Admittedly we aren’t sail designers, but is this asso on the new VOR 65 a bit strange looking?Tell us what you think!

I zoomed it and don't see the furling drum. It's honking big, and would droop in the water in lighter air..

Not a zero. Made of nylon (ish), for one thing.

On a ck boat like this, it's probably what a masthead A2ish/light runner looks like?

yes, the asso is odd looking, the rest of the boat is pretty sweet, though the reversed bow is really ugly, no other word for that!

Given the remarkably small number of sails they are allowed to carry, it is perhaps not too surprising that they are trying to make them do multiple duties, and the final shapes might be a bit odd.

(a ) A J4 shall always be carried on board.
(b ) Additionally, not more than one mainsail, one J-1, one J-2, one J-3, one A-3 gennaker, one FR-0 and one MH-0 shall be carried aboard.

All the foresails may be furled.

Aspect Ratio of 1.6-1.7.. AWA of 85-115.. looks like a Loose Luff Nylon A1.

As much as people think things look weird. All the usual sail design physics apply. The didn't re-design aerodynamics at the same time as the VOR rule.

Code 0 on a furler. Probably quite powerful, looks like a good wave could quickly make it four feet smaller on the foot though. Have fun furling that beast in a breeze that's come up.

Definitely the A3.... though since it's the closest thing they have to a runner it looks ugly because it's an A3 designed to go as deep as possible.

The sail looks like a useful tool.

What looks weird is the 7.5-degree bend half-way up the leech:

volvo_65_leech_bend.jpg

and the crease/wrinkle extending from the leech to the luff:

volvo_65_crease_wrinkle.jpg

Although it isn't evident in the photo, both conditions might be caused by strapping the sail too tightly around a shroud or spreader tip.

Gotta make that mid-girth measurement somehow.
