I am sorry to have to break the news that "Bedford", my brother, has suffered third degree burns to 30% of his body as a result of trying to remove a flaming pot of oil from his house.  He is currently in Sunnybrook Hospital in Toronto in a medically induced coma while the doctors start the process of healing him and skin grafting.
There are numerous posts on Facebook (search on Richard Mitchele) and his Fiance Hailey Unterman is reporting daily on his progress.  Richard is a fighter and we all hope and pray that he will recover quickly and that we will see him sailing again.
As sailing was his life and the people on SA knew him well I thought it appropriate for you all to know.

Whoa. That's rough.

I hope he can make a full recovery. Seems like Bedford has been on this board forever and, although he and I have never met as far as I can determine, he always struck me as a decent enough bloke whose heart was in it for the betterment of the sport.

Get well fast Bedford!

Positive thoughts out to him while he recovers.

"Bedford" AKA Richard, or Dee as he is known to some, went through the first of many skin grafting operations yesterday. (5+ hours)  The doctors were able to use his own skin for the grafting which is a good sign.  Procedures were done on his legs and arms.  I have not heard how he is doing this morning but the prognosis after the operations was positive.  I understand that they are keeping him under for longer than they originally thought but this is also a good thing as he will not be in pain, or at least conscience of it.
All of us who are close to Richard are amazed at the outpouring of thoughts and prayers that have been coming his way.  His fiancé is remaining strong and as Richard is being looked after by the best trauma team in the world Hailey is the one who needs our support.  She is on Facebook (Hailey Unterman) and let her know that you are a friend of Bedford from Sailing Anarchy.  I know Richard would appreciate it.
Again, on behalf of my family, thank you for your kind words, prayers and support through this time.  We will see him out on the water again.

No..... god..... no....

I did the Halifax race with Bedford this past year... he couldn't have been a nicer, more fun, kind person. We spent most of our time on watch telling dirty canadian jokes (he, being one, had loads) and shooting the shit. When we got to Canada the canadian hospitality showed through and we spent 2 days drinking, telling war stories (his were better) and eating KFC... Truly a one of a kind personality who had an awesome outlook on life and, to boot, was supposed to be getting married soon to a beautiful fiance. Just the other day he was having a great time having fun at Chester Race Week. I can't believe that this has happened to him and he's in my prayers...

Fun memories from the race...

P1010079-L.jpg

Edit: And I took this photo myself.... sorta speaks for itself and the kind of guy Bedford IS.

Terrible news. Burns are never good. Here's hoping for a full recovery.

Of course, if you do happen to come across a combination of pharmaceuticals that...err...render one particularly unsuitable to operate heavy machinery, it would only be anarchist-like to share that information with the community...

Kidding of course....really. Our thoughts are with and feel free to pm me or Ozzie adventure (both have some medical experience with burns) if you think we can be of any help.

  • I have been told that Richard's condition is improving every day.  They are keeping him under so that he will not move and rip or tear the skin grafts that were done a couple of days ago.  He had procedures done to both legs (below the knee) and his left arm and hand and a bit on his right arm.  I will make sure that he hears that the SA members and sailors worldwide know about what happened and are pulling for him to make a speedy recovery.  Hopefully in a few weeks he can access the site and give you updates himself.  Even though there will be physical and visible body damage we are told that he will be fully mobile and that his wounds will not affect his ability to carry on a normal life.
Thank you again for all the support, pictures and prayers, Dee will definitely feel humbled when he reads this thread in the future.

I am happy to report that Richard is slowly being brought out of unconsciousness and this past weekend even tried to open his eyes.  He had another surgery on his left hand today and is suffering a bit of a fever but the prognosis is that he will make a complete recovery, with a few scars to show for it.  I showed his fiancé how to get to this site and she has read and is passing on directly to Richard all of your comments.  I am sure that Richard will be on this forum in no time now and will thank you all personally.  On behalf of my family thank you again for the outpouring of prayers, thoughts and best wishes, I know it made a difference.

Bedford, I went through hand and face burns this spring in a  stove incident so I know exactly how you feel. Follow ALL the rules the doctors and nurses give you about dressing changes and antibiotics. And dont try to "bounce back" too fast, this shit takes time.

Get well fast and completely, see u on the lake.

Richard is now at the St John's Re-hab hospital and is starting the physio and other rehabilitation procedures.  He is walking unassisted, able to move all the fingers on his left hand, and give the nurses a hard time.  Visitors are welcome, but only two at a time and when he is not doing physio.  He has is IPad but the wifi in the hospital is not the greatest and he tries to use the computers in the common room.  He is expected to make a full recovery and will come out better than he went in. (sort of the point isn't it?)  The Wedding has been rescheduled for December and everything else is going well.  Bedford will be back on the water next year!

I once had a serious burn accident but was nothing like an oil burn described here. It was 1977 or so and I had Fiat 128 that was overheating and needed water. I thought the radiator cap would do a 1/4 turn and stop but it didn't. Yes, I'm the idiot at 15yo who thought I could get away with it. My upper body was sprayed with extremly boiling water. Mostly my chest, neck and arm. I had a long sleeve cotton shirt on at the time and quickly took it off. My skin came with it. Now mind you this was only the top layer of skin much like a sunburn so mostly 1st degree and some 2nd degree burns but very much instantly. I felt zero pain and was basically in shock because I felt no pain. I was thinking this should hurt really bad but I didn't feel a thing. I was at a gas station in Dallas and it was 5pm and probably August and it sure as hell didn't have air conditioning. I got back in the car and drove home to my house in traffic all the while stomping the floor as the pain came on and on. Nobody was home when I got there and all I could do was get in a cold water bath and try to make phone calls. Amazing how we survived without a cell phone. Finally my sister showed up and took me to the hospital where they immediately gave 2 shots of morphine. The pain was the most unbearable thing I have ever experienced and the morphine just made it fade away. I came home that night and was in zero pain and very hungry. I got a triple at Wendy's and an order of fries. A few months later my parents moved from that house and when we moved the bed, we found the order of fries. I never ate them and was probably hiding them from an imaginary unicorn. The other thing I remember is the cream I used to heal the skin had silver in it and it worked very well. I had little scaring. I'm sure today's technology is way better and I really wish the best for Richard!! Hopefully it gets better every day!! I can't imagine the his ordeal at all but mine was most painful thing ever!

Amazing shit.  Richard sends his heartfelt thanks. "If you can send good Karma through the web, the SA community did it."

Here's the story from Bedford's lady, France.

The incident happened in early September when a fire started in our home. Richard quickly took charge of the situation and instructed his friend to ensure that everyone was safely out of the building while he fought the fire bare handed. Everyone, including pets, emerged unscathed but sadly, Richard had sustained significant injuries by the time he exited our home.

Fortunately, through Richard's training as a rescue diver and emergency medic first responder, he knew how to save himself. He had the fire department hose him down with cold water until the ambulance arrived. That, and the physical condition that Richard is in is accredited with his being with us today. Richard was taken to Sunnybrook Medical Centre, which is among the best burn facilities in North America. There, he was placed on a respirator and put into an induced coma for the next twelve days while he underwent a series of painful skin graft surgeries. We waited with baited breath and watched Richard around the clock hoping that he'd stay with us. Two days into the ordeal, Richard developed pneumonia further complicating an already grave situation. It was touch and go for a while and, on several occasions, we feared we would lose him.

If you've ever seen Richard on the bow, you are aware of the kind of fighter we're dealing with here. Richard defied all the odds, surprised many medical professionals and, just five days after emerging from the coma, Richard walked out of the intensive care unit. He is now convalescing in a rehab facility where he will be for the next month as he works to regain his strength and coordination. It's going to be a long road back to complete health but, as I'm sure you know, we have a pretty tough cookie on our hands.

We fully expect him to defy the odds again.

Bedford (Richard) is the author of the Foredeck Union Rant.  As such DryUV will be sending him UPF 50+ long sleeve shirts, hoodies and leggings (Doctor's orders) to better protect him from the sun while he recovers. We strongly believe in supporting those who have supported us and he is simply a great guy.
