Looking forward to the video because I can't see a safety line, also it looks like the boat is going sideways versus forward.  Some ingenious trickery to keep it at the same relative angle to the wind while slipping

So cool.  So is Alex.  Two summers ago he was in NYC with one of his boats and through a contact we arranged a visit.  Went down in three ribs from LIS with about 15 kids and got a full on tour of the boat.  Alex spent over three hours going over the boat, explaining all the parts and then gave everybody a lesson on his electronics and nav station down below.  The shore crew was busy getting everything set for their record attempt but they were also very patient with everybody.

He plugged in some stuff into his routing program with a course across the pond, and the routing program said he would set the record.  (Alex was in NYC to set the record sailing across.)  And net net when it was all done he actually set the record.

Said it often .... you might criticise his sailing ability (although in my view you would be wrong) but you just cannot beat him for his sponsor and general sailing PR work.

Well done Alex

I've been a big fan of Alex Thompson for a while. This is a great stunt. It sounds kinda lame to call it a stunt though. Good job making your sponsors look brilliant. It's shot nicely and edited nicely. I dig the spray on his jacket in the lead up as well as his nonchalant jump onto #99.

But… I want to see his jump without the cut to the 2nd camera. It looked like he might have over rotated in the jump viewed from the heli. I wonder if he landed on his back in that first attempt and if there was a second jump. Whatever the case, he's a friggin' stud. Balls that clank and cool as hell...

The person you are thinking of might be Alex Pella. Alex was also the skipper/consultant of DCNS for the film "En Solitaire."

According to a post on the Vendée Globe, it only took one take for Alex Thompson to film the mast walk.

Pete Goss talks about using the method of laying the boat over with the keel to leeward as a method of going up the rig during his Vendee Globe in '96.

Jean Le Cam has a classic photo of him standing on the end of his deck spreader at speed (I guess that might have been on Bonduelle). I can't find it on the internet though.

I have also heard of Alex T doing a part of the mast walk during corporate sailing days, so maybe that is where he got the idea from.

ON the video jump he was clearly over rotating (heels coming up behind  his back) shortly after take off. He probably landed  on his back. Clearly the landing was from a different headfirst jump where he still was going over but not nearly as much. Then a feet first shot. So at least 3 jumps.

Also a few barrels of dead fish strung from the leeward rail below the surface would help keep the stability on the heeling while the helmsman could drive merrily along

could be a useful approach to getting up the rig quick during a race?

So I assume they had ballast to leeward and keel up. I suppose if you had a remote for the keel and ballast pump it could be something one could try in the middle of the ocean rather than jumaring it up the rig which must be a PITA. Wonderful to see these guys converting whacky theory into reality.

Just imagining how much fun they had...

Director "OK, are we ready to go? Great. Action!"

Alex scurries up the rig.

Director "Noooooo, not again! That dive was frankly appalling. Hair & make up please, and we'll do it AGAIN. WHEN will you get it right?"

Rinse and repeat... ad nauseam...

AT "I'm getting a bit cold and fed up with this"

Director."Tough. It was your idea. I want perfect. Again..."

Presuming ed has got it exactly right is this last post.  there were several attempts and a stuntman on standby, but alex said "no way I could let that guy do it".

It is a handhold/ oh shit bar on the top of the mast, in the windex socket.

There is no trickery at all in this.  Balls of steel is right.  Maybe head of steel too diving from that height.

What I don't get is why you asked that gay pornstar to do the interview. I mean, he can't ask a straight question without babbling pointlessly about what he thinks he knows, his yeah-man-oh-yeah-and-"scratch"-yeah tone is just plain annoying and on top of it we have to put up with him rocking in his chair scratching his balls the whole time.

Alex is definitively a very likeable and cheerful guy.

I wasn't scratching my balls.  I was holding your mom's head down.

Awesome zing!

He's right. Double-handed racing is increasing in popularity in the US. 22 DH entries for Pacific Cup this year. There were only 45ish boats in the fleet in 2012.

I've grown to like Alex a lot more in the ;ast few years.

I think he won't ever win the Vendee or Barcelona, the French are a long way ahead of him still.

It took me 4 hours but I finally made it through. Really enjoyed it. Seems like you two get on well and he was doing more than just answering questions, rather making conversation.

I still think the interview that Clean did with Kenny, on one of the final VOR legs was one of the best ever.
