Thanks to Hall Marine Group, we are completely pimped out today in a 44-foot Sea Ray. It's like a P.Diddy video without all the girls, but we do have Mer, Katie, and a cute photog from the Charleston Mercury aboard. It should make posting a LOT easier, if the wind ever fills in.

At the moment, it's less than five knots from the Southeast, but we all expect it to fill in more or less from the South. According to Category 5, who's pretty damned good at this, it should be a decent day of racing today, with the nasties rolling in around 4 PM or later. Lightning show tonight, and maybe...maybe a bit less than 25 sustained tomorrow. It could be 20, but it could be 40, apparently, so today might be the end of the regatta.

That was a sweet-ass start! The M32 Vamoose won the pin and was flying, while roXanne was stuck on the wrong side of the RC boat, but 2 minutes later the right boats like roXanne look like gold. TP52 Decision had a mediocre start, with the Farr 36 and with Sister Golden Hair both giving her bad air, but she's gone now. I feel bad for the 120's in this breeze, it looks like not so much fun.

That was funny, Rush had a nice start, and Chicken came in on port, late, ducked everyone, and now is flying in the bigger pressure out to the right. 105's next.

Check it out - Convexity just slammed Savasana out at the boat. Not too much yelling - but Convex probably won the start with Masquerade just to leeward, Rum at Six next. Savasana was almost a minute late after having to do a circle to get back to the line. Brother Cowboy on Revelation out of Savannah was about 5 minutes late, but smiling and having a good time anyway. Pics are coming in a few minutes, and we're going to hang out here at the leeward gates to see if anything good happens.

The adjusted wind pressures are now on target. Three reporting stations just to your west now confirm 16mph from 170.

Winds will be on the increase with a persistent right shift until 170-180 on your course for the balance of the afternoon.

The front that is approaching is about to pick up gulf moisture and by 1500HRS this afternoon I expect watches and warnings for T-storms and possible tornados across the lower Mississippi valley, western Florida, Western SC and GA.

A nice convective burst is now happening over lower central Mississippi.

But here's the funny part - Outrageous lost the foot of their kite on the hoist and rolled over it, coming to a screeching halt. There's a big catamaran out here with about 50 spectators aboard, and they all cheered and whistled as the Chameleon rolled by them - Outrageous didn't get going until they lost three boats!

Then Geronimo did the same thing, and they're still going backwards.

Sorry for the delay - the wind is doing some weird shit...It's only blowing 5-7 now, and it's back down to 120 degrees as the clouds start to roll in. They're getting puffy and big, and I think everyone is waiting to see the huge southerly shift that's somewhere in there.

My boys on Team Gill just had a ridiculously good start - they're getting dialled in now for sure. Madrigali had them at the RC boat, a touch late, and they tacked away to the right immediately. The current is unbelieveable out on the left, and they squirted so fast and so hard. We'll see if it paid off when they get to the bottom in a few.

J/24 Short Bus did the exact same thing, and they're gone. Behind them were Classic, My Heine, and Kia Ora

The rest of the classes saw everything, and now they're going to be crowding the hell out of the boat.

Wind is holding at 120 degrees, 7 knots, and we're all waiting for the big righty - but in this case, the current said "go right" as well.

The little B-25 (PHRF G) boat Phantom got T-boned between races by Melges 24 "Room 444 Improvement." I love it when names are accurate!

We're not staying out for the finish, since we've got to go and see what happened on the ocean and they're on their way in now. I did just get a message from Farr 36 Meridian - a pair of fours are barely keeping them in the hunt as the wind died out on the race course.

I probably should have started off with this post, but anyway, here's the press release I wrote last night.

Friday’s dawn brought an unexpected gift for the eight offshore classes that sailed on two courses outside of Charleston Harbor today. Despite dire predictions of calms, a ten-knot Northeasterly provided plenty of breeze for all offshore classes to start on time, with close tactical racing in most of the fleets. The breeze didn’t make it into the harbor, leaving the Melges 24, J/80, J/24 and PHRF G class with some time to kill. Most of them didn’t mind too much, since there were bottlenose dolphins to entertain the inshore fleet.



Meanwhile, the scratch boat in the A fleet showed what a truly modern race boat is capable of. The TP52 Decision beat the fleet by over 15 minutes, getting her only bullet of the day, while two Melges 32’s match-raced their way around the course, finishing within seconds of one another. According to Dan Dickison, crewing on Melges 32 Vamoose, the racing between the two boats was more than just close. “I think the total elapsed time difference for all three races between us and roXanne was probably 70 seconds.” That was enough for the North Carolina-based roXanne to take the lead of this tough class, despite her and Vamoose being the shortest boat in the class.



It’s no secret that super light sport boats are fast in these kind of light conditions, so it was a bit of a surprise to see the not-quite-sport boat Beneteau 10R NKE prevail over some of the more powered-up boats in the class, like the SR33 As If, which sits in second. It shouldn’t be such a surprise given NKE helmsman Don Finkle has had so much success in Beneteau classes, and Don won at least one race by only one second on corrected time. When the breeze gets up, these speedsters should be a lot of fun to watch.



The U.S. representative team for the Pan-Am games aboard J/24 Jesus Lizard rafted up with some of their hometown friends while the fleet milled around in light, extremely shifty conditions. The expected southerly didn’t show up until after 1 p.m., and the Race Committee made the most of it, banging off three races in quick succession. The course location stretches over shoals and channels, and local knowledge proved the key, with Josh Putnam picking the right current lines and eddies to power Jesus Lizard to a strong lead in the J/24 class, despite an I-flag OCS that made the third race a tough one.



The locals did their thing in the Melges class as well, despite some serious out-of-town talent competing. Ned Goss, tactician aboard Reggie Fairchild’s Wireless, pointed their boat to a 4,2,1 scoreline, “We just played the current as much as we possibly could, and it worked for us.” Three out of the top four Melges 24’s are from Charleston, and their advantage is obvious, at least in the light winds that dominated today. Olympic medalist and former Soling World Champion Jeff Madrigali, crewing with Team Gill, said, “We’re happy with our improvement today [10,6,3] as we’re learning to sail with each other for the first time as we build up to the Santa Cruz Melges Worlds next month. The current in the harbor is tough, but we’re having a great time and we’re looking forward to more breeze tomorrow.”



With more wind, possible rain, and even a thunderstorm or two, he should get his wish. In the meantime, the racers will try to sleep off the plentiful Dark n’ Stormies and pounds of Frogmore Stew (shrimp, corn and potatoes) and get ready for some more tough racing and competition tomorrow. THANK GOD that they're not pulling the plug. If tomorrow shows 20-25 it would be epic, and it would be a shame to miss it. The real problem is that there will be a real light show tonight, and the Melgi and other really light, rafted up boats need to not be on the water unless they've got some real lines and big-ass fenders.

I have to tell you, Brad and L_Z and Tim Wilkes and I were hanging out pretty late last night (the hotel lost the keys to the press room, and no one could get their crap or their room keys so we were stuck in the bar until someone showed up) and they are top-drawer mofos. He was telling stories from the Around Alone that had me crying laughing. He's pretty new to race management, and as a racer he can't imagine sending people home early. That being said, the forecast is not fire and brimstone - it's a tough, stormy night, with good breeze tomorrow that might be too much, or it might not. I suppose some people will go home, and the irony is that the folks who usually go home in the face of big breeze are the ones that need to get out in it the most.

Melges Race 6 results are just in, and it looks like a great battle if they can get out there tomorrow. Looks like when the drop is factored in (which L_Z is working on now), Team Gill and MMallow are going to be tied up, with local Reggie Fairchild one point behind.

The pyrotechnics may or may not be all that exciting tonight. Right now it looks like there will be some but not a ridiculous amount. The storm doesn't really get it's act together until it is in Morehead City, NC tomorrow.

Well, let's see... the preliminary results with the "throw-outs" are up.

On the weather front, I (we) have a bunch to thank Mark Michaelsen (DryArmour / Castegory5) for all the time, help and support he has given me/us this weekend (and every other time we/I asked him for weather when working at an event!). We've been doing the phone/net/reports since 8AM and everything that has been said so far, is materializing.

It is now 2:46AM and the light show has started. Blowing like stink! Brad Van Liew and the Race Organization have done a great job in amending the SI based on the pending weather. Their vision is not only to provide the best racing but also to ensure that everyone and their boats are safe. They have gone as far as making all of the arrangements with Charleston Boat Works to have boats hauled out this evening if they (owner) chose to do so.

All competitors were notified of the impending weather and given their options (SI amendment notification) immediately after finishing race 6 and once their were on shore, they were notifies again during dinner. It is going to be a long night and we'll probably be up for most of it making sure the boats are OK.

Morning will tell and a call will be made then.

Gotta tell you... it's my first time at Charleston Race Week and if you haven't done this event before, you ought to put it in your agenda for next year. One of the best venues, organization, racing and everything you can ask for. BTW, the OA booked the entire resort for the event and we are still wondering how they accepted to host us in the first place. This is an awesome place and the management has gone way and above their means to cater to us and make us feel at home. I'm sure we'll be back with a larger group than this year!

Time to go to bed as I'm sure I'll be getting a wake up call in about an hour to go check on the boats.

Likely a good call. There is tornadic activity to the SW (moving NE) and a line of severe thunderstorms yet to cross the race area. (Should do so in the next few hours)

The low pressure system creating this situation will develop in to a peppy storm beginning now through tomorrow morning with winds sharply on the increase over the next six hours in the coastal waters.

Tough call for the RC but a good call in the interest of safety...

No worries - I always call 'em like I see 'em, and I was in a great position to see MT overlapped with you for at least 5 BL's before the mark. MT's bow was at your stern, which meant that his entire bowsprit was overlapped with you. I'd have protested and had you tossed. Overlap is often a sujective thing when you're aboard, but from our angle we could see it with the utmost clarity. I'll fire up Mer's computer later, I think I've got pics of the rounding so you can see what I'm talking about.

oh, I know remember, you have a good shot of it too. We were not overlapped at 2 boat lengths. we did our takedown early and decelerated. they kept the chute up and kept the speed.

Is not the 'onus' on overtaking boats to prove an overlap? or is onus not used anymore ... ; )

I'll get to it when I'm done studying for the stupid exam I have in the morning, she's got 3000 pics from this weekend, not particularly well-indexed. I forgot how to study, but apparently not how to procrastinate.

As for the incident, regardless of what the pics I find, we were, as you probably saw, less than 60 feet from the gates. I saw overlap well before the 2 BL circle. Not the bow, but the sprit for sure. SailRacer, yes the onus is on the boat trying to claim overlap - but it was pretty obvious to everyone on the boat, most of whom were racers. I didn't write about it until it was apparent there was no red flag, and I probably would have avoided writing about it if there was, but like i said, to us it was obvious. If you saw it differently, I understand - but it's amazing how much more clear rules issues are when you're sitting on a power boat just outside the gates.

I really didn't get to see much of it because I was on the bow of the Hendo preparing to douse the chute. All I know is it was an intense rounding for us and LF stalled just before they got to the mark.

I must admit that I was busy trimming the chute, snack-tating , grinding in main for rounding, and final jib trim.

the fact that the 2 boatlength starts at 2 x our 40' boat plus any length of the prod (8')? so that might equal 96 feet and at speed reaching some would say (Dave Perry) the circle was larger.

Photos show the hendo outside of us. Either way it was interesting as I used to race on the Melges 30 Lighthorse and am aware of how those type of boats can squirt (for lack of a better term).
Please pm me if you have good picks. It was a FULL weekend of action for me 'multi-tasking'on a J120.

ummm...pass!! Heading to Bald Head Island tomorrow. I am doing RC a bunch for the Wed Night series though. Clean is right about things look so clear from chase / crew / RC boat.

How's the house coming or that taboo here? You have so many rules...
