(04-16) 22:15 PDT SAN FRANCISCO -- A 42-foot catamaran sailboat crashed into a buoy off the coast of Redwood City on Wednesday, killing one person and injuring two others, according to the U.S. Coast Guard.

The accident happened about 7 p.m. and the vessel was towed to shore, Coast Guard Lt. j.g. Mark Leahey said.

Three uninjured people were left on the boat, which was not taking on water, Leahy said. The two who were injured were boarded onto a U.S. Geological Survey boat that was nearby and were taken to shore, he said.

Redwood City police are investigating the crash.

Catalina/Catamaran -- what's the difference.  It is not like you can tell them apart at a distance.

No, he was hit by the mast coming down after they hit a lit mark, and other boats couldn't get to them because it was too shallow.

Very sad, my condolences to the family and friends. Always sad to lose a fellow sailor.
