the boat seems quick enough to race some larger boats without too much trouble

FORTUNE of WAR (#64) had a good night last Friday (RANSA twilights). 10 knots of breeze, 5 crew and we followed a Farr 40 (Panther) around the top mark and were overtaken by a Lyons 50 and one of the Sydney 38's on the return, but won with a margin on handicap of 3 minutes 8 seconds. Can't wait to see my handicap for this week! Racing in CYCA Twilight on Wednesday but forecast not good. In the light air the FT really flies!

Still trying to tame her in the big afternoon sea-breezes which are common here at this time of year. Rig has been tuned which has improved the situation greatly, and backstay shortned again.

Early days, but we felt she showed us her potential. We were not in 'race trim'... the outhaul and backstay need attention, jib halyard slipping and the rig was loose (delivery run up the coast - that day). We were a bit ugly on the beats, but off the breeze she seemed to have the legs to hang with the Mumm and 11:MOD....

We're smiling!

what's the length of the thing ? Should I get a 6' bag or 7' ? Our boat is getting commissioned and I found some places online where I can order the bag, but they come in different lengths (I think there is only one surf shop in San Francisco and not really on my usual route, and I got a bad cold so I am not spending as much time as I would like at the yard)

Interesting... twings and a spin pole (on deck). Did you rig for a Sym kite option? Do you really need the twing with the Asym?

Ah, now I was expecting at least one of those two questions. First of all the spin pole laying on the foredeck is for No Extras - Twilights... for poling out the jib. We usually hide it for serious racing. Yes it's an ugly old thing off our previous boat. We'll organise a sexy black number when we've finished spending money on more important stuff. Could be there for a while then...

As for the twings (or as we call them... tweakers), yes we do find them useful, given the kite is an AP and has a wide range of wind angles. We understand there are a couple of schools of thought on this, but we find that when we sail deep (and deep is usually the fastest way to the leeward mark in anything under planning pressure) easing the sheet opens the leach and the kite loses power, so tweak on. Neil Pryde kindly puts telltales on the luff (not in the right spot, but still) so they understand that the assy is like a big jib... as you come off the wind and ease a jib sheet, the car has to go forward to keep the top of the sail working (as indicated by telltales). The assy doesn't have cars, of course, so pulling on the tweaker has a similar effect.

Proviso... this is a sports yacht, not a skiff or a sportsboat where the power to weight (quick to plane and desire to stay upright) tends to overcome subtleties of kite trimming.

Make sense?

Oh, and anyone reading this is Sydney who sails Super 30s..... this is all bullshit and is a waste of time and money and just isn't worth trying as it will get you into more trouble than it's worth....

Nope.... don't usually race on Wednesdays. Did one Edwards race many weeks ago and I believe there was a Syd36CR out there. Didn't see them until some time after we'd finished and then only from a distance.

I am hoping that the FTs will be similarly handicapped. As we have a handicap start, maybe there will only be 4 FTs on the line at the time. This would make it our first head to head! As there is no weight limit, we will have plenty of Cascade on board. Long range forecast for WSW at 15kt - unusual - so local knowledge won't help.

Gybes... the FTs went off together and the elapsed prety much reflects sailing capability rather than the boats. First race for Flying Brandy (#79), first kite run for many on FoW (#64) and we broke a halyard (#66 - and I buggered up replacing it)... but... Ophir (#56) was closer to how we all should have gone. They sailed well (nice work guys!) and were the only crew all wearing the same shits and caps and we know how important that is to boat speed! The Syd 32 and Hick were Div 2 which had a slightley different (shorter) course.

Nice to see 4 Tigers back at RANSA though! No. 5 in the water this week, No, 6 just arrived in the country, No. 7 just ordered...

On the RANSA.. the mid race 90 degree windshift did favor Ophir who had 99% of a leg with the kite while the others had to work for most/all of it. So the deltas were magnified compared to what would have normally happenned... though we just put that down to good luck follows good sailing

It would have been nice if the IRC fleet had of started 5 min in front instead they broke there start and got sent to the back of the fleet.
Looking forward to the night race. Not much wind but slowly building.

I will clear up a few things

Had our best day on the Tiger in the long passage race.
Second boat all day to Wild Side(Ingles 57) 17m in front of us at the bottom mark then only beating us by 20min for the Race. The new Quantum A7 kite up the coast was our making leg for the Race(The wind had droped to less then 5kn still making 3.5-4.5kn). It would have been nice if the IRC fleet had of started 5 min in front instead they broke there start and got sent to the back of the fleet(The fleet has a goon mix of boats we would have liked to have seen how many we would have court).
Looking forward to the night race. Not much wind but slowly building.

Night race was a soilders coures with very little kite legs and windward in it. Harry on AUS 46 has had a good race as well last night. He has now set the rig up the same as ours and is show a lot more speed all round. We are still waiting for results to come up on the website.

Well done Strobe, just few metres behind a 55ft Inglis in racing trim, we have banged her a couple of times on the river but she there she has her centreboad 1/2 up! That was a truly great race worthy and of a nomination to the to the 'Tiger Hall of Fame' . Best of luck for the rest of the regatta.

Second your damn officers never post the boat type in the results, and I get lost in between exotic names... third you rarely post a pointer and refer to races in cool australian slang that requires me digging for half an hour with google to get to the actual website...

On the good side my australian is getting better and I now understand most of what you write at first pass (except gybeset).

I am taking a group of guys tomorrow morning before our race for a sail. Hope to see a few more Tigers coming West.
2 Windward returns in the arvo and Thur morning then a med passage on friday to finsh. Been a great learning curve for us on the Tiger as well as Harry (AUS 46). Would love to see more Tigers here next year.

Has someone checked if the Melges Asia Pacific is an actual M32? I seem to recall 'The Business' was the only M32 here in Oz? I thought I remember seeing Asia Pacific as a M24. Which would explain the difference in handicaps. Could be wrong.

SABRE sailed into Sydney Harbor on friday evening just as the RANSA race was beginning. Great to have yet another Tiger in Sydney, and at our club. Another on the water on its way to Sydney, and another on order!

Audi regatta on this weekend with 4 Tigers n the line. I could not make it due work commitments. Looking jealously out the window now at 9-13 knot winds. About perfect!

Certainly does. 10/10 for balls to paint one up like that! And 15/10 for putting up the sails for the first time on Friday and taking the new baby out in 20+ to compete in the Audi. And let me tell you they got better and better over the weekend... until a Chinese D2 turnbuckle said enough's, enough.

So 4 Tigers in the Audi with the oldest just 3 months old. Lots to learn and a lot more perf to extract...

Those with a keen eye will notice the highly modified rudder! Final rig checks on Friday morning and pleasant ride up to Sydney. Fourteen plus knots with the delivery jib only.

The kite was launched for the first time on the way to the start line for the Audi Regatta on the Saturday.

OK... some news from Sydney. We are having our second NSW FT Class meeting next Monday eve. The International FT Assoc. has named us ‘Fleet 3’. Keg on the way!? We’re expecting 10 owners to turn up which includes 3 newbies.

We will discuss making ‘Fleet 3’ the representative of all Oz east coast FTs for the time being.

One new boat (#82) arrives 23rd of April (to sail out of RANSA) and the other two are just ordered. One of the two just ordered, will be making it’s way to Pittwater to join Tigress (#75), the other will be joining Balmain Tiger at Balmain Sailing Club.

Tigress was launched from the home of FT commissioning (as it seems it has become), Shell Point Marine, 3 weeks ago, sailed up to it's new home in Pittwater in a 25 knot southerly - and won it's first Twilight apparently. Owner very happy.

Shere Khan (#77) should get wet this Friday and will hopefully join Balmain Tiger, Sabre and Ophir in the Sportsboat/yacht Div of the Audi Winter Series this Sunday.

So that makes 10 for the Sydney/Pittwater area so far. Not bad considering the first Tiger was launched in November 2007, just 5 months ago.

You bet. Given that all but one of Sydney Tigers has been commisioned at Shell Point Marine, you know that Bruce Gault at the yard now has a 'Standard FT Package' so they hit the water pretty much sorted. We share and enjoy!

Incidently, it is not as big a 'package' as you might suspect. More a recommended options list.

The "net" boat is shipped the same world wide. It is ready to sail.

I think the Australians have it figured out for themselves and would prefer to see this thread kept reserved for constructive commentary on the FT's.

Just to clear up the price thing... the $A74K was the landed cost before commissioning. So that was our container, in Sydney and ready to be sent to yard, duty and GST paid in Nov 2007.

Today with a higher Tiger price and higher $A/$US (for the moment at least), that would be closer to $A78K. Add to that commissioning, motor, antifoul…. Maybe a couple ‘recommended options’ and you can go racing for $A90K, but I’d budget $95K and add a heavy air jib and some more new string…

And incidentally, after some 10 Sydney Tigers, the purchase/delivery/commissioning process is seamless and surprisingly painless.
