Oh and boatpix haha, glad to see you're still at it. :(

Yeard ago at BIRW we drove "sailman" to the airport so he could bend up the rotors on the copter---we were so tired of them blowing the air out of the spinnaker in the light air

alas--the copter wasn't there--but I seem to remember something about climbing into an unlocked Piper Cherokee and trying to take off....but my memory fades

I was checking the lockers in Osprey this afternoon and came upon some out of date flares. Being a helo mech I can tell you it's quite a spectacle when the flare buckets on a military bird are mounted incorrectly and some hit the blades. (yes it happens believe it or not!!!)
Food for thought...

Get your choppers off our race courses. You have this stupid ability to setup your shots from directly upwind with noticable effect on boatspeed. My sail number is 461. Nobody on my boat will ever buy a picture from you so you can stop taking pictures of us.

Allow me to refresh it for you...the only reason you did not take off was that the Plane was either not connected to a working battery or you missed the one switch that would have started it, you hit all the others! Bring up that story at your next meeting!

Ahhhhh... Boatpix and Splicing Nuts - the two easiest whipping boys on SA! We need a thread of them together.

BoatPriks have been warned to not approach our venue too. USCG and FAA have let them know that flying below minimums (i.e., below the tips of masts) and approaching the ship channel nearer than the airspace restrictions will land that student pilot in deep doo-doo. So far it's worked.

How many of you have seen spinnakers collapse and back, or even boats slammed over onto the other tack when these ASSHATS hover at water level 100m away?

Shall we also bring up their marketing and sales process???

There's been mention of their website being close to impossible to search.

Well, seems as if they are bending over backwards to make it hard for their potential customers.

Talk about a fussy website -- have a look at the error message at the bottom of this screenshot of their search page.

Nah, we don't control the airspace. But, when you race near the ship channel for the 4th largest port in the US the USCG, FAA, Port Authority, and Homeland Security DO control the airspace and don't take lightly aircraft loitering around natural gas tankers. All they need is a hint that there's an unidentified helicopter hovering over the bay close to the shipping. Hee, hee, hee...

Couple of quick items
  • Have bought three different large photos and happy with results
  • They are more expensive than I would like
  • Near impossible to get to specific regatta pix from their site unless you have a link sent by them to you or know every friggin detail of the race including the PRO's wife's name. Fix the problem.
  • Once you get to the right regatta etc. the user interface is easy to use.
  • They have supported this site with advertising so you guys can dump on them ---
  • They need some business practice counseling, not more grief
  • Stealing pix with Photoshop is not just a juvenile prank -- it's theft and the name is the same whether it is an internet picture or someone stepping onto your boat and taking your $300 handheld, battery operated, dildoe. Ya, it is f%#ked up
Finally, it's not the prop wash that screws up my race, it's all the primping the crew does when they know they are going to be in pictures.

Altering a picture that was spammed to me in photoshop is completely legal and justified. Boatpix sucks and you are a stupid newbie. Especially since it is on my wall and not being used for anything else. Are you a Boatpix troll?

<< Altering a picture that was spammed to me in photoshop is completely legal >>

First, a question; then an opinion.

Is it the unsolicited nature of the delivery of the photo that makes altering it acceptable? (No, I have not yet read the copyright notice associated with Boatpix work.)

And my (almost entirely worthless) opinion: If we discover that altering and keeping such a photo is, in fact, illegal, then it is about as illegal as taking a one hundred dollar bill that someone left on the trunk of a car in an unpatrolled parking lot.

Thanks for helping me understand the rather convoluted world of copyright applied to creative work.

cheers,
Dana

$300 on a dildo? NH, you must be a dildo connoisseur. And stepping on someone's boat is Trespassing and theft. In some U.S. States, including mine, unsolicited merchandise does not have to be paid for OR returned.

I've got a suspicion that NH is the same as the jerk from BoatPriks who started the thread. The SplicingNut does the same thing. The alternate IDs either argue with themselves to try and make a point, or mutually support each other. It's funny to read things like this when one person tries assuming two personalities in the same thread.

I have tried several times over the years to get pix from this asshat-shitbox of a company.

Last summer on Mackinac Island (or maybe the summer before?) the owner had set up a table and display at the Chippewa.
I asked him nicely Why ius it that his site is so difficult to order from? Instead of answering the question, like saying "we're working on it" or something like that, he friggin' got all bent out of shape, like he had something stuck up his ass, and snapped back at me. Great customer relation skills!

I can only imagine the real money they could make...

Or, maybe it's not about the shots at all, meaning maybe when they're out over the water they swing by nice offshore speedboats, drop a line, and haul in some streetside recreational for sale ashore...Just a thought.

Next week there will probably be a collection agency billing you for 4-14x17, 6-8x10 and 24-4x6 of the shot.
They do get even, I hear

Every time I go to a regatta and they mail me pictures as a sample they start sending bills and collection notices even after I returned the shit that I usually didn't ask for in the first place.

What if I say that I have a potato gun that will shoot 200' from my boat and if those fuckers come within the 200' than I will point and shoot. Is that okay since they are breaking FAA rules by flying that close to me?

Not a good idea unless you like showering with Bubba. Potato guns are classified as firearms in most areas. Might as well start shooting handguns at them. Law enforcement isn't going to care if it was a potato or a bullet at that point.

Wow you guys are a tough crowd! Am I the only guy who had a good experience with BOATPIX?

It couldn't be a whole lot simpler. goto their web site www.boatpix.com/gallery select the race or regatta you were at, and order the stinking photos.

If you don't want them to send you everything, and be responsible for what you don't want to buy, select the photo numbers you want, e-mail them a Sales@boatpix.com, give them a credit card number and the photos are in the mail... I bought the digital images and they e-mailed them within the hour, and followed up with a CD in the mail.

don't know how many of us sailor types are into flying, but the costs are heavy. For starters, nobody makes a J24 or a Tartan 10(or even a Ben 36.7) priced helicopter... it is a business, it costs money to do what they do, and they don't fly around for fun.

Cut them some slack, and I'm guessing that after all the ass chewing they took this year, that they'll use a higher power zoom and give us more room on the course... SD

May I suggest that you read some of the past threads. And be thankful that you never got threatened to be sent to a collection dept when you never ordered any pics. Yeah, cut them some slack. I don't think so. Oh, then have them drop down on you in a light air race when you got your 4 knt shit box finally moving and have them park you up for 15 min while you try to get moving again. Yeah, cut them some slack. They will learn in what? 3 years that we have been complaining, yeah, cut them some slack.

No, you are right, they don't fly around for fun. There is a student in there paying the bills everytime those choppers go up. This is a Helicopter School. It would appear that anything extra they're making from their photos is likely pure profit, and a tidy one at that. There pricing, in my opinion, is outragous.

Allow me to refresh it for you...the only reason you did not take off was that the Plane was either not connected to a working battery or you missed the one switch that would have started it, you hit all the others! Bring up that story at your next meeting!

You are confusing me with someone else, I have never onwned a plane and the person you drove to a plane was therefore someone else. I m not even a pilot

Thanks for the kind words, I think www.BOATPIX.com/gallery works exceptionally well. We never send out unsolicited pictures or thumbnails. Thank you for the kind words and expressing your relative satisfaction which is refreshing.

So there are no students or instructors earning flight time from the Helicopter Academy on board. Now let's get past the semantics here, let us just call them 'entry-level helicopter pilots', that's got a ring to it. Surely much more skilled than a student with an instructor. Oh, how about two 'entry-level helicopter pilots' splitting the flying and photography work. And let me guess, boogerpix is charging then around $100 an hour (combined) plus gas, and you pay them $20 an hour (to split) to take photos. hmm, let me get my calculator out.... Ding, ding! We have a winner!

Plus SA should be paid for your blatant usage of commercial advertising on it's forum. Others pay for it, why not you? Care to comment on that? Can I have one of your pics of my choice for free? (I think not).

That happened to me, too. I sold my boat the year before and was not entered in the regatta I was being dunned for. Not bloody likely they took any pictures of me, but I was told I owed them over a thousand dollars and was brusquely warned that my delinquent account would be referred to a collection agency if I did not pay up. In fairness, the matter was straightened out eventually, but do you think they acknowledged their mistake? Hell no. The whole ugly mess was a matter of their poor record keeping and shoddy business practices. No apology, nothing.

What's more, all the pictures I have seen from them are washed out like the guy uses old film or doesn't know how to use filters or print or much of anything except how to get a sailboat in the frame.

What a bum wad.

Thanks GABA and DDOG, I am laid up now, but that posting was done in January '08, sort of surprised this is still going... I have not had the experience of having pics sent to me unsolicited/un-requested, and Yes I do think their prices are high.

SD

So seadog14 and boatpix are one and the same?

Mex

DDog is correct. Seadog is no shill for anybody.

Just a real sailor who's laid up at home (medical stuff) with way too much time on his hands right now.

Nah, but he has a thing or two to learn about dealing with this jerk. And damn me for responding, cause that is what Boatdicks wants. Let this die please.

Strange business model when you want negative comments about your product to resurface.

I'll pay for the pics from the dude in the little photo boat or woody as they show the real action.

Boatpix has its place, if you like watching a football game from a blimp without a telephoto lens.

I'm biting my tongue, but if I had to get boat pictures from a race, I'd go to Woody before these guys.
Sure, the quality is good, but dozens of horror stories are hard to beat...
