See what I mean, woody? My mom is 86 but i can post a photo of her if you want.
She was alive when the pic was taken but just. Photo is probably from the thirties if not earlier in Nanknek,AK.

The boat is a double-ended sprit catboat. There is probably a more specific local name for a boat of this type, although it looks like it could be a ship's lifeboat converted to sail.... for fishing? Hauling? Dunno, didn't some family lore about the boat, or at least about sailing, come with the photo?

bristol bay boat

+1 Purpose built for gillnetting salmon in Bristol Bay Alaska. The canneries built a lot of them, 30 feet long, built to the same design. When gillnetting became mechanized, some of these were converted to cruisers. There was one in my marina that was decked over with a cabin.


This one was labeled as Wooden Boat Center and looks like it is at Pt Hudson(Wooden Boat Festival?):

Here is the convert she and my dad fished in bristol bay. Dad was the photographer, she is the fisherman.
