Its a sneak peek at the new US Sailing tests for match racing starts. The two boats are tied together with a twine line at the stern. The umpire then chants 5-4-3-2-1 GO! and hacks the line with a machete.
Version 1 had one boat head to wind and one boat dead down in order to keep the boats in line. Dismal failure.
Version 2 had the boats 90 degrees on port and starboard. Another failure. Not only was the port boat favored every time, in an unfortunate mishap one of the umpires was "Accidently" strangled by the rope.
Version 3, as can be seen, was a success. The committe finds that the system works best when there is no wind.
