So I was surfing Youtube seeing if there were videos from anyone else manly enough to sail their boats in Seattle last Saturday (40kn gusting to 50), and I came across this. Holy crap, ever seen an Opti leave a wake like that?

That's cool. Not often you get to see, "extreme", and, "opti", in the same sentence.

But you should really see some of the top opti sailors work their boats downwind in a breeze with a big swell. Very impressive.

Do you have another link to it, on another site or another youtube page?

I was at Shilshole that morning waiting to race (race was cancelled, for good reason). We were watching the reads off the West Point Buoy. 'twas indeed reporting 40's gusting into the 50's. We chickened out, sort of, and sailed on Lake Union instead. Not sure what time this video was taken, I'm guessing later in the afternoon when things simmered down a little.

I'll  buy that. It just looks to be a bit flat for it to be blowing that hard.

actually since the melges 32 incident the opti's have put Italy on the PNG list :)

On a related note I was talking to star sailor last summer who was down in Miami a few years ago and it was apparently too windy for stars and some other classes, but the opti's still went out.  those kids can really rock those boats.

I'd just like to give props to Owen for delivering an awesome video that got the credit it deserved! Also on behalf the team I would like to thank coach Cameron Hoard who is great for letting us go out and practice in these gnarly conditions... even when we break stuff

If you ever get a chance to see a USODA Team Trials, US National Team Practice or IODA event you should check it out.  Everyone PooPoo's the Optimist but the fundamentals these kids have fine-tuned is phenomenal.  They are really to the point where the boat handling and straight line speed is innate and they're actually able to keep their heads out the boat and manage a racecourse.

This high wind business is actually a real feature of Optis. My first sailing was at RVYC at about age 11. There was one day in the week course when it was doing Vancouver's summer 20 knot thing and they kept in all the 420s, Lasers and Flying Juniors. But, we Opti sailors went out in conditions when it was just about possible to plane. I think this is the single thing that made me think sailing is awesome and I want to do it for the rest of my life. Anyway props to Owen and the SYC team for going out in mad conditions.

I don't think most here 'poo-poo' the Optimist as a place to start a very young sailor. But it's clear young sailors need (a series of) boats to graduate/progress through if they're ever going to become adult sailors & boatowners. I am sure you've seen the stat "by age 22, 95% of them have quit sailing" - though I've lost track of where it originated. Doesn't bode well for the future of sailing...

Congrats Timms, There is nothing so great as seeing your kid tackle high wind in his/ her own boat. My daughter out grew (5'8" 150lbs) her opti at 12 years. She grabed my collar and demanded a laser. A year ago she (13) was out with the Seattle laser Fleet frostbiters, giving it go in the low 20's.
her christmas list is a starting watch and a new spray top.
Yes, i know i'm bragging, sorry.

I knew a kid named Owen that sailed in anything- always trying to go faster or end with a bigger wipeout- if you told him he couldn't do something you all but guaranteed he'd try. I'm not sure how his parents didn't lose their minds---- I should call my mom and thank her for not killing me...

Great vid! Great little sailor-
