This is 20 minutes back road through the Canyon from my front door

Pictures

http://chabotgunclub...al-info/ranges/

My Gun Toting Republican father-in-law  nearly had to have his jaw re attached when I drove him over to the range. He was speechless for what must have been 30 minutes he just stood there sorta taking it all in. Kinda like what you might do if you just made it to the top of K2 or something. I just asked him - "So is this like your shooting club in MI?" he mumbled something for a bit then finally said "I thought Bay Area people were Democrats?" The confused look on his face actually had me laughing and he finally snapped out of it walked over to the building and joined the club right there on the spot.

slightly OT, but it looks like you cali folks might want to get your Ruger handguns while you still can.

http://www.thetrutha...mis-california/

Confirmed and explained by Ruger

“California law requires micro-stamping technology that does not exist,” Mark Gurney said. “We cannot meet the new requirement. Even though our handguns haven’t changed in any other way, they will fall off the Approved list.”

If that's the way it is, they won't be the only ones to stop selling handguns in Cali.

Nice place.

Google earth this:

38° 39.848'N  106° 5.185'W

That puts you in the center of our local range, owned by DOW and free to the public. Handgun, trap and rifle out to over 500 meters.

County dump just to the south then the county archery range just south of that with a walk in series of targets at various ranges.

Got a call from the gun store today. Turns out my beautiful kel tec is illegal, and i can be tossed in jail for owning it. Because the barrel is 16", not 18.5". It is not currently registered, nor do i have a permit for transport. But i get to take it back to the store and wait 10 weeks for a legal one to show up.

That sucks, must have been a US gun. How did it get to Canada, and how did nobody in the shop not notice?

It's not up to the shop really. It's an error between the manufacturer not checking shipments, and the rcmp not inspecting the shipment for classification. They usually inspect each and every arms import for verification, and class the firearms as restricted or non restricted.

Took the guns back today. Buddy walked out with an 870 tactical and a savage 64 with red dot. He's happy he came out with a cheap plinker, and we're on the reserve list for when the proper su16fx rifles are available. Kel tec says up to 3 months. They want to swap barrels on all the affected firearms and return them.

I know BBS is going to hate on me for saying this - but someone mentioned a mini-14.  Friends don't let friends buy mini-14s.  Its not a very accurate gun and is a PITA to mount optics on.

Hey Jeff, have you looked at the latest version of the Mini? Ruger's done away with the old pencil barrel and milled some attachment points to the receiver. A friend has one and likes it. However, I haven't shot it, so I haven't been able to personally verify his claims (the man's a fisherman and a powerboater.)

I'll heartily agree the earlier ones were full of doom and unmitigated failure.

I don't know, the 44 mag is feeling a bit too tame of late and there is not a lot above it in the handgun realm. It at least looks like a lot of fun, and who wouldn't want to shoot a 700 grain bullet out of a handgun.... at least once :)

Shooting is supposed to hurt the target, not me.

I'll run 220gr subsonics out of a .300 Blackout all day long, and enjoy shooting the occasional 750gr ball out of my friend's properly-heavy .50BMG, but... a 700gr bullet out of a handgun makes my wrists and elbows hurt, just thinking about it.

Hey Bowman! Good to see you here. Elk hunt was "challenging" which is what you call overcoming little stuff like the front wheel coming off one of the trucks out in the middle of nowhere at 85 mph or so. The boy got sick right before we left and missed it but they saved him a place in next years archery season. I set the trip up and never saw a shoot able elk, one guy in our group passed on 3 because he wanted a monster but everybody else got one. Good trip, horseback int 1.8 _million_ acres of forest.

The wife found a .38 snubbie she wants for concealed carry. Interesting choice for an associate pastor of a medium sized church, who never much before felt the need.
Darn gun comes in purple. Sigh.

It was a sunny day,

His plan was go to AK & hunt a big ass bear,

& he was just testing & {decisions/re - if/what optics}

He probably outweighed me by 75 lb,

& BFR yanked his arms up, and step him back.

He was hitting his targets w/ stock iron, though

If it's that Charter Arms snubbie, watch it!  The 12 oz aluminum wheelie kicks like the proverbial mule. And I heard that the grips interfere with the unloading and loading of the popgun. You're not going to be able to dump the expended shells in one stroke of the rod: forget about the use of a speedloader.

Yaah, but several things occur to me:

  1. In the last several years under the Freedom Group, Remington has been a pit of suck and fail. They've all but destroyed the historic Marlin brand.
  2. They promised the R-51 would be shipping Feb 1st, but didn't have functioning guns for last week's important SHOT Show. Wut?  How could they NOT?
  3. Rem is very big on promises - they can be if they're unconcerned about honoring them
  4. I've regretted almost every time I bought a firearm from it's first year of production. It takes a while to shake out the production bugs. Remington may take 2 or 3 years.
  5. It is a cool little 9mm, at a good price, getting good reviews from almost everyone.

When I get to St Louey and get my CCW, the Rem will certainly be on my short list - after I've wrung it out on the range.

Thanks for the heads up on the Charter Arms. Given the store owner's proclivities its probably something on the order of a Smith and Wesson Ladysmith. My lady is _tiny_ at 4'11" and 100 lbs. and she mentioned it fit her well and she can pullthe trigger. She couldn't rack the slide on about 4 other things we've tried and the only other option might have been one of Berettas Tomcats in .32 with the tip up barrel. Revolver will be more tolerant of potential lack of frequent use. .38 ( even a reduced recoil load ) has more punch than the .32 although I'd hate to get hit by either.

Has your wife been shown the "Punch" technique for racking a semi? Little 14 year old girls can rack a 1911 with ease using that technique. More importantly, has she shot a snubbie with self defense .38 loads? I hate shooting full-house loads out of those little bastards, and I'm a big meat sponge.

You might check out the Ruger SP101. Its a small to medium sized revolver with small grips. (Bill Ruger had little girlie hands.)

I'm hoping the shop will be open tomorrow. I'd like to take a look at it. Shop was closed a bit early due to weather.

Right now we're having a bit of that funny white stuff that Bowman mentioned. This being Delaware everybody has their knickers in a bunch and the place is shutting down.

Not as bad as Washingtoon tho - my Dad lived in Baltimore for a few years and was in and out of Mordor-on-the-Potomac a bunch for his job back in the 60's. he said if the Soviets had ever _really _ wanted to take over, they just had to wait till DC had 4 inches of snow - the whole place shuts down stupid hard and they could have sailed right up the river and taken over unopposed.

LOL. I was out in the DC area for a series of meetings. In the winter, of course. I showed up at the site, after a 20 mile drive in a shitty rental car, to find it closed because of a "snow emergency". Pissed me off. Snow? That little stuff? I've seen more snow in my freezer! I'm embarrassed for you DCite woosies and I'm a Southern California coastie!    ;^)'

She has shot before - her Dad's .357 loaded down with .38s. The reduced recoil stuff is great for that. Local F&W guy ( former neighbor, still occasional hunting buddy) is the armorer for his service and that's all they use.

..the only other option might have been one of Berettas Tomcats in .32 with the tip up barrel. ...

My wife had one. Kind of a neat little gun, but it bit both of us a little and one friend really bad. It's just hard to stay out of the way of that slide, even if you know the gun is prone to biting. I was glad she got rid of it and went to a Kel Tec.

slightly OT, but it looks like you cali folks might want to get your Ruger handguns while you still can.

http://www.thetrutha...mis-california/

Confirmed and explained by Ruger

>“California law requires micro-stamping technology that does not exist,” Mark Gurney said. “We cannot meet the new requirement. Even though our handguns haven’t changed in any other way, they will fall off the Approved list.”

If that's the way it is, they won't be the only ones to stop selling handguns in Cali.

Oops, there goes Smith and Wesson.

Reason I mentioned the beretta is my FIL had one as his oopsie gun when he was town manager of a little town, 15 years ago. Lotsa folks paid quarterly taxes and fees in cash and the police force was mostly part time/semi retired. And not really available. I have shot it and didn't have the slide bite problem, but I only put one or two mags through it, a loooong time ago.

Ok, what she was looking at was a S&W Pink Lady in .38 +P. 5 shot cylinder and a fairly light DA trigger. Nice little revolver.

K. Sigh. Just bought a new diamond, as the engagement ring disappeared.

Boothie.. the bad.. criminals in canada have more rights than their victims. A fruit stand owner in toronto was charged with kidnapping for detaining a thief that repeatedly stole product from the store. All caught on camera. I think the last straw was the thief stealing a bicycle and pedalling off down a back alley. The worse... the guy in that video was denied a ccw despite the obvious proof of the threat against his life. he was told to wait for the cops to deal with it. So far, they haven't. The worst... sun news is pretty much fox news canada. they have a lot of reporting on firearms issues in canada, but don't count on them to be unbiased.

So much for shooting this weekend. Saturday my buddy's gf is sick and needs to go to the hospital. Saturday shooting out. He wants to go sunday. Pack up 8 guns, over 3000 rounds, and get picked up (car is in the shop). We stop for food. Cops in the parking lot and see the cases. We get more than a passing glance, but they leave us alone. Drive up to the range to find it closed for the club's agm! No shooting. So we join the club, and i joke i am going to floor a proposal that no agm can happen during shooting hours. 2 attempts to shoot this weekend. 0 shots fired. Oh well, there is always next weekend.

Damn my buddy at work. Today he says he likes the bushmaster acr, and it's available non restricted here with an 18.6" barrel. Not one to take his word for it, i do some research. Sure enough, $2700 nets me a non restricted acr. By the time i rebuy the kel tec, now the acr, and a 50bmg, i'll have spent a down payment on a house.

I have a serious itch for a SCAR.  I can't decide if I want it in 5.56 or 7.62.  Probably 5.56 just for cheaper ammo.  I already have a precision AR-10 platform on the way, so I don't really "need" another 7.62 gas gun..

Amro - what kind of facilities do you have to shoot the .50 BMG?  If you don't have at least a 1000 yd range - you will get bored with it very quickly.  Plus $5 per trigger pull will get old rapidly.

edit:  Having said that, I shot a buddies suppressed .50BMG bolt gun at a steel plate at 1400 yds with incendiary rounds.  I loved the mini-fireballs when the bullet would hit the plate for the rock wall behind.  But it was more fun because I didn't have to pay for the ammo.

No range in the area will allow 50bmg. We'd have to hike into the bush to plink with it. And up here those mini missiles are nearly $10 a boom. I want it because there is a petition going around up here by the gun control fucktards to have it banned. They think the gangs will do drivebys with a 35 lb 5'+ long rifle. Someone i talked to felt someone could shoot a plane with one. I reminded her that pretty much any gun could shoot and hit a plane from the end of a runway, and it's yet to happen in north america, that i know of. Unfortunately the ar platform is restricted by name here, so the acr with an 18.6" barrel is a treat. That and the kel tec i bought, returned, and will buy again are the closest we can get in canada to an ar we can plink in the bush with. Even the canadian made nea-15 is restricted at home! The acr being made available here will be the dmr version.

I have a SCAR-16.  It is.... good, not great.  Ergonomically it has a great feel to it, and it's as reliable and accurate as the day is long.  The downsides are the price (!), and the fact that some aftermarket AR parts (trigger groups, safeties, buttstocks, etc) won't fit it.

For the money, if I were to do it over again and really felt like I needed a piston-op AR, I'd probably go buy a PWS or Adams upper, and buy a bunch of ammo with the money I saved.

I have a piston AR.  Its an LMT MWS.  Love it!  Its the one I plan on running suppressed when I get my Form 4s back.

I also saw an SBR SCAR that I will probably eventually get.  With the folding stock and short barrel, it definitely will be a cool rifle.

Yeah, I simply don't get that mentality.  Jocal has a hardon against .50 BMGs as well and it just makes no sense.  Barretts have been around for a long time and shockingly the LA & chicago gangs just don't seem to have much interest in committing crimes with $9000 rifles that you have to have a flatbed and a handtruck truck just to haul it around.  But we MUST ban them, because they are really the problem out there on the streets.

Not a fair comparison, the .460 is designed to take down M26s in their native habitat, which consists of lying dormant in thick brush.

Thugs don't do drivebys with 22s. No point. Thugs don't do drivebys with something they can't easily conceal, like a 50, or an ar, or any rifle pretty much. But the gun control nuts never see that. It's scary what they go after here, simply because it's "scary". One article i read a while ago described a mini 14 as a "duck gun", that falls under the radar but should be classed as an ar. In positive news, the minister of public safety, responsible for firearms licensing and registration, recently went thru the course and exam, and had most of his staff do so too. The reason was so he could better understand the frustrations of gun owners and help to improve and simplify our complicated gun laws. We can only hope.

Rick, i have recently become acquainted with tannerite. Lovely product it is. I feel nothing should be shot at without at least 50 lbs of it in close vicinity of the target. Or as the target. That shit be magical and will make best use of an m26 with a bullseye on the beam.

I think the ideal rifle to take down Mac26s might be the .50 Beowulf. Semi auto, lightweight, can be fired from the shoulder, recoil won't make you cry like a school girl or John Boehner, so you can hunt all day without requiring physical therapy and rehab after. I have one and it is a ton o fun.

Just got back from the range. Pretty good day overall, but the one gun i figured was rock solid started giving me problems. The 10/22 had a few fail to feeds, and one of the mags seems to be jammed internally. While loading another mag i broke my steel lips loader. And the sight decided to work itself loose so i couldn't even hit a target. I forgot the loader for the gsg 1911, so i fired off about 100 more rounds in the glock and called it a day.

I have a couple of cannons. Marlin 1875 CS (24" barrel) 8 round mag in 45-70 aaaaannnd ( drumroll please )

Weatherby 338-378.

The Marlin is fun to shoot - very gentle with standard ammo. It gets frisky with the stoked up stuff from Buffalo Bore or Cor-Bon.
Re penetration, a few years back I shot a black bear with a 405 Buffalo bore.
She had walked up my trail and was looking at me from about 30 feet. I hit her just below the left eye as she lowered her head. The skull was pretty much destroyed and the bullet traveled down the neck and hit the left shoulder and blew the left foreleg off the body. Non digital camera and I haven't digitized the pic. Hornady LeveRevolution will penetrate 18" of hardwood log.
The Weatherby is also about 5.50 a pop - that's why I started reloading. Essentially point blank to 300 yards with a 250 gr Nosler. Thanks be they put a decent muzzle brake on it at the factory.

If you are looking for good deals on ammo, slickgun.com is one of the best I have found. Bought some bulk 223 on there a while back and it was easily 5 cents a round cheaper than what I could find anywhere else. Herters brand steel case stuff. Ran about 700 rounds of it through my duty AR in a rifle school and never had a hickup.

Took a newly licensed friend into the local gun shop yesterday to get his first gun. He wanted an 870 express, and had a budget just under the price of an 870 tactical. I figured since we were there i'd have him handle some future purchases now so he knows what he is getting. Many handguns later it was AR time. And dummy me, i showed him the kel tec su16fx he's been drooling over. He blows his budget and buys one. As the salesman is walking out to get my buddy's rifle, i put my head down and said "better bring 2". So now i have an su16fx in my collection. Please tell me it stops soon. I can't afford any more.

One or two and you're a responsible gun owner, two to 12 and you're a gun nut; any more than a dozen and you're a "collector." If the Peoples Republic of Canada frowns on black AR's, go with a Ruger Mini-14. A .223in a plain brown wrapper, with a Canadian invented (Garand) action to boot.

I'm still doing my damnest to force the John Howards of this world to make weekly appointments to see their cardiologists.....

IHCparts4037.jpg

Boothy, I have a serious question for you, Why do you need that many guns?

Now before you answer, I'm not saying you shouldn't have that many nor that you should be prevented from having that many, legitimately interested.  I guess I see you need 1-2 small caliber for small game, maybe a couple of larger caliber for Deer etc.  a hand gun for protection/range and maybe a high quality one for comp if that's what you do.  I'm counting 12 rifles and 10 handguns

Is it simply a collection for collection sake?

I suspect you're looking at a component of his retirement plan.

It should be noted that Boothy is violating the Fifth Commandment of Gun Safety: Never lay out your gun collection all in one place.

  1. You SigOth may realize just how many guns you have
  2. You may realize just how many guns you have

Neither is conducive to future expansion of the collection.

I always thought that being able to fit them all in one photo was proof that the collection was too small.

We agree -- however, the SWMBOs may not.

Luckily for me, my wife is now mostly just focused on how she looks in a bikini and does not care about purses or shoes. As long as I pay for the gym, nutritionist, and bikinis, there are no questions about the costs of my toys. I don't know how long this will last, but for multiple reasons, I am hoping it is forever.

C'mon Ceasar; Rome wasn't built in a day.

You've been in the game for, what, three years or less?

At the rate you've been acquiring iron, you'll be awash in blued steel and gun oil by the time da Nurse shuffles you off this mortal coil.

This is important:

Libtard: I'm depressed. I'm going to buy a gun.

Proper Response: Hole Lee Shi'ite! Call the cops, suicide prevention, school district, YouTube....

Gun Nut: I'm depressed. I'm going to buy a gun.

Proper Response: Way to work through your blues, bro. Can I go to the gun shop with you?

You like the grip on that thang? I've got big paws and it feels like a 2x4. But, lots and lots of people love 'em.

The Walther PPQ M2 is getting a lot of good noise. Unfortunately, I'll have to emigrate to America before I can try one.

The grip size does not bother me. I have heard the same thing on the grip size for the sig 226 and that is one of my favorites. My son has the m9 version of the 92 and the more I shoot it, the more I like it, but if I get one it will be the Inox finish. I had not heard much on the PPQ, I will have to see if I can find one to shoot.
