Is the J24 class responsible for keeping OD racing alive in many areas

The antidote to the J24 death spiral thread.

 

Agree the numbers are declining but it has become affordable for many newbies or folks that don't want to spend a bunch on a new boat/class.

 

Hell, a J24 one design class is even flourishing  and perhaps drawing frustrated participation from ESPO's contentious EBYRA Wednesday night PHRF extravaganza.

 

J24 also multifunctional in that it can race OD and still daysail with a biddy or babe when the occasion arises.

 

Until the US OD sailing scene embraces some sort of a dinghy form tor broad based competition people HAVE to have a keelboat and the J24 is the overwhelmingly popular weapon of choice.

 

Long live the J24, vermiculite, sinkings and all.

We have two one design fleets that normally put 5 or more boats on the line; J-22 and J-24.  The rest are 2's and 3's or PHRF

I grew up sailing in Norfolk, VA.  The J/24 has been the only consistant OD in the area for a long time.  There have been dinghies and other keelboats that have been active as a One Design (HOD, Laser, Sunfish, Sonar, and now the J/70) on and off, but none as active or as consistant as the J/24.  In an area like Hampton Roads, where 99% of regattas are PHRF only, J/24 Fleet 71 has tried hard to maintain a presence, and it looks like the fleet and its activity has grown in recent years!

While the J24 fleets may not be as popular in many areas, the boats that sail in local PHRF races are many times some of the best prepped and sailed boats, and are "benchmarks" for new racers and boats to measure against.  Still a strong class, and the top of the fleets are usually pretty fast.
