To clarify a few points made in the front page article (quoted below)

1) Yes, the new Sjambok is a rocket!

2) Yes, we did over-shoot the Key West Sea Buoy by a bit. Was it by 1/2 an hour? NO! Had we sailed for half an hour after passing the buoy we would have been in the Dry Tortugas! It was more like 2 minutes.

While I prefer to think of it as the sailing equivalent of a hi-speed four-wheel drift around the turn, in reality it was the product of an equipment failure and a momentary lapse of vigilance. Had we been in close proximity to a navigational hazard, there would have been a second set of eyes on situation, and our evening would have been just a little less exciting.

This incident could very well have cost us the time required to take first place, however there were other occasions that cost us some time as well. Some were human error and others were less preventable. In no way do I mean to make excuses or to detract, in any way, from Decision's excellent performance. As we all know, he who make the fewest mistakes win.

Congratulations Decision, and thank you Ft. Lauderdale Yacht Club and Storm Trysail Club for another excellent race.

It seems the new R/P 45 Sjambok is a bit of a rocket (see the Sleigh Ride story below - additionally we hear that Sjambok over shot the bottom mark by about 1/2hr....a navigation error that probably cost them the race). Here's some nice footage of them hauling ass in the Fort Lauderdale to Key West feeder race. As Borat would say. "The boat is Great Success!"

I think the half hour was meant to be a bit of exageration, but I corrected your point. People that have seen the new boat are saying it is really something. Good job!

The new Sjambok is a rocket, no question. When we went by on the Lightspeed (which took an annoyingly long time BTW), the boat was up on a sustained plane in front of all the TP 52s. Just awesome, and a beautiful boat as well.

Why? The pressure now is on owners of formerly fast big boats that can't get it done anymore. I've sailed on a bunch of the east coast IMS maxis that have been modified to sail IRC and they just don't have the outright speed potential. IRC is a great rule if it promoting boats that get up and go in class 1.

Every now and then I get some free time, maybe an hour or 2, and I think about going sailing. Then its back to work.

It used to have to deal purely with production cruiser-racers, it is now being asked to rate custom designed, high tech, out and out race boats - there is no way that 95% of yacht owners who race can compete with this.

The pressure goes throughout the size range - a sigma 38 Vs Ker's latest 37? no contest. New Sjambok Vs IMX 45? no contest.

Love the new boats, race them myself - is just tough on the yacht owners who aren't really able to win any prizes any more!

I don't think any rating rule will ever favor a boat like an IMX 45 in a windy, reachy distance race. I think you'll IRC 0 & super 0 classes with the custom boats, and IRC 1&2 for production types. I'd hate to go back to a rule that slows down all out racing boats. Good time for IRM to return?

IRM still exists and was always intended to take the more extreme racing boats out of IRC. Unfortunately they refused to go!

IRC still works - and it is far from true to state that production boatss do not'

For example the Rolex Middle Sea Race was won by a Z86 but 2nd and third were a J109 and a J105.

In the Rolex Commodore's Cup the winning French team were in production boats.


IRC might be struggling - and will do more with canting keels, powered winches, and Code 0 type sails - but it will rate them all, despite the differences. It is not restrictive but inclusive

It is the best we have got at the moment - and no handicap rule will ever be completely fair.

IRM or a Grand Prix rule would be better for the racers - but it seems few will buy in.

RC, looks like you boys had a hell of a ride! Dave Flynn said you guys would be pretty fast and damn if you weren't. That's a great looking boat, wish we could have seen you sail it for more than a minute We only managed to catch Yeoman and Rima before losing a halyard and the sprit, but damn if it wasn't a good time!
