I just moved to the VA/MD area from Chicago, and am going into sailing withdrawal. I don’t know a thing about sailing in the Northern VA DC MD area looking for some local advice. Any one know of a boat looking for crew? Been sailing Lake Michigan for the last 7 years with 5 Mac races under my belt. Any help would be greatly appreciated as sitting at home on the weekends, not a boat, sucks.

check out Spinsheet.com

Spinsheet is the local sailing rag and has the pulse of sailing on the Chesapeake. They host a crew listing party each spring which puts boat owners and potential crew together.  There is also an online service on the website that lists boats and crew as well. It isn't hard to find a ride if you have the time to come walk the docks on a wednesday night.

If you have any specific questions......PM me.

Cheers,

Geoff

Pick a club convenient to you, check out schedule on website, show up race day (or evening), walk the docks.  There's always a boat needing crew.

If you're downtown DC, Washington Sailing Marina (south of Reagan Airport) has Tuesday Night races on the Potomac.  You can rent Flying Scots out of Belle Haven Marina south of Alexandria.

This is about as easy as it gets.

Take MD and Annapolis specifically.  Show up at SSA on Tuesday nights and we will get you in a dinghy.  Show up at AYC on Wednesday and you will find a big boat ride.  Etc...

Similar story in Baltimore, or DC, just different nights and different clubs.

Around here you will find more sailing (dinghy, big boat, rating, and OD, multi and mono) than you can possibly do in and within 50 miles of DC, so as Kent says, where are you and where do you want to be racing relative to work and family commitments is the question.

If you can't find a place to race you are not looking!

Yep, where are you? When do you want to sail? And what are your time constraints?

SMSA in Solomons, MD

Wednesday Nights: Keel Boat Racing.

Thursday Nights: Laser OD and Portsmouth Dinghy Racing.

Friday Nights: Happy Hour at the club with lots of sailors around to get information and meet some local sailors.

And lots of racing of both kinds on the weekends. Web site is not the best but it's current and the calendar is up to date.
