I'm looking for a ride if anyone hears anything. Have several buddies who are looking too. SAS certified. Experience on everything from Swans to HPR and in between. Laid back and very easy to get along with. Same for mates...

I think one of the boats in portland maine is still looking for some crew, it's an old beneteau 45, they've done the race a number of times.

Picked the following off the FAQ for the 2014 rule changes.  Seems like a good thing to me -

Q: What is the reasoning behind the adoption of time penalties for the 2014 Race?
 
A: For many years, the BROC has imposed monetary penalties for failure to satisfy eligibility, entry, measurement and registration requirements. These monetary penalties have proven ineffective in the case of some deep-pocketed racers, and have led to an increasingly burdensome entry process and to the potential for unfair advantage for racers who may wish to make last-minute sail and other gear decisions dependent on weather forecasts. To counter this disturbing trend, BROC has replaced monetary penalties with elapsed time penalties beginning in 2014. These apply to administrative matters rather than infractions that may be associated with sailing the race course, and are designed to provide a level playing field (eligibility and measurement) or an orderly race administration (entry and registration).
 
The penalty for failure to meet eligibility, entry, measurement and registration requirements in a timely manner shall be the addition of 10 minutes to the yacht’s elapsed time for each 24 hour period or any part thereof for which the yacht failed to meet the relevant deadline. Such requirements include any rule having a deadline, e.g. late supplemental information form, rating data, fees, crew waivers, satisfactory completion of inspection, and registration appearances.

a number of boats  did this including one named in this thread.  ignore the deadline, optimize, pay the penalty.

The Bermuda race website has announced that 180 boats have signed up for the race this year, but as with prior years, some won't make it to the starting line. For example on April 4, 2012, there were 183 boats signed up but only 165 ended up starting. If we exclude those that have not yet declared the class in which they intend to race, we get 170 boats or a 3% increase in entries over last year. The average number of entries from 1998-2012 is 186.4.
 
The double handed class has seen the most growth, in fact it’s the only class whose numbers have exceeded the centennial 2006 fleet.

Thanks Murphness. 

 

Charlie was as generous as they come and gave many people an opportunity to play on a scale that would have otherwise been impossible. It was always a bit of a 'Bad News Bears' menagerie of crew, but Charlie liked to keep things interesting.

I hope so! I think it'll depend on how many crew will be available to bring the boat back from Bermuda, see how hard the can push her.

 

There's plenty of time between the two though, hopefully we can do it again! But without the rig repeat of last year...

Who wants to take bets on the weather?  Better yet, who wants to look at the weather over the North Pacific and recent solar flare activity and make wildly inaccurate guesses that we can all debate?

Meander seems to be a little WSW of the RL so it'll likely still be offering good current come next week.  FIngers crossed for consistent breeze.

In short, you want to hit the favorable current created by an eddy or meander to speed your thrash to the onion patch along.  OR you want to avoid hitting unfavorable current, especially if the wind shits out on you and you end up drifting backwards.

wind looks pretty crappy for the first day or two at least.

 

might be a sea breeze near the shore.., but no gradient breeze for when we get offshore

I said that after last years Down the Bay race and somehow I fucked up and did it again.

 

Hopefully a reasonably quick trip to Bermuda this year, I'm too busy to bob around the Gulf Stream for a couple days.

Who wants to take bets on the weather?  Better yet, who wants to look at the weather over the North Pacific and recent solar flare activity and make wildly inaccurate guesses that we can all debate?

I will be arriving in Newport in 2 weeks - looking forward to my first Bermuda Race.  It will be fun crewing for a change......

note:This race two years ago was EVOS last ocean race,he called it,he sailed with his mate Lorenzo and we have a great photo from the start where you can tell he is telling the bloke on the boat to leeward to shaddaup.

Make it a good one and we will be watching from afar :D

Looks horrible. If you're planning on going, I'd really reconsider. Tell you skipper you're suddenly not well and I will happily take your place and spare you a long agonizing journey to a place that, according to my sources, just ran out of rum. Not one drop left. That's if you even make it there. With lights wind and shifty currents it wouldn't shock me if some boats arrive 7 days after the start missing one or two portly ballast technicians and evidence of cannibalism. Take a long look at your fellow cremates and if you can't identify the person you'd eat first, well, I bet they wouldn't have that same problem. If they ask you what you weigh it's not about keeping weight off the bow, it's about how many can feed off of you once the PB & J runs out. 

 

Seriously, why subject yourself to such a thing? Save yourself and I will subject myself the all of the horrors on your behalf.

In case you are unfamiliar with the SI's for this race, in the past, it has been about a 20 page document, with quite a lot of detailed instructions about starting and finishing, including required communications etc.

 

I might not even have access to a printer after they post these things!

 

we don't even really know the marks of the course yet - sure, you say, it's newport to bermuda, but there are govt marks to be honored in newport, and govt marks to be honored in bermuda. we don';t even have any info about the finish line yet.

so i was including the NOR in my 20 page estimate for past years  - actually the SI's were 9 pages, including the ammendemnts.

 

and it seems that we got the scratch sheet at the meeting last time

 

so i retract part of my rant.

 

still, i don't see why we can't have SI's a few days before the race

MeteoEarth is showing 20-25 most of the way starting late Saturday afternoon.

 

 

GFS and most of the human forecasts have that SW at 15-20 pretty far south - below the front.., so the problem is you have to get to it...

SIs are now posted.  Decided not to print them out at work lest that tempt the "oh hey can you do this thing at the last minute" god.

Excited, but nervous about the forecast.  The Texas Tower Station is forecasting 3 knots NW through Sunday.  The Bermuda Station is forecasting 18 SE moving to SSE Monday.  

 

What do you think the real conditions will be?

I'd hope for a long code zero reach. That sail is pretty magic - I only had to add jumper patches the other day. The new #3 is itching for a long breezy beat.

After this mornings update in thinking #1 at the start then zero to the stream. ?????? When we are inside. #3 to BDA

If you are sailing the rhumb line take plenty of food. You will sit in a big flat windlass hole for 2+ days. Look way east or west and you can go around it.

Here's a brief on the DH division I sent to Clean, perhaps to find its way to the FP:
 
The Newport Bermuda Race, the "Mt Monadnock" of sailing, begins tomorrow with the first class going off at 1300. Short handed racing is slowly gaining popularity here in the US and this year's double handed division has 21 boats ready to go, but this is a far cry from the 30+ that applied for entry. 
 
We all know why Dragon won't be on the line, and Rail Meat's in-race forum antics will be missed but how and why did all the others drop out? Sure it was only $50 to apply for entry, but we have to assume they all wanted to be there and can't because they couldn't get ready in time. More evidence that the first big chunk of any distance race is fought before the starting gun sounds.
 
The DH division will be split into two classes, as has been done the last several runnings. The first, and slower class will start at 1510 and will be occupied by names we've all seen before. Lora Ann and Paladin have been dominating the Long Island Sound short handed scene for the better part of a decade now, the former with at least three Bermuda race DH wins and the latter winning in 2010. But do either of these boats enter Bermuda 1-2, or how about the 2012 Bermuda race winner, Mireille? Nope. Might they be rusty? Probably not, but it's fun to talk a little smack pre-race.
 
Enter Scott Miller of Resolute and his co-skipper Gust Stringos who each have three Bermuda 1-2s and plenty of Bermuda Races under their belts. Resolute was best in fleet in last year's 1-2 on combined score and won every other short handed race he entered. The guy's got momentum and this could well be Resolute's year.
 
But there's plenty of other contenders out there include Kiva and Alibi, who have plenty of experience on this course and have earned third place showings in 2004 and 2012 respectively. Another entry worth noting is the J111 Eagles Dare, who just rolled off a DH line honors victory at the Block Island race and gave Resolute a run for their money in a couple solo races last summer in Mass & Maine. 
 
The four Class 40s are going to have a hell of time reaching the podium because of their ORR ratings. We all remember 2012 when Gryphon Solo 2 destroyed the DH fleet on elapsed, including all the other Class 40s and still only managed a second place on corrected. No doubt that wasn't good enough for Joe and he's planning to do something about it this week but his biggest challenge is the rating.
 
Anyway you slice it, the light air, finesse sailors will have a keen advantage for the first chunk of the race. Best of luck to all.

I'm bow/trim/helm on the watch with the MFO. Sandy has it for the watch with the BN and TJ.

Edit: with the rating mods done the bow is literally stupid easy. In line peels are our hardest maneuvers. Port track at the start though!!!

I realize the race hasn't started yet and the tracker won't start until 4 hours later, but...  It looks like the tracker can only be viewed as an insert in the pantaenius website, so you can't get a larger (nor full-screen) image.  You might be able to on a tablet with their app, but I'm not on a tablet.

 

Anyone see a way to get to the tracker without having to look at the embedded version?  Am I missing something stupid?
