It seems that among a bunch of dragons and Etchells, two irreplaceable classic yachts under restoration were lost in the fire at J Samuel White's in Cowes.  One was the lovely Mylne 58 foot ketch "Fedoa" whose refit was all but done.

For a glimpse of some of the love and care and exquisite craftsmanship that went into this over the last 6 years, see http://fedoa.blogspot.co.uk/

I loved the Mylne designs, Thendara, Mariella, and the others.  This was a very pretty one.  This is a truly sad day.

Compare the FP (yes, there is one) photo with the one above.  That white framed tent, untouched in the FP photo, was the restoration tent for Fedoa, seen burning in the photo here.  Same angle of photo.  All happened very quickly.  Ugh....

Tragic - that sort of loss is kind of like a house fire where a family loses all the pictures of their children when they were little - some things are simply irreplaceable

story goes, it affected the majority of the Etchells fleet, about 9 XOD's, some dragons, and numerous other boats. such a shame!

Approx 14 Etchells. Horrible. But apparently, replacements have been found already.

News isn't good. More than 70 boats burnt.

http://www.classicbo...ecomes-clearer/

The extent of the damage is still unknown, but confirmed losses so far include the 36ft (11m) yacht Charles Sibbick Witch (1902) that has been under restoration for a long time by her owner Martin Nott, CB’s publishing consultant; and the 58ft 6in (17.8m), Mylne yacht Fedoa built in 1927, also the subject of a long, ongoing restoration, this one by boatbuilder Patrick Moreton at his yard, Moreton Marine, for a private owner. Early reports indicate that a fleet of about 15 Etchells yachts and at least one wooden Dragon and five original X One Designs have gone too. An 1896 steam pinnace and a Dunkirk Little Ship are also feared lost, as well as around 50 GRP production yachts. There are thought to be no serious injuries or deaths. The owner of the Medina Yard was helping the clean-up operation as we went to press, and was unavailable for comment. Evacuated residents, who spent the night at the Corinthian Yacht Club, have returned home.

Sad day for the boating world although how the fuck Clean can know what no one else knows (not even the investigating authorities who wont be able to access the site properly for a while).

Yes there was an Auto shop on site, yes the acetylene cylinders exploded but the cause of the fire has not yet been ascertained although it is understood to have started in TJ Motors.

Given the material in both an auto repair business and a boat building/repair business it is hardly surprising the fire was so intense.

Pity there wasn't a big tug or offshore vessel in the river with a few mofo fire monitors.

But as above, given the material, that may not have helped either.

Sad to see :-(

From those photos, it doesn't look like anything that went through the fire will be at all salvageable.

Shame to see some truly irreplaceable boats taken by the flames.

Not only beautiful, but a wonderful piece of history. My condolences to everyone involved, it must have been like losing a good friend. So glad there were no deaths or injuries associated with the fire, and kudos to the Corinthian Yacht Club.

I am not a gambling man - however, I wouldn't rule out a small wager regarding shit Front Page comments that Grinder and others refers to and the recent "That's Unpossible" thread also in the Sailing Anarchy Forum where Scott was taken to task for being a douche about boats that he doesn't sail or understand - i.e. Etchells

Puerile and Vindictive seems to be just 2 of the editorial themes that this site is taking.

My heart goes out to all that have lost their boats.

Sad to read about Espada, I so nearly bought her 20 years ago and ended up with a Bolero. She was a beautiful boat.

An error on the front page? Perish the thought!

Sad when a boat is lost through no fault of the crew or force of weather.

Started by spark from welder.

http://www.iwcp.co.u...fied-93848.aspx

THE cause of Monday's fire in Cowes, on the Isle of Wight, has been identified by the fire and rescue service.

An Isle of Wight fire service spokesman confirmed today (Thursday) the fire started accidentally when somebody at Tee Jay Motors was welding and a spark hit a fuel source.

Despite the person's best efforts to quell the blaze with a fire extinguisher, it began to spread.

The spokesman said the growing fire prevented the person from reaching a second fire extinguisher and because the car being worked on was on a raised ramp, the fire spread to the buildings roof.
