Well, I have to say my racing and cruising weekend seems to have gone better than yours Ajax. Two 48 mile point to point races, one Friday and another back home on Sunday.  Was a difficult start on Friday, approximately 30 miles of light, bumpy, shifty, downwind sailing followed by the breeze clocking and filling in nicely.  The kite did become a bit of a handful with only 2 of us close reaching in the upper teens. Should have put up the flat kite.  Managed to finish third, not too bad for the slowest boat in the fleet.  Trip home was solid.  Not the most fun start line/area but once that was clear away we went. Nice kite reach, this time with the flat one up.  Sunshine, breeze in the low teens on the beam and away we go.  As the breeze clocked and built fortunately we managed to hold onto our kite for about an hour longer than any of the other boats. Another less than fun kite drop, but it did come down dry, in one piece, and not perforated.  Finished the race to find out we were on the podium again, this time at the top.  WooHoo! As an extra bonus the icebox still had ice in it from Thursday morning. Good news for holidays. t minus 11 days and counting.

You guys crack me up.

 

Last night was kind of a mess. The race started right as a flurry of lightning happened, with an approaching storm cell.

It was a downwind start, and I held off on the spinnaker set because I was seconds away from bailing out, and just couldn't decide what to do.

 

In the end, we continued on but I screwed us royally by nixing the spinnaker set.

How about doing a Transpac followed by some cruising with some old school style? 

 

Good possibility of being the most photographed boat in the class and with a corrected time a decent finish.

Obviously, the dinghy is from a local shop dropping off tea sandwiches, cold and hot soups, biscuits, cakes, sweet creme, tea and ale. One gets peckish when actively sporting.

Not only gorgeous, but so far ahead of it's time, it's new again!

Maximize waterline for the hull, flatten the stern, keep the bow in the water and power up with lots of sail and a big sprit!

Thursday night. Fine weather. Breeze at about 7. Five boats in division 2. We approach the line: three, two, one,..........no horn.  Three boats are right at the line, and turn up the line toward the RC (at the left end due to local conditions). After I check my watch two times, I turn across the line onto the course for the first mark. The other two boats follow a few seconds later, and we off with me a couple boat-lengths a head. Surprisingly, I hold the lead to the end for the victory.

 

I can't actually remember a complete failure of the sound signal at the start of the race. The problem was compounded by a start line about 4 times longer than needed so I couldn't make out the flags on the RC, nor did we hear if they hailed us.

 

After the race, one of the other skippers said he normally races as crew in fleets where the starting signals are transmitted by radio. Is this practice widespread? Is it even a legal use of VHF?
