for, so will have to pass on it. They are every bit as strong; capable and experienced as any of the men for the task at hand.

edit: I know this is an exception to the norm, but very pleasant; others should try it.

Ok, I just wondered why you made a distinction about them sailing on Wednesday nights implying that they don't sail as regular crew in the normal weekend regattas.  THAT is the norm for most places (women on Wed night, normal male dominated crew on Weekends).  Good on your owner if he has regular women crew that are the same regardless of the event.

My introduction of racing Cherubs was of that most of the boats to beat were steered by .. females !

A certain Miss Wilmott knew a thing or two about winning and the gun Cherub "Hushpower" was now in the hands of Iain Murray`s sister Heather, also rather fast. Our course in Middle Harbour overlapped the Balmoral Moth fleet and some female called Vanessa Dudley made for spectacular viewing as she zoomed around hiking off the wings, looking fast and just happened to be the World Moth Champion at the time!

The 2nd yacht i raced aboard  ( Hood Halverson 1/4 tonner) had a young *female crew member, We automatically just treated her as... well crew, all tasks she did were as one would expect.. just fine! She, like me, used the 1/4 ton offshore series that lasted longer than our dingy season to keep sailing, she at Lane Cove and me back to the Squaddy.

If  she was crewing aboard boats from the great red neck SA community, one wonders if this Lass would have given up sailing and sought therapy, or done exactly the same thing ? That is winning the Interdoms ( Worlds) in twelve foot skiffs and being the first and only woman to win a heat of the Grand Prix Sailing 18s, Later to learn naviguessing and having a bit of success in the yachting World !

Over the years it has been the exception, and usually "serious" older owner or two that has not had mixed crews, aboard yachts i have raced aboard.

Interestingly the revival of the most macho racing dingies on the planet, the replica Historical Skiffs, has now had nearly 20 years of female skippers and crews aboard the winning 10s & 18s!!

Viva Co existence!

*Youngish about 17-18 from memory.

(Late)

Absolutely.

Well there is another option, at least for British & Irish sailors, and the odd Aussie also passes by. That is http://www.yachtsand...tive_topics.asp

It's polite, it's moderated and it's as dull as ditch-water. Not just because it lacks bouncing boobs but because it lacks bounce, period. I'm not certain why that is. I think it may be because the no-holds-barred nature of debate here makes those who have something to say think fairly hard before they say it, so the worthwhile content here is actually thoughtful and informative. Whereas on the Y&Y forum, you just cannot tell someone they are a horse's arse and hence they drone on and readers and posters move away.

Of course to get to the worthwhile content here, you have to be willing to filter a lot of dross.

We may be in a temporary golden age here where something like SA can exist. As concerns about cyber-stalking mount and legislators attempt to make ISPs liable for user-generated content, I'm not sure how long unmoderated forums will persist. I'd be happy to be proven wrong on that prediction.

As for the photo in question, if you compare it to images which young women growing up will certainly see, it seems fairly harmless to me.

As long as its not Gator or Woody, we should be fine.
