Michel Desjoyeaux was unbeatable in the old days.

He won for Macif in the vendee globe last year.

Why the crew change? To give way for the new generation?

They are all three about the same age.

Macif (french insurance company) sponsor more than just one program in offshore racing. They run a Figaro program where young sailors compete each year to win the Macif sponsorship. The skipper who wins has a year of using the MACIF Figaro and the support of the Pole Finistere which is a program that supports Figaro sailors in training and preparation for the Figaro racing circuit.

Francois Gabart's partnership with Macif is a separate deal. His IMOCA program with them finishes this year with the Route du Rhum. After that race he will sell the IMOCA that he used to win the Vendee Globe 2012. His new program has started already, he's building a 100ft trimaran that he will use to do single-handed records and he is hoping to start up a short-handed maxi racing program with other big multis. His new boat is due to be delivered in 2015, its a VPLP design being built at both Multiplast in Vannes and CDK in Lorient and Port La Foret.

Too bad Gildas Morvan / Cercle Vert broke his mast soon after the start - was certainly one of the favourites..

They spend last night under big spinnaker, with 30 kts, gust to 35kt, everybody was waiting for is neighboor to drop the kite down.
Now the wind is lower.
They are going to deal with a small low near gibraltar, and then nearly no wind on the road to palma.
It looks like the boats in the west are going to have the wind longuer than the fleet in the east.

Roland jourdain and martin lepape on 'la cornouaille' hit an ofni with theyr port rudder. They have no structural damage but the trailingedge at the end of the rudder is broken.
They continue racing, and wait for the wind to come down before diving to see what they could do.

Erwan is the nephew of sailing legend Eric Tabarly.

The rest of the fleet is heading south. the first four heading west.

Now that's an interesting course guess.

The group going westward stay in the ocean currents I think.

And they stay away from the doldrums between 5 degrees north and south of the equator

It's a complete split.  No consolidating at this point.  I like the West, but there are incredibly talented guys on both sides of rumbline.  It will be fun to watch it play out.  I know Railmeat's watching!

Right now the south part of the fleet is 10+ knots while the leading top 4 north, are round 7 knots.

South looks better to me. The leading north boats are heading there but it looks like they will have some trouble.  Roland Jourdain for the win would be very nice.

It looks great now.  I always have respect for the guys who buck the cruising route though.  It's a risky move that can pay huge, and certainly isn't as much fun as going south.  I guess things will look different in 48 hours.

There is quite a good race going on between the legends in 10th - 12th place.  

 

Yeah! A bit like watching the latest MotoGP race and marveling at Mike Hailwood fighting off Giacomo Agostini while Marc Marquez smashes the opposition. FYI 3rd and 4th are in sight of each other and they took the correct route after La Palma.

Webcast live with 3rd and 4th less then then 100m between the two at a few minutes from the finish!

 

For all the talk of SA about "we love this one design ocean racing" bla bla bla bla. Not a word when it matters. GFY.

And less than 20s between 3rd and 4rth after three weeks of racing. And the first "legend" (4th) isn't "Curly" or "Le Roi Jean" or "kito" but the immense Bilou.

Great race and the coverage here was, as usual.  ... abysmal (just recall "Mr Clean" who thought all he had to do was phone in at the last minute to have a chat with  Justine Metraux in the last mini transat as if her dream was to speak with some 40+ year old pervert she never heard of after spending 3 weeks in a tiny sailboat crossing the Atlantic).

 

It is hilarious to me that the editors of this site present themselves as "Anarchists" when in fact they are just anti-conformist conformists who believe wearing sunglasses and baseball caps indoors automatically makes them cool and relevant. (Even worse is when they show up at events selling their f...ing caps and T-Shirts as if anybody in his right mind thought it was cool to wear either one).

 

Anarchists: Test of some "revolutionary dinghy" that basically looks like a Juan-K design in smaller. Sail on a shitload-of-money-costing foiling thing (that furiously looks like any modern cat fitted with AC/Groupama C/Hydros etc foils) and call it the best thing since sliced bread for "our" sport because some dudes in a regatta on that day stopped racing and looked at them (And also because SA special envoy suffered several hours in a plane to report all this.). Fantastic images of a (very expensive) mast collapsing on a bunch of (very expensive) guys hiking,  And last but not least, the inevitable St-Barth Hyper-Maxi-Viagra-Yacht footage everybody has.

 

At least one merit of this place is one can vent steam on a bad day, and having done so, it's time to write off.

makes me wonder what makes an offshore race popular outside France, like RdR, TJV, ..

Edouard, If I may ..... there is something called time-zones which may explain that the front page could not have had an article up at 12 am.
Besides this fact, did this race really deserve world wide coverage?

I have followed it closely because of a totally biased and emotional fanship for one of the skippers (who, incidentally, won)
But, I believe that it mainly showed the current crisis of professional French solo sailing.
Out of 14 finishing boats 6 are sponsored by local communities and 1 at 50% !! (Is that going to last ?)
Former top notch pro sailors have to chase cash as a guest.

Add a race where the Southern route obviously is a must, with few other ways of making the difference than tenacity and navigational détails.
Brilliant for the best teams, but not much to enthuse about, every day, in what is a spectators' sport.

In other words is the AG2R attractive enough for the very international audience of S.A, mostly made of actual racing sailors ?

PS: the "(very expensive) mast collapsing on a bunch of (very expensive) guys hiking" has more than half the transat sailors sailing in just one boat of that other St Barth event.

Eduard has a tantrum boner about SA and Clean for some reason. Not sure why but its not his first time getting on a soap box about it. Like RS said, there have been front page articles, more than I've seen on other popular sailing sites during the race, and that should speak for itself.

There is a lot of coverage on the web and SA did a decent job in my view, you just need to look around. It was a really interesting race.  The north - south split and then top four running into the finish were great.  Roland Jourdain so close to the podium. Definitely enjoyed following it but pretty concerned that so many top 'established' guys like Jourdain,  Jean Le Cam, Kito De Pavant and Michel Desjoyeaux (the last 3 running 10, 11 & 12 respectively currently with more than 140 nm to go) don't have substantial sponsorship.  None of them are lined up for the RDR I think, so far at least.

I agree that for some of them the lack of sponsorship is a worry, but in Mich-Des' case I get the impression he's semiretired, and could definitely find sponsorship if he was in need of it

Sponsorship: more than a worry it is unfortunately a fact of life.

Even if they choose the northern route and ended in the back of the fleet? I think it's hilarious.
