I have a bet with a mate re what's gunna happen down south. Can anyone update me as to the goss on what's happening in the 45ft plus fleet in Melbourne? Sounds like it is most of the owners are either getting out or wanting to get out. Have any of the boats such as XLR8, The Doll or Flirt sold? What are these guys going to do next and are any new boats arriving?

Its really quite simple, having heard that I was moving to Melbourne, the guys all got together and said "lets sell our boats, that way we won't have to take Tuck for a sail".

I have been sailing regularly on Flirt. The boat has been sold and will be coming to Sydney for the Gold Coast race - the plan is that it will still be doing the East Coast programme. Flirt will be replaced, but to dispell some pretty amusing rumours - as of right now nothing is set in stone.

I can add to the rumour mill by mentioning that Bright Star - the TP52 from New York - has been sold to a Sydney owner and is on its way shortly. We heard this from the vendor.

Flirt was sold to a WA owner who will be racing it over east coast, he currently has a S38 doing the same...

OK, so we have solved the Flirt issue. What are they doing next?

So what's happening to XLR8?

Is Aero/QR coming back soon?

Is the Doll really for sale?

Is Georgia (Farr 53) coming or not?

Is there another Rogers 46 coming (apparently there is)?

Are any of the above linked with a TP52 which is supposedly on the way?

The Paradox of Thrift gave the full story on Flirt at this stage. Its sold, it will be replaced, but they are not yet sure what with. I believe they are actively shopping and looking for the "right" boat. By the sounds of yet they have not yet settled on a direction.

The only TP52 I've heard of at this stage is definately going to Sydney.

Was sold to become PAX NZL, then bought back by the original NZL Georgia owner about 2 ys ago?

highly unlikely Aero ever coming back.

Possibility that another Rogers 46 may go to Royals. S-38 owner (that narrows it down a bit !)

more rumours from this side of the country is that former ninety seven (farr 47) owner is looking at the doll to bring over west, and another west aussie to buy a 53 footer for an east coast campaign (pretty sure it wasn't georgia tho, and currently in court over contractual issues so probably on hold for now)...

Another season just about done and many are for sale, it's just that no one down here seems to know how to sell 'em. Tough when they all hit the market together and there are only so many $$$ to go round on the local pond...
CD could do worse than to move into DCLR8 and do the mods that Geoff Boettcher has done to get HSMB going so much quicker. With a new rig and some Q gear, he would have to save an absolute shitload on a new R/P build. Then GT can do his mini-maxiboat campaign. :o
L/Doll is having a bit of a tidy up right now so who knows whats going on with that one. Syd 47CR Gomez is up in the SYC yard ; is there movement at the station now there's a wedding to pay for?? Jazz Player now back in the piss after a tidy up so will be interesting to see her perform out of RMYS. 97 back on the Bay recently and just took line honours in the Easter Port Fairy race against sfa. Not blue anymore, pity about that.
Yet another Syd 38 on its way south for ex Bull 9000 guys and their website says the highly succesful Bullet is off to Willy. Is that 6 or 7 38's at SYC now?. One Mumm 30 in to SYC ex Syd, (ex Kato), one Mumm 30 out to Pivot City. On the AWB front, another new shrink wrapped Benny 36.7 in the SYC yard this week; yaaaawwwn!

Stay tuned for further developments on these and other exciting projects.

Anyone else heard anything of note??

No idea about that - not my game.
Hypothetical but it seems a reasonable proposition though, to at least look at DCLR8 if you were considering the big spend to do a new build of a similar sized boat by the same designer, particularly when refinements to a sister yacht have shown that it can be significantly improved. CDs past history shows all 2/h boats, not new, so he's not fazed by that.
Will be interesting to see what transpires.

Big refurb and further mods to the current boat planned first, then Hobart 07, then ???
You can be sure Wharro won't stand still for long while the "A" fleet gets even faster.

Grant has gone on record as saying a "new boat is on Don's drawing board".

I suppose it is one thing to have it on the board and another to put it on the water ..eh!?

CD to get an R/P IRC 45. Google "Sjambok" launched Dec 2006 first race at the recent Key West I think, or check out Hakes Marine in Wellington.
The S38 starting with "Chu...." is being "retired" for an R/P 40 NOT a 42. I heard being built at Hart Marine.

While we're discussing fast 40'ers, does anyone know what happened to Bob Steel's old N/M 46 "Quest" ?

I know she went to Tassie, and after JB died she went to QLD, did one Southport race (06) and disappeared? That was one motherf*cking fast boat...

After speaking to insiders is appears:
1. Chutpah to be replaced by RP40 built at Harts.
2. Dolly to have surgery but not for sale.
3. Cougar boys in Spain as we speak re TP52. Hope it holds together if they buy one from the med.
4. RP45 for Flirt boys not so certain now. Onwer has "little pee pee" and wants bigger boat, but not necessarily TP52 bigger. They will have new boat for this year's Hobart Race though.
5. DK46 headed for Geelong. Not necessarily the same one there.

Maybe Giddy could at least answer two of the above.

If it were mine, I'd be adding a bigger rig, two dagger boards and pulling some lead out of the keel (without increasing the depth). The fact that these boats do so well with the keel locked on centre means that it is heavier than it needs to be if canting.

Is Aero/QR coming back soon?

Assume you are talking about dk46 Quantum Racing, If yes, Mr Ray has shipped her to SE Asia and will be campaigned and pitched for sale in the Asian Circuit. Ray&Co just finished President's Cup in Philippines last month. Next up is Koh Samui Regatta end of May.

Ray has done this before with the "yellow bucket" (ex-ABN Amro, ex-Luona Nova SYD46) now called Ulumulu and owned by a Malaysian and - oddly enough - back in oz for re-fit so a madman (luv u Fin) can try and sail it around the world.

Don't expect QR to return to Oz anytime soon... Mr Ray kinda busy w C50 right now me-thinks.

Tuffy, Aero/QR is the Cookson 50 that Mr Ray has chartered (permanently?) from the Geelong owner.

Oh ya... he had a Farr52 named the same (now called Hi-Fi in HKG). Forgot he had two Holly Bollys.

Thanks.

That boat has just been purchased by a west aussie. Expect to see it down your way or in Sydney some time soon

I know the boat in the pic is Flirt which has just been purchased by another west aussie

The guy that has just purchased Hi Fi, owns the Inglis 47 Wild One (previously Worros Wild Thing) in Western Australia. He has done a bit of racing on Vanguard (sp) in sydney over the summer

It depends on what day you talk to him as to what he sails on in Sydney.
Ive heard him say he has been sailing on Loki and one of his crew told me he had been sailing on Vanguard.
Was he kicked off one and managed to get a ride on the other???

He may be able to get the speed of an Inglis 47 out of the new boat.
They have only managed to get the 47 to perform like a 40 since they've had it.

What do you reckon? What do we know already?

- New Flirt is being built in Melbourne;
- It will be similar size as the old boat;
- Its not a RP 45 any more;
- Needs to be a good IRC boat because that is the main racing we do;
- The old boat had great track record and performance;
- The owner just wants something newer and a bit quicker;
- Mysterious Aussie-new-build 49 footer appears on John Corby's web site (as pointed out above);

Mmmmmm....

Quarter Tonner is right. Looks like Shogun is off to the city of churches (strong rumour at this stage)

Eccy getting botox? fuck if you call a full suit of of new sails botox, then we are guilty.three of these sails haven't even met the boat yet.The boat is having a full over haul including internal paint to get ready for next season....oh yeah, everything is for sale !

The new flirt will be one horny looking Schlarper with TP arse section....Hey thrift, reckon we should talk the builder into providing Boogie Board bags as crew back packs? :P

The reality is the Melbourne market has always been tiny in comparison to Sydney for so many reasons. The bigger boat owners have suffered from eratic results and therefore reduced re-sale value. To have $700-900k tied up in a boat that doesn't win would make the average boat owner nervous. The more you lose the less the boat is worth. The Melbourne owners who are competing are not Billionaires and therefore have to watch their sailing investment carefully. I also strongly believe the the migration from IMS to IRC, the many rule changes etc etc has hurt the sport. One minute you need to have a canter, the next you don't. It's the same old, same old, rule changes and rule changes , not a lot there to encourage the avergage big boat owner.

It's OK terra. Ther is no doomsday predicted that I know of. The sun will come up tomorrow!!

As for the eratic results, tell me which boat, with the notable exception of anything that Ray Roberts sails, that doesn't have eratic results, be they Melbourne for NSW based. Notbale eratic NSW boats include Yendys, Loki, Wild Joe and Vanguard. Eratic results are just part of the IRC rule I'd suggest. There is no longer any boat that is a true rating bandit.

As for the Melbourne owners, well at least a few of them are having a go, some with better success than others. It's easy to sit back and be critical.

Latest "goss" is that a TP52 is definitely headed to Melbourne. Will then tune up and head north for the winter.

That will make the fleet for summer to be:
- TP52 (rumour is that it is "Rush")
- New Flirt
- Updated XLR8
- New Shogun / Rogers 46
- Updated Dolly
- New Rp 40

Not a bad IRC fleet at all. Hard to pick an early IRC favorite out of that lot.

Wharro's SWT sitting in the MYC yard sans keel and rig last weekend - about to go to Mals shed for refurb # ?, maybe it should be renamed Silk Purse now.
Corby advises on these pages that Steve Campbell is building the next TP style Corby 49 Flirt.
The Syd 36 PC (older model, pre assys) due in Cat City today - pity the owner will be OS and miss the arrival.
RP 40 must be starting to bite as big drop on Syd 38 asking $$. Probably the hardest offshore worked 38 around though.
