Terra I'm a great fan of Comanche but in comparison to things like IMOCA's etc it is a fucking slug, plus takes you and 20+ of your best mates to go sailing in.
If you think new IMOCA boats are anything like the Comanche, you need to brush up on your yacht design principles.
Comanche is a truck. A big, heavy, overweight truck, essentially a scaled up 2008-era Volvo 70. Open 60s are far more complicated and innovative, and if scaled up, would own all the monohull records. What's the reason no one scales them up? Because the sport's rich guys (aside from the northeast US and one guy in Australia and their hired armies) are busy with boats that make Comanche seem like...well, a slow old truck.
Those who don't like the design of Comanche must also dislike the new Imoca boats and just about every other boat designed by VPLP at the moment.
CLEAN correct me if I am wrong but wasn't Comanche built to break records? And who now holds the 24 Hour record? Whether you like the boat or not it has completed it's objective so far. There have been 2 negative articles published by Sail World and this one seems to me to be off the mark. Unless off course you are Brian's mate? Every boat VPLP designs is designed for a purpose, why the sudden attacks on Comanche or it's owners? That's the $$$ question. Now get off the fence Clean and tell me something I don't know. LOL
The record it broke was held by a Volvo 70 so it didn't exactly digest a large meal to get in the record books.
The real problem for Comanche is, if records are its game, is a single handed 65 footer might spoil their 24hr party, this year or next and if not, then they are praying some Russian Oilypop doesn't build a 200 footer with Russky submariners taking turns to grind and has no interest in places like Hobart town or Fastnet Rk.
this seem to be the crux of the issue for all boats expressly designed to break records. technology is alwasy moving forward and it doesn't take long before your record breaker is eclipsed by something newer and faster, then you have a boat searching for a purpose. mari cha IV is a perfect example. raised absolute hell for a few years breaking records but as soon as it was eclipsed it was put out to pasture.
